    The influence of substrate temperature on growth of para-sexiphenyl thin films on Ir{111} supported graphene studied by LEEM

    The growth of para-sexiphenyl (6P) thin films as a function of substrate temperature on Ir{111} supported graphene flakes has been studied in real-time with Low Energy Electron Microscopy (LEEM). Micro Low Energy Electron Diffraction (\mu LEED) has been used to determine the structure of the different 6P features formed on the surface. We observe the nucleation and growth of a wetting layer consisting of lying molecules in the initial stages of growth. Graphene defects -- wrinkles -- are found to be preferential sites for the nucleation of the wetting layer and of the 6P needles that grow on top of the wetting layer in the later stages of deposition. The molecular structure of the wetting layer and needles is found to be similar. As a result, only a limited number of growth directions are observed for the needles. In contrast, on the bare Ir{111} surface 6P molecules assume an upright orientation. The formation of ramified islands is observed on the bare Ir{111} surface at 320 K and 352 K, whereas at 405 K the formation of a continuous layer of upright standing molecules growing in a step flow like manner is observed.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, Revised Version as accepted for publication in Surface Scienc

    Evolution of microflares associated with bright points in coronal holes and in quiet regions

    We aim to find similarities and differences between microflares at coronal bright points found in quiet regions and coronal holes, and to study their relationship with large scale flares. Coronal bright points in quiet regions and in coronal holes were observed with Hinode/EIS using the same sequence. Microflares associated with bright points are identified from the X-ray lightcurve. The temporal variation of physical properties was traced in the course of microflares. The lightcurves of microflares indicated an impulsive peak at hot emission followed by an enhancement at cool emission, which is compatible with the cooling model of flare loops. The density was found to increase at the rise of the impulsive peak, supporting chromospheric evaporation models. A notable difference is found in the surroundings of microflares; diffuse coronal jets are produced above microflares in coronal holes while coronal dimmings are formed in quiet regions. The microflares associated with bright points share common characteristics to active region flares.     Linearized esculentin-2EM shows pH dependent antibacterial activity with an alkaline optimum

    Here the hypothesis that linearized esculentin 2EM (E2EM-lin) from Glandirana emeljanovi possesses pH dependent activity is investigated. The peptide showed weak activity against Gram-negative bacteria (MLCs ≥ 75.0 μM) but potent efficacy towards Gram-positive bacteria (MLCs ≤ 6.25 μM). E2EM-lin adopted an α-helical structure in the presence of bacterial membranes that increased as pH was increased from 6 to 8 (↑ 15.5 to 26.9 %), while similar increases in pH enhanced the ability of the peptide to penetrate (↑ 2.3 to 5.1 mN m-1) and lyse (↑ 15.1 to 32.5%) these membranes. Theoretical analysis predicted that this membranolytic mechanism involved a tilted segment, that increased along the α-helical long axis of E2EM-lin (1-23) in the N → C direction, with - increasing overall from circa - 0.8 to - 0.3. In combination, these data showed that E2EM-lin killed bacteria via novel mechanisms that were enhanced by alkaline conditions and involved the formation of tilted and membranolytic, α-helical structure. The preference of E2EM-lin for Gram-positive bacteria over Gram-negative organisms was primarily driven by the superior ability of phosphatidylglycerol to induce α-helical structure in the peptide as compared to phosphatidylethanolamine. These data were used to generate a novel pore-forming model for the membranolytic activity of E2EM-lin, which would appear to be the first, major reported instance of pH dependent AMPs with alkaline optima using tilted structure to drive a pore-forming process. It is proposed that E2EM-lin has the potential for development to serve purposes ranging from therapeutic usage, such as chronic wound disinfection, to food preservation by killing food spoilage organisms

    Candidate Sex Pheromones of the New World Screwworm Cochliomyia Hominivorax -- Summary & Abstract

    Females in established colonies of screwworm flies eventually lose the ability to make sex stimulant pheromone. This fact could result in the poor mating success observed during large sterile insect technique projects, such as the current Screwworm eradication program in Jamaica. Scientists at the Center for Medical, Agricultural and Veterinary Entomology in Gainesville, Florida were sought out by the International Atomic Energy Agency to test for and identify the sex pheromone in colonized Screwworm flies. Six chemical structures from previously published works were selected and all five new compounds were synthesized. Tests were conducted on colony screwworm flies from USDA, ARS, Midwest Livestock Insects Research Unit in Lincoln NE and from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico. Two of the five compounds resulted in strong sexual stimulation when tested with males of three new strains, but the 1992 strain and the sterile males responded poorly. This work completes the identification and synthesis of the biologically active compounds in screwworms originally started by ARS many years ago. This synthetic sex pheromone could be used as a standard to test the responses of colonized males, the result of an effort to transfer technology from the laboratory to solve practical problems in the field

    Computer-Aided Analysis of LANDSAT-1 MSS Data: A Comparison of Three Approaches, Including a Modified Clustering Approach

    Three approaches to computer-aided analysis of LANDSAT-1 MSS data were evaluated utilizing data from a test site in rugged, mountainous terrain. The approaches compared include non-supervised (clustering), modified supervised, and modified clustering. Test field results indicated classification accuracies of 78.58, 70.0%, and 84.7%, respectively for the three analysis techniques. The modified clustering approach proved to be the optimal computer-aided analysis technique of those tested because of minimal computer time required, highest classification accuracy, and most effective analyst/data interaction.     Candidate sex pheromones of the New World screwworm \u3ci\u3eCochliomyia hominivorax\u3c/i\u3e

    Five novel homologous acetate derivatives of long-chain secondary alcohols and a related ketone were tested for their efficacy as contact mating stimulants for Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Full copulatory behaviour at a high percentage was found in tests with racemic 6-acetoxy-19-methylnonacosane at 2.5 – 20 μg using fertile males from three strains. Males of two strains responded nearly as well to 7-acetoxy-15-methylnonacosane, but an older strain first colonized in 1992 did not respond to this compound. Few or no copulatory responses were obtained to the other secondary alcohol acetates and a related ketone. These two acetate derivatives are the first sex pheromones identified in a calliphorid fly. The threshold of response was also tested, but could not be pinpointed
