Formative Assessment with eRubrics: an Approach to the State of the Art

    Get PDF
Today there is no longer any doubt about the benefits of technology for university teaching, especially in relation to the socialisation of knowledge, communication and partnerships, among other important goals. Clearly, technology increasingly represents equipment and services that are crucial for teaching. However, despite the current general impact of technology, there are certain teaching areas, such as the evaluation of learning, where teachers cannot be replaced by technology (e.g. evaluating texts). The role of teachers in creating quality-learning environments, together with the students’ commitment in every stage of their learning process, is essential in order to make the most of technology. The present case study aims to promote the use of technology in general assessment and sets the following specific objective: to share successful practice and research on the use of eRubrics (i.e. electronic rubrics) in the field of assessment of university learning. The starting point is the need to strengthen certain skills among teachers and students, while building communities of practice on their use.RED

The effects of verbal information on children's fear beliefs about social situations

Two experiments explored the role of verbal information in changing children’s fearrelated beliefs about social situations. In Experiment 1, 118 6- to 8- and 12- to 13-year-olds heard positive, negative, or no information about individuals’ experiences of three social situations. Fear beliefs regarding each situation were assessed before and after this manipulation. Verbal information had no significant influence on children’s fear beliefs. In Experiment 2, the same paradigm was used with 80 12- to 13-year-olds, but the information took the form of multiple attitude statements about the situations expressed by groups of peers, older children, or adults. An affective priming task of implicit attitudes was used to complement the explicit questions about fear beliefs. Negative information influenced both explicit and implicit fear beliefs. The source of information and the child’s own social anxiety did not moderate these effects. Implications for our understanding of the socialisation of childhood fears are discussed

The Dilaton Theorem and Closed String Backgrounds

The zero-momentum ghost-dilaton is a non-primary BRST physical state present in every bosonic closed string background. It is given by the action of the BRST operator on another state \x, but remains nontrivial in the semirelative BRST cohomology. When local coordinates arise from metrics we show that dilaton and \x insertions compute Riemannian curvature and geodesic curvature respectively. A proper definition of a CFT deformation induced by the dilaton requires surface integrals of the dilaton and line integrals of \x. Surprisingly, the ghost number anomaly makes this a trivial deformation. While dilatons cannot deform conformal theories, they actually deform conformal string backgrounds, showing in a simple context that a string background is not necessarily the same as a CFT. We generalize the earlier proof of quantum background independence of string theory to show that a dilaton shift amounts to a shift of the string coupling in the field-dependent part of the quantum string action. Thus the ``dilaton theorem'', familiar for on-shell string amplitudes, holds off-shell as a consequence of an exact symmetry of the string action.Comment: 51 pages, plain tex with phyzzx, two uuencoded figure

Dimensional analysis of MINMOD leads to definition of the disposition index of glucose regulation and improved simulation algorithm

BACKGROUND: Frequently Sampled Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test (FSIVGTT) together with its mathematical model, the minimal model (MINMOD), have become important clinical tools to evaluate the metabolic control of glucose in humans. Dimensional analysis of the model is up to now not available. METHODS: A formal dimensional analysis of MINMOD was carried out and the degree of freedom of MINMOD was examined. Through re-expressing all state variable and parameters in terms of their reference scales, MINMOD was transformed into a dimensionless format. Previously defined physiological indices including insulin sensitivity, glucose effectiveness, and first and second phase insulin responses were re-examined in this new formulation. Further, the parameter estimation from FSIVGTT was implemented using both the dimensional and the dimensionless formulations of MINMOD, and the performances were compared utilizing Monte Carlo simulation as well as real human FSIVGTT data. RESULTS: The degree of freedom (DOF) of MINMOD was found to be 7. The model was maximally simplified in the dimensionless formulation that normalizes the variation in glucose and insulin during FSIVGTT. In the new formulation, the disposition index (Dl), a composite parameter known to be important in diabetes pathology, was naturally defined as one of the dimensionless parameters in the system. The numerical simulation using the dimensionless formulation led to a 1.5–5 fold gain in speed, and significantly improved accuracy and robustness in parameter estimation compared to the dimensional implementation. CONCLUSION: Dimensional analysis of MINMOD led to simplification of the model, direct identification of the important composite factors in the dynamics of glucose metabolic control, and better simulations algorithms

On the Picture Dependence of Ramond-Ramond Cohomology

Closed string physical states are BRST cohomology classes computed on the space of states annihilated by b0−b_0^-. Since b0−b_0^- does not commute with the operations of picture changing, BRST cohomologies at different pictures need not agree. We show explicitly that Ramond-Ramond (RR) zero-momentum physical states are inequivalent at different pictures, and prove that non-zero momentum physical states are equivalent in all pictures. We find that D-brane states represent BRST classes that are nonpolynomial on the superghost zero modes, while RR gauge fields appear as polynomial BRST classes. We also prove that in xx-cohomology, the cohomology where the zero mode of the spatial coordinates is included, there is a unique ghost-number one BRST class responsible for the Green-Schwarz anomaly, and a unique ghost number minus one BRST class associated with RR charge.Comment: Added one footnote and five reference

Configurational Entropy and Diffusivity of Supercooled Water

We calculate the configurational entropy S_conf for the SPC/E model of water for state points covering a large region of the (T,rho) plane. We find that (i) the (T,rho) dependence of S_conf correlates with the diffusion constant and (ii) that the line of maxima in S_conf tracks the line of density maxima. Our simulation data indicate that the dynamics are strongly influenced by S_conf even above the mode-coupling temperature T_MCT(rho).Comment: Significant update of reference

Solution generating in scalar-tensor theories with a massless scalar field and stiff perfect fluid as a source

We present a method for generating solutions in some scalar-tensor theories with a minimally coupled massless scalar field or irrotational stiff perfect fluid as a source. The method is based on the group of symmetries of the dilaton-matter sector in the Einstein frame. In the case of Barker's theory the dilaton-matter sector possesses SU(2) group of symmetries. In the case of Brans-Dicke and the theory with "conformal coupling", the dilaton- matter sector has SL(2,R)SL(2,R) as a group of symmetries. We describe an explicit algorithm for generating exact scalar-tensor solutions from solutions of Einstein-minimally-coupled-scalar-field equations by employing the nonlinear action of the symmetry group of the dilaton-matter sector. In the general case, when the Einstein frame dilaton-matter sector may not possess nontrivial symmetries we also present a solution generating technique which allows us to construct exact scalar-tensor solutions starting with the solutions of Einstein-minimally-coupled-scalar-field equations. As an illustration of the general techniques, examples of explicit exact solutions are constructed. In particular, we construct inhomogeneous cosmological scalar-tensor solutions whose curvature invariants are everywhere regular in space-time. A generalization of the method for scalar-tensor-Maxwell gravity is outlined.Comment: 10 pages,Revtex; v2 extended version, new parts added and some parts rewritten, results presented more concisely, some simple examples of homogeneous solutions replaced with new regular inhomogeneous solutions, typos corrected, references and acknowledgements added, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.

Groebner bases of ideals invariant under endomorphisms

We introduce the notion of Groebner S-basis of an ideal of the free associative algebra K over a field K invariant under the action of a semigroup S of endomorphisms of the algebra. We calculate the Groebner S-bases of the ideal corresponding to the universal enveloping algebra of the free nilpotent of class 2 Lie algebra and of the T-ideal generated by the polynomial identity [x,y,z]=0, with respect to suitable semigroups S. In the latter case, if |X|>2, the ordinary Groebner basis is infinite and our Groebner S-basis is finite. We obtain also explicit minimal Groebner bases of these ideals.Comment: 15 page
