Probing the evolution of heavy-ion collisions using direct photon interferometry
We investigate the measurement of Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) photon
correlations as an experimental tool to discriminate different sources of
photon enhancement, which are proposed to simultaneously reproduce the direct
photon yield and the azimuthal anisotropy measured in nuclear collisions at
RHIC and the LHC. To showcase this, we consider two different scenarios in
which we enhance the yields from standard hydrodynamical simulations. In the
first, additional photons are produced from the early pre-equilibrium stage
computed from the \textit{bottom-up} thermalization scenario. In the second,
the thermal rates are enhanced close to the pseudo-critical temperature
using a phenomenological ansatz. We compute the
correlators for relative momenta and for different
transverse pair momenta, , and find that the longitudinal correlation
is the most sensitive to different photon sources. Our results also demonstrate
that including anisotropic pre-equilibrium rates enhances non-Gaussianities in
the correlators, which can be quantified using the kurtosis of the correlators.
Finally, we study the feasibility of measuring a direct photon HBT signal in
the upcoming high-luminosity LHC runs. Considering only statistical
uncertainties, we find that with the projected heavy ion events
a measurement of the HBT correlations for is
statistically significant
Association of polymorphisms in CYP19A1 and CYP3A4 genes with lower urinary tract symptoms, prostate volume, uroflow and PSA in a population-based sample
PURPOSE: The known importance of testosterone for the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) prompted us to test the hypothesis whether polymorphisms of two genes (CYP19A1 and CYP3A4) involved in testosterone metabolism are associated with clinical BPH-parameters. METHODS: A random sample of the population-based Herne lower urinary tract symptoms cohort was analysed. All these men underwent a detailed urological work-up. Two polymorphisms in the CYP19A1 gene [rs700518 in exon 4 (A57G); rs10046 at the 3'UTR(C268T)] and one in the 3'UTR of CYP3A4 [rs2740574 (A392G)] were determined by TaqMan assay from genomic DNA of peripheral blood. These polymorphisms were correlated to clinical and laboratory BPH-parameters. RESULTS: A total of 392 men (65.4 +/- 7.0 years; 52-79 years) were analysed. Mean International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS; 7.5), Q (max) (15.4 ml/s), prostate volume (31 ml) and prostate specific antigen (PSA) (1.8 ng/ml) indicated a typical elderly population. Both polymorphisms in the CYP19A1 gene were not correlated to age, IPSS, Q (max), prostate volume and post-void residual volume. Serum PSA was higher in men carrying the heterozygous rs10046 genotype (2.0 +/- 0.1 ng/ml) than in those with the CC-genotype (1.7 +/- 0.2 ng/ml, P = 0.012). Men carrying one a mutated allele of the CYP3A4 gene had smaller prostates (27.0 +/- 2.0 vs. 32 +/- 0.8 ml, P = 0.02) and lower PSA levels (1.6 +/- 0.3 vs. 1.9 +/- 0.1 ng/ml). CONCLUSIONS: The inconsistent associations observed herein and for other gene polymorphisms warrant further studies. In general, the data regarding the association of gene polymorphism to BPH-parameters suggest that this disease is caused by multiple rather than a single genetic variant. A rigorous patient selection based on anatomo-pathological and hormonal profile may possible reduce the number of confounders for future studies thus enabling a more detailed assessment of the association between genetic factors and BPH-parameter
TFA and EPA Productivities of Nannochloropsis salina Influenced by Temperature and Nitrate Stimuli in Turbidostatic Controlled Experiments
The influence of different nitrate concentrations in combination with three cultivation temperatures on the total fatty acids (TFA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) content of Nannochloropsis salina was investigated. This was done by virtue of turbidostatic controlled cultures. This control mode enables the cultivation of microalgae under defined conditions and, therefore, the influence of single parameters on the fatty acid synthesis of Nannochloropsis salina can be investigated. Generally, growth rates decreased under low nitrate concentrations. This effect was reinforced when cells were exposed to lower temperatures (from 26 °C down to 17 °C). Considering the cellular TFA concentration, nitrate provoked an increase of TFA under nitrate limitation up to 70% of the biological dry mass (BDM). In contrast to this finding, the EPA content decreased under low nitrate concentrations. Nevertheless, both TFA and EPA contents increased under a low culture temperature (17 °C) compared to moderate temperatures of 21 °C and 26 °C. In terms of biotechnological production, the growth rate has to be taken into account. Therefore, for both TFA and EPA production, a temperature of 17 °C and a nitrate concentration of 1800 ÎŒmol Lâ1 afforded the highest productivities. Temperatures of 21 °C and 26 °C in combination with 1800 ÎŒmol Lâ1 nitrate showed slightly lower TFA and EPA productivities
Study of Spin and Decay-Plane Correlations of W Bosons in the e+e- -> W+W- Process at LEP
Data collected at LEP at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt(s) = 189 - 209 GeV are
used to study correlations of the spin of W bosons using e+e- -> W+W- -> lnqq~
events. Spin correlations are favoured by data, and found to agree with the
Standard Model predictions. In addition, correlations between the W-boson decay
planes are studied in e+e- -> W+W- -> lnqq~ and e+e- -> W+W- -> qq~qq~ events.
Decay-plane correlations, consistent with zero and with the Standard Model
predictions, are measured
Ultrarelativistic sources in nonlinear electrodynamics
The fields of rapidly moving sources are studied within nonlinear
electrodynamics by boosting the fields of sources at rest. As a consequence of
the ultrarelativistic limit the delta-like electromagnetic shock waves are
found. The character of the field within the shock depends on the theory of
nonlinear electrodynamics considered. In particular, we obtain the field of an
ultrarelativistic charge in the Born-Infeld theory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of the Cross Section for Open-Beauty Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at LEP
The cross section for open-beauty production in photon-photon collisions is
measured using the whole high-energy and high-luminosity data sample collected
by the L3 detector at LEP. This corresponds to 627/pb of integrated luminosity
for electron-positron centre-of-mass energies from 189GeV to 209GeV. Events
containing b quarks are identified through their semi-leptonic decay into
electrons or muons. The e+e- -> e+e-b b~X cross section is measured within our
fiducial volume and then extrapolated to the full phase space. These results
are found to be in significant excess with respect to Monte Carlo predictions
and next-to-leading order QCD calculations
Search for Heavy Isosinglet Neutrino in e+e- Annihilation at LEP
We report on a search for the first generation heavy neutrino that is an
isosinglet under the standard SU(2)_L gauge group. The data collected with the
L3 detector at center-of-mass energies between 130 GeV and 208 GeV are used. The
decay channel N_e --> eW is investigated and no evidence is found for a heavy
neutrino, N_e, in a mass range between 80 GeV and 205 GeV. Upper limits on the
mixing parameter between the heavy and light neutrino are derived
Formation of the in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP
The two-photon width of the meson has been
measured with the L3 detector at LEP. The is studied in the decay
modes , KK, KK,
KK, , , and
using an integrated luminosity of 140 pb at GeV and
of 52 pb at GeV. The result is
(BR) keV. The dependence of the cross section is studied for
GeV. It is found to be better described by a Vector Meson
Dominance model form factor with a J-pole than with a -pole. In addition,
a signal of events is observed at the mass. Upper limits
for the two-photon widths of the , , and are also
given
Direct Observation of Longitudinally Polarised W Bosons
The three different helicity states of W bosons, produced in the reaction
e+e- -> W+W- -> l nu q q~ are studied using leptonic and hadronic W decays at
sqrt{s}=183GeV and 189GeV. The W polarisation is also measured as a function of
the scattering angle between the W- and the direction of the e- beam. The
analysis demonstrates that W bosons are produced with all three helicities, the
longitudinal and the two transverse states. Combining the results from the two
center-of-mass energies and with leptonic and hadronic W decays, the fraction
of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured to be 0.261 +/- 0.051(stat.)
+/- 0.016(syst.) in agreement with the expectation from the Standard Model
