Bargmann invariants and off-diagonal geometric phases for multi-level quantum systems -- a unitary group approach
We investigate the geometric phases and the Bargmann invariants associated
with a multi-level quantum systems. In particular, we show that a full set of
`gauge-invariant' objects for an -level system consists of geometric
phases and algebraically independent 4-vertex Bargmann
invariants. In the process of establishing this result we develop a canonical
form for U(n) matrices which is useful in its own right. We show that the
recently discovered `off-diagonal' geometric phases [N. Manini and F.
Pistolesi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 8, 3067 (2000)] can be completely analysed in terms
of the basic building blocks developed in this work. This result liberates the
off-diagonal phases from the assumption of adiabaticity used in arriving at
them.Comment: 13 pages, latex, no figure

Gauge fixing and the Hamiltonian for cylindrical spacetimes
We introduce a complete gauge fixing for cylindrical spacetimes in vacuo
that, in principle, do not contain the axis of symmetry. By cylindrically
symmetric we understand spacetimes that possess two commuting spacelike Killing
vectors, one of them rotational and the other one translational. The result of
our gauge fixing is a constraint-free model whose phase space has four
field-like degrees of freedom and that depends on three constant parameters.
Two of these constants determine the global angular momentum and the linear
momentum in the axis direction, while the third parameter is related with the
behavior of the metric around the axis. We derive the explicit expression of
the metric in terms of the physical degrees of freedom, calculate the reduced
equations of motion and obtain the Hamiltonian that generates the reduced
dynamics. We also find upper and lower bounds for this reduced Hamiltonian that
provides the energy per unit length contained in the system. In addition, we
show that the reduced formalism constructed is well defined and consistent at
least when the linear momentum in the axis direction vanishes. Furthermore, in
that case we prove that there exists an infinite number of solutions in which
all physical fields are constant both in the surroundings of the axis and at
sufficiently large distances from it. If the global angular momentum is
different from zero, the isometry group of these solutions is generally not
orthogonally transitive. Such solutions generalize the metric of a spinning
cosmic string in the region where no closed timelike curves are present.Comment: 12 pages, accepted for publication in Physical Review
The fables of pity: Rousseau, Mandeville and the animal-fable
Copyright @ 2012 Edinburgh University PressPrompted by Derrida’s work on the animal-fable in eighteenth-century debates about political power, this article examines the role played by the fiction of the animal in thinking of pity as either a natural virtue (in Rousseau’s Second Discourse) or as a natural passion (in Mandeville’s The Fable of the Bees). The war of fables between Rousseau and Mandeville – and their hostile reception by Samuel Johnson and Adam Smith – reinforce that the animal-fable illustrates not so much the proper of man as the possibilities and limitations of a moral philosophy that is unable to address the political realities of the state
Scheme dependence of NLO corrections to exclusive processes
We apply the so-called conformal subtraction scheme to predict perturbatively
exclusive processes beyond leading order. Taking into account evolution
effects, we study the scheme dependence for the photon-to-pion transition form
factor and the electromagnetic pion form factor at next-to-leading order for
different pion distribution amplitudes. Relying on the conformally covariant
operator product expansion and using the known higher order results for
polarized deep inelastic scattering, we are able to predict perturbative
corrections to the hard-scattering amplitude of the photon-to-pion transition
form factor beyond next-to-leading order in the conformal scheme restricted to
the conformal limit of the theory.Comment: RevTeX, 25 pages, 2 figures, 5 tables, minor changes, to be published

Quantization of Midisuperspace Models
We give a comprehensive review of the quantization of midisuperspace models.
Though the main focus of the paper is on quantum aspects, we also provide an
introduction to several classical points related to the definition of these
models. We cover some important issues, in particular, the use of the principle
of symmetric criticality as a very useful tool to obtain the required
Hamiltonian formulations. Two main types of reductions are discussed: those
involving metrics with two Killing vector fields and spherically symmetric
models. We also review the more general models obtained by coupling matter
fields to these systems. Throughout the paper we give separate discussions for
standard quantizations using geometrodynamical variables and those relying on
loop quantum gravity inspired methods.Comment: To appear in Living Review in Relativit
Fludarabine-Based Reduced Intensity Conditioning for Stem Cell Transplantation of Fanconi Anemia Patients from Fully Matched Related and Unrelated Donors
AbstractReduced intensity conditioning has been suggested as a desirable therapeutic modality for the treatment of patients with malignant and nonmalignant indications, but it seems particularly attractive for patients with Fanconi anemia due to their increased sensitivity to chemoradiotherapy. Between November 1996 and September 2003, 7 patients (1 male and 6 female; age range, 3-31 years; median age, 9.5) were conditioned with a fludarabine-based protocol for stem cell transplantation without radiation. In vivo T-cell depletion was accomplished with anti-thymocytic globulin or Campath-1H (alemtuzumab). Graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis consisted of low-dose cyclosporine alone. Eight transplantations were carried out for 7 patients using bone marrow, peripheral blood, and/or cord blood as sources of stem cells. All patients received transplants from HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DR matched donors, 5 from family members and 2 from matched unrelated donors. One patient did not engraft her first matched unrelated donor and underwent a second transplantation from another matched unrelated donor, after which she engrafted well. All 7 patients are alive and well, fully reconstituted with donor cells, and with 100% performance status. In conclusion, fludarabine-based preparative protocols are well tolerated, facilitate rapid engraftment with minimal toxicity, and should be considered an essential component of choice for patients with Fanconi anemia
A Study of Time-Dependent CP-Violating Asymmetries and Flavor Oscillations in Neutral B Decays at the Upsilon(4S)
We present a measurement of time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in
neutral B meson decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The data
sample consists of 29.7 recorded at the
resonance and 3.9 off-resonance. One of the neutral B mesons,
which are produced in pairs at the , is fully reconstructed in
the CP decay modes , , , () and , or in flavor-eigenstate
modes involving and (). The flavor of the other neutral B meson is tagged at the time of
its decay, mainly with the charge of identified leptons and kaons. The proper
time elapsed between the decays is determined by measuring the distance between
the decay vertices. A maximum-likelihood fit to this flavor eigenstate sample
finds . The value of the asymmetry amplitude is determined from
a simultaneous maximum-likelihood fit to the time-difference distribution of
the flavor-eigenstate sample and about 642 tagged decays in the
CP-eigenstate modes. We find , demonstrating that CP violation exists in the neutral B meson
system. (abridged)Comment: 58 pages, 35 figures, submitted to Physical Review
