Dust Storms in Space?
Primarily from the Pioneer 8 and 9 results, it is concluded that the flux of picogram sized dust particles near the earth's orbit has been constant to within the observational limits over three years of observation. In particular, since dust streams are not observed, they cannot explain microphone detected events. However, the possibility of rare events due to dust blown directly off a cometary nucleus (such as that reported for Comet Bennett) cannot be completely ruled out
Fresh-Water Mollusca of the Finger Lakes Region of New York
Author Institution: Biology Department, New York State University College, Oneonta, New York 13820, and Department of Entomology and Limnology, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14850A study of the molluscan fauna in central New York State has provided information on the distribution of fresh-water mollusks in that region, and on the species composition of snails and pearly fresh-water mussels in the major Finger Lakes and thirteen additional lakes and reservoirs in the Oswego River drainage basin. The data are based on 120 collections taken by hand picking, sieving, and the utilization of diving equipment.
Small isolated upland lakes (Dryden, Cazenovia, Como, Panther, Kasoag Lakes), meromictic lakes (Fayetteville Green, Round, and Clark Reservation Lakes), and reservoirs with abnormal silt content and frequently fluctuating water levels (Jamesville and DeRuyter Reservoirs) support only a few species of mollusks. In the meromictic lakes in particular, empty shells collected are believed to represent former molluscan populations whose shells are preserved by the calcium-rich waters. Morphometrically oligotrophic lakes on the major waterways (the seven largest Finger Lakes) possess moderate numbers of molluscan species. In contrast, the shallow lakes of the limestone belt that are in direct communication with the larger rivers have the greatest species diversity.

Exactness of the Bogoliubov approximation in random external potentials
We investigate the validity of the Bogoliubov c-number approximation in the
case of interacting Bose-gas in a \textit{homogeneous random} media. To take
into account the possible occurence of type III generalized Bose-Einstein
condensation (i.e. the occurrence of condensation in an infinitesimal band of
low kinetic energy modes without macroscopic occupation of any of them) we
generalize the c-number substitution procedure to this band of modes with low
momentum. We show that, as in the case of the one-mode condensation for
translation-invariant interacting systems, this procedure has no effect on the
exact value of the pressure in the thermodynamic limit, assuming that the
c-numbers are chosen according to a suitable variational principle. We then
discuss the relation between these c-numbers and the (total) density of the
condensate
Scientific, institutional and personal rivalries among Soviet geographers in the late Stalin era
Scientific, institutional and personal rivalries between three key centres of geographical research and scholarship (the Academy of Sciences Institute of Geography and the Faculties of Geography at Moscow and Leningrad State Universities) are surveyed for the period from 1945 to the early 1950s. It is argued that the debates and rivalries between members of the three institutions appear to have been motivated by a variety of scientific, ideological, institutional and personal factors, but that genuine scientific disagreements were at least as important as political and ideological factors in influencing the course of the debates and in determining their final outcome
A controlled follow-up study of adolescents exposed to a school shooting - Psychological consequences after four months
Background: In November 2007, a student shot eight people and himself at Jokela High School, Finland. This study aims to evaluate the long-term effects of exposure to a school shooting among adolescents. Method: Associations between psychological outcomes and background factors were analysed and compared with "comparison students" four months after the incident. A questionnaire including Impact of Event Scale (IES) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-36) was used. Results: Half of the females and a third of the males suffered from posttraumatic distress. High level of posttraumatic distress (IES >= 35), predicting PTSD, was observed in 27% of the females and 7% of the males. The odds ratio was 6.4 (95% confidence interval 3.5-10.5) for having high levels of posttraumatic distress. Severe or extreme exposure and female gender were found to increase the risk. Forty-two percent of the females and 16% of the males had psychiatric disturbance (GHQ >= 9). Severe or extreme exposure, older age and female gender increased the risk. Perceived support from family and friends was found to be protective. Conclusions: The observed risk and protective factors were similar to earlier studies. Follow-up will be essential in identifying factors predicting persisting trauma-related symptoms in adolescence. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.Peer reviewe
The whole and its parts : why and how to disentangle plant communities and synusiae in vegetation classification
Most plant communities consist of different structural and ecological subsets, ranging from cryptogams to different tree layers. The completeness and approach with which these subsets are sampled have implications for vegetation classification. Non‐vascular plants are often omitted or sometimes treated separately, referring to their assemblages as “synusiae” (e.g. epiphytes on bark, saxicolous species on rocks). The distinction of complete plant communities (phytocoenoses or holocoenoses) from their parts (synusiae or merocoenoses) is crucial to avoid logical problems and inconsistencies of the resulting classification systems. We here describe theoretical differences between the phytocoenosis as a whole and its parts, and outline consequences of this distinction for practise and terminology in vegetation classification. To implement a clearer separation, we call for modifications of the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature and the EuroVegChecklist. We believe that these steps will make vegetation classification systems better applicable and raise the recognition of the importance of non‐vascular plants in the vegetation as well as their interplay with vascular plants
New Cataclysmic Variables and other Exotic Binaries in the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae
We present 22 new (+3 confirmed) cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the non
core-collapsed globular cluster 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc). The total number of CVs in
the cluster is now 43, the largest sample in any globular cluster so far. For
the identifications we used near-ultraviolet (NUV) and optical images from the
Hubble Space Telescope, in combination with X-ray results from the Chandra
X-ray Observatory. This allowed us to build the deepest NUV CV luminosity
function of the cluster to date. We found that the CVs in 47 Tuc are more
concentrated towards the cluster center than the main sequence turnoff stars.
We compared our results to the CV populations of the core-collapsed globular
clusters NGC 6397 and NGC 6752. We found that 47 Tuc has fewer bright CVs per
unit mass than those two other clusters. That suggests that dynamical
interactions in core-collapsed clusters play a major role creating new CVs. In
47 Tuc, the CV population is probably dominated by primordial and old
dynamically formed systems. We estimated that the CVs in 47 Tuc have total
masses of approx. 1.4 M_sun. We also found that the X-ray luminosity function
of the CVs in the three clusters is bimodal. Additionally, we discuss a
possible double degenerate system and an intriguing/unclassified object.
Finally, we present four systems that could be millisecond pulsar companions
given their X-ray and NUV/optical colors. For one of them we present very
strong evidence for being an ablated companion. The other three could be CO- or

Identification Of Faint Chandra X-Ray Sources In The Core-Collapsed Globular Cluster NGC 6397: Evidence For A Bimodal Cataclysmic Variable Population
We have searched for optical identifications for 79 Chandra X-ray sources that lie within the half-mass radius of the nearby, core-collapsed globular cluster NGC 6397, using deep Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys Wide Field Channel imaging in H alpha, R, and B. Photometry of these images allows us to classify candidate counterparts based on color-magnitude diagram location. In addition to recovering nine previously detected cataclysmic variables (CVs), we have identified six additional faint CV candidates, a total of 42 active binaries (ABs), two millisecond pulsars, one candidate active galactic nucleus, and one candidate interacting galaxy pair. Of the 79 sources, 69 have a plausible optical counterpart. The 15 likely and possible CVs in NGC 6397 mostly fall into two groups: a brighter group of six for which the optical emission is dominated by contributions from the secondary and accretion disk and a fainter group of seven for which the white dwarf dominates the optical emission. There are two possible transitional objects that lie between these groups. The faintest CVs likely lie near the minimum of the CV period distribution, where an accumulation is expected. The spatial distribution of the brighter CVs is much more centrally concentrated than those of the fainter CVs and the ABs. This may represent the result of an evolutionary process in which CVs are produced by dynamical interactions, such as exchange reactions, near the cluster center and are scattered to larger orbital radii, over their lifetimes, as they age and become fainter.NASA HST-GO-10257ANSF REU AST-0452975NSERCCIFARAstronom
Long-term observations of the pulsars in 47 Tucanae. I. A study of four elusive binary systems
For the past couple of decades, the Parkes radio telescope has been regularly
observing the millisecond pulsars in 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc). This long-term timing
program was designed to address a wide range of scientific issues related to
these pulsars and the globular cluster where they are located. In this paper,
the first of a series, we address one of these objectives: the characterization
of four previously known binary pulsars for which no precise orbital parameters
were known, namely 47 Tuc P, V, W and X (pulsars 47 Tuc R and Y are discussed
elsewhere). We determined the previously unknown orbital parameters of 47 Tuc V
and X and greatly improved those of 47 Tuc P and W. For pulsars W and X we
obtained, for the first time, full coherent timing solutions across the whole
data span, which allowed a much more detailed characterization of these
systems. 47 Tuc W, a well-known tight eclipsing binary pulsar, exhibits a large
orbital period variability, as expected for a system of its class. 47 Tuc X
turns out to be in a wide, extremely circular, 10.9-day long binary orbit and
its position is ~3.8 arcmin away from the cluster center, more than three times
the distance of any other pulsar in 47 Tuc. These characteristics make 47 Tuc X

Partially ordered models
We provide a formal definition and study the basic properties of partially
ordered chains (POC). These systems were proposed to model textures in image
processing and to represent independence relations between random variables in
statistics (in the later case they are known as Bayesian networks). Our chains
are a generalization of probabilistic cellular automata (PCA) and their theory
has features intermediate between that of discrete-time processes and the
theory of statistical mechanical lattice fields. Its proper definition is based
on the notion of partially ordered specification (POS), in close analogy to the
theory of Gibbs measure. This paper contains two types of results. First, we
present the basic elements of the general theory of POCs: basic geometrical
issues, definition in terms of conditional probability kernels, extremal
decomposition, extremality and triviality, reconstruction starting from
single-site kernels, relations between POM and Gibbs fields. Second, we prove
three uniqueness criteria that correspond to the criteria known as bounded
uniformity, Dobrushin and disagreement percolation in the theory of Gibbs
