Os autores apre-sentam os resultados de uma recolha exploratória na qual se pretende perceber que es-tabelecimentos de ensino superior português possuem e utilizam uma plataforma e-learning e determinar uma amostra de plataformas a serem analisadas numa parte posterior do estudo. Numa primeira parte desta comunicação aborda-se a metodologia de recolha de dados on-line utilizada. De seguida, analisa-se a informação relativa à caracterização da amostra no que respeita à presença das instituições na Internet e analisa-se a informação sobre as características das plataformas, nomeadamente o tipo e formas de utilização, os aspectos técnicos, administrativos, a construção dos cursos, a facilidade de utilização, a sua dinamização, a avaliação dos alunos e o grau de satis-fação por parte dos utilizadores

    The organising principles of the society of Jesus - from the pastorate to governmentality

    Foucault’s concepts of Pastoral power and “governmentality” have led to the development of the London school of “governmentalists” (McKinlay and Pezet 2010). However, extant literature on governmentality drawn from this school of thought has undertaken an analytics of power centred on the deployment of governmental forms of power at the State level, not taking into consideration another entity that emerged after modernity, the modern enterprise, and not going beyond the 19th century, thereby trapping “governmentality” studies inside their own modern discourse. Following Foucault’s established relation between Pastoral power and “governmentality”, this thesis analyses the form of organising deployed by an organisation that emerged in the 16th century, apparently being able to survive into modernity without adopting modern managerial business categories. This organisation is the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. The first part of this thesis will analyse the relevance of the Society of Jesus for organisational studies and will show how modern business categories fail to explain its structural resilience. The second part of the thesis introduces Pastoral power as a possible explanation for the apparent structural resilience of the Society of Jesus. Following this line of reasoning, and after having established an analytics of power as a possible methodological framework, the Society of Jesus’ “organising practices” will be presented, leading to the conclusion that this entity, having emerged at the cornerstone of modernity, deployed practices that represent a significant shift when compared with previous Pastoral forms of organising. The fact that the Society of Jesus clearly intended to deploy practices for the conduction of geographicallydispersed individuals leads to the conclusion that it deployed a “protogovernmental” form of power, and that the rationality underpinning its practices, although not entirely modern, is clearly at the cornerstone of modernity and can therefore be enlightening to an understanding of how modern managerial categories might have emerged

    Precision single mode fibre integral field spectroscopy with the RHEA spectrograph

    The RHEA Spectrograph is a single-mode echelle spectrograph designed to be a replicable and cost effective method of undertaking precision radial velocity measurements. Two versions of RHEA currently exist, one located at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia (450 - 600nm wavelength range), and another located at the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, USA (600 - 800 nm wavelength range). Both instruments have a novel fibre feed consisting of an integral field unit injecting light into a 2D grid of single mode fibres. This grid of fibres is then reformatted into a 1D array at the input of the spectrograph (consisting of the science fibres and a reference fibre capable of receiving a white-light or xenon reference source for simultaneous calibration). The use of single mode fibres frees RHEA from the issue of modal noise and significantly reduces the size of the optics used. In addition to increasing the overall light throughput of the system, the integral field unit allows for cutting edge science goals to be achieved when operating behind the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope and the SCExAO adaptive optics system. These include, but are not limited to: resolved stellar photospheres; resolved protoplanetary disk structures; resolved Mira shocks, dust and winds; and sub-arcsecond companions.     Colour profile analysis of Port Wines by different instrumental and visual methods

    BACKGROUND: Wine colour is an important quality parameter, being the first sensorial attribute evaluated during wine tasting. The perception of wine colour can be different depending on many factors, including the depth of the sample under observation. The main objectives of the present study were to measure the colour of Port wines, using CIE L*a*b* parameters at different depths with different instrumental techniques (spectrophotometry and colorimetry), and to compare the obtained results with the sensory (visual) perception of colour samples. RESULTS: Representative profiles of Lightness (L*), Hue (H*) and Chroma (C*) at different depths were obtained using Port wine samples from different categories and ages. In general, relatively good correlations between the colorimetric and spectrophotometric methods were obtained for the L* and H* parameters. The results of the sensory tests also showed good correlations between the visually-assessed hue scores and the colorimetric measurements of the H* parameter, particularly at the lower depths tested (up to 4.0 mm).     Performance of bacterial nanocellulose packaging film functionalised in situ with zinc oxide: Migration onto chicken skin and antimicrobial activity

Bacterial NanoCellulose (BNC) features a porous fibre network, with high absorption capacity, flexible and with good mechanical properties, suitable as a carrier of active agents. In this work, BNCZnO films were developed and optimized regarding the particle size and ZnO concentration. The NaOH dropwise addition to BNC membranes immersed in Zn(CH3COO)2-PVOH enabled the production of ZnO nanoparticles with an z-average of 144 nm and a low polydispersity index. High ZnO incorporation (27%mZn/mBNCZnO) was obtained, with uniform distribution all over the BNC membranes. These composites were then characterized and evaluated for Zn migration using food simulants (10%, 20%, and 50% ethanol) with results lower than the limit. Migration into chicken skin, as a real food model, was low at 4 °C but exceeded the migration limit at 10 and 22 °C. Zn migration was also found to be temperature and pH dependent. When applied to chicken skin, BNCZnO was effective against E. coli, Salmonella (0.51.0 log reduction), and Campylobacter spp. (2.0 log reduction), indicating its potential for active packaging applications.The authors appreciate the technical support from CINATE team, especially Susana Teixeira for the assistance in atomic absorption spectroscopy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Kelt-17B: A Hot-Jupiter Transiting an A-Star in a misaligned orbit detected with Doppler Tomography

    We present the discovery of a hot Jupiter transiting the V = 9.23 mag main-sequence A-star KELT-17 (BD+14 1881). KELT-17b is a 1.310.29+0.28MJ{1.31}_{-0.29}^{+0.28}\,{M}_{{\rm{J}}}, 1.5250.060+0.065RJ{1.525}_{-0.060}^{+0.065}\,{R}_{{\rm{J}}} hot-Jupiter in a 3.08-day period orbit misaligned at −115fdg9 ± 4fdg1 to the rotation axis of the star. The planet is confirmed via both the detection of the radial velocity orbit, and the Doppler tomographic detection of the shadow of the planet during two transits. The nature of the spin–orbit misaligned transit geometry allows us to place a constraint on the level of differential rotation in the host star; we find that KELT-17 is consistent with both rigid-body rotation and solar differential rotation rates (α<0.30\alpha \lt 0.30 at 2σ2\sigma significance). KELT-17 is only the fourth A-star with a confirmed transiting planet, and with a mass of 1.6350.061+0.066M{1.635}_{-0.061}^{+0.066}\,{M}_{\odot }, an effective temperature of 7454 ± 49 K, and a projected rotational velocity of vsinI=44.21.3+1.5kms1;v\sin {I}_{* }={44.2}_{-1.3}^{+1.5}\,\mathrm{km}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}; it is among the most massive, hottest, and most rapidly rotating of known planet hosts

    WASP-34b: A near-grazing transiting sub-Jupiter-mass exoplanet in a hierarchical triple system

    We report the discovery of WASP-34b, a sub-Jupiter-mass exoplanet transiting its 10.4-magnitude solar-type host star (1SWASP J110135.89-235138.4; TYC 6636-540-1) every 4.3177 days in a slightly eccentric orbit (e = 0.038±0.012). We find a planetary mass of 0.59±0.01 M Jup and radius of 1.22-0.08 +0.11 R Jup. There is a linear trend in the radial velocities of 55±4 m s-1 y-1 indicating the presence of a long-period third body in the system with a mass ≥0.45 MJup at a distance of ≥1.2 AU from the host star. This third-body is either a low-mass star, a white dwarf, or another planet. The transit depth ((RP/R*) 2 = 0.0126) and high impact parameter (b = 0.90) suggest that this could be the first known transiting exoplanet expected to undergo grazing transits, but with a confidence of only ~80
