Macroscopic simulation of the liner honing process

    Get PDF
The form quality, the roughness and the surface appearance produced by honing minimizes the friction of the piston in the liner. The process is however mechanically complex and the selection of the process parameters is currently based on empirical methods. The aim of this paper is thus to develop a macroscopic simulation environment of complete real honing cycles, which will help end-users during the setting-up. This virtual tool is based on a space-time discretization and a macroscopic cutting model taking into account local contacts between the workpiece and the abrasive tool. The space-time discretization allows representing the machine environment with the tool, the workpiece and the kinematics. Simulation results are finally validated by comparison with industrial experiments.ThĂšse CIFRe Renault SAS / MSMP PĂŽleProcess ECO

Simulation of Roughness and Surface Texture Evolution at Macroscopic Scale During Cylinder Honing Process

    Get PDF
The honing process produces surface liners with specific functional properties. Engine performances and life expectancy are directly impacted by the quality of honed surface. The form quality, the roughness and the surface appearance manufactured by honing determine the friction of the piston in the liner. The process is however mechanically complex and the selection of the process parameters is currently based on empirical methods. The aim of this paper is thus to develop a macroscopic simulation environment which will help end-users during this setting-up stage. The development of this virtual tool is based on a space-time discretization and a macroscopic cutting model taking into account local contacts between the workpiece and the abrasive stones. The space-time discretization allows representing the machine environment including the tool, the workpiece and the machine kinematics. The cutting model allows converting kinematics and abrasive contacts in dynamic data and material removal rate by calculation. The cutting model is initially adjusted based on simple experiments. The stock removal equation is then extrapolated to the whole range of stone cutting conditions. This approximation allows simulating the real process and a whole honing cycle. Results are validated by comparison with industrial context experiments. The simulation of the whole honing cycle allows predicting the form quality, one of the roughness criteria and the surface appearance. Moreover, simulation results are represented by means of maps that allow looking at quality criteria for each point of the surface

title : Neurosciences in the service of marketing communication: manipulation and ethics- A critique of neuromarketing Abstract : By using knowledge in neurosciences, the neuromarketing claims to be capable of influencing the purchasing behavior of the persons without they are conscious of it, and thus, improve commercial communication strategies. We defend another hypothesis: the neuromarketing would be essentially a "marketing trick". Through a critical analysis of this instrumentalization of neurosciences, we show how the communication researchers can use their skills in the service of organizations by highlighting the uselessness of certain "fashionable" scientific applications and the importance of an ethical reflection in the interest of organizations.

Flexible right sized honing technology for fast engine finishing

    Get PDF
The paper discusses a flexible honing technology by describing the new prototype machine with its specificity. Three original methods produced by the flexible honing prototype have been studied. A path combines the two contemporary methods of industrial honing: the helical slide honing at 135 ° at the bottom of the cylinder and the conventional honing at 45 ° on the upper part. This method of honing shows the effectiveness of specific motion tracking to remove traces of inversions. Circular trajectories with large radii can be traveled quickly without consuming too much energy. The high cutting speed promotes the removal of material thus saving time. Finally, the multi-circle paths can get original textures thus proving the feasibility of all patterns

Parameter Synthesis for Parametric Interval Markov Chains

    Get PDF
AELOS_HCERES2020, STR_HCERES2020Interval Markov Chains (IMCs) are the base of a classic probabilistic specification theory introduced by Larsen and Jonsson in 1991. They are also a popular abstraction for probabilistic systems. In this paper we study parameter synthesis for a parametric extension of Interval Markov Chains in which the endpoints of intervals may be replaced with parameters. In particular, we propose constructions for the synthesis of all parameter values ensuring several properties such as consistency and consistent reachability in both the existential and universal settings with respect to implementations. We also discuss how our constructions can be modified in order to synthesise all parameter values ensuring other typical properties

Fusion method choice driven by user constraints in a human gesture recognition context

    Get PDF
International audienceRecognition of human gesture leads to a dynamic field that produces many various methods. The main way to improve the recognition process is to perform data fusion based on a qualification of each recognition method. The advance in data fusion gives also several solutions and the choice of a fusion method is a crucial point. The goal of this paper is to present an approach were the choice of the fusion method is driven by the constraints of the final user of data. Such constraints are expressed as bounds on indicators like confidence or accuracy. A practical experimentation illustrating this approach is presented in this paper. From a depth camera sensor, human gesture is interpreted and, fusion method is selected in accordance with the constraints of the final information consumer. This approach is illustrated in a robotic control by human gesture: outputs perform the action to be done by a NAO robot

Anti-angiogenic VEGFAxxxb transcripts are not expressed in the medio-basal hypothalamus of the seasonal sheep

Source at https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0197123.This study investigated Vegfa expression in the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary and medio-basal hypothalamus (MBH) of sheep, across seasons and reproductive states. It has recently been proposed that season impacts alternative splicing of Vegfa mRNA in the PT, which shifts the balance between angiogenic VEGFAxxx and anti-angiogenic VEGFAxxxb isoforms (with xxx the number of amino acids of the mature VEGFA proteins) to modulate seasonal breeding. Here, we used various RT-PCR methodologies and analysis of RNAseq datasets to investigate seasonal variation in expression and splicing of the ovine Vegfa gene. Collectively, we identify 5 different transcripts for Vegfa within the ewe PT/MBH, which correspond to splicing events previously described in mouse and human. All identified transcripts encode angiogenic VEGFAxxx isoforms, with no evidence for alternative splicing within exon 8. These findings led us to investigate in detail how “Vegfaxxxb-like” PCR products could be generated by RT-PCR and misidentified as endogenous transcripts, in sheep and human HEK293 cells. In conclusion, our findings do not support the existence of anti-angiogenic VEGFAxxxb isoforms in the ovine PT/MBH and shed new light on the interpretation of prior studies, which claimed to identify Vegfaxxxb isoforms by RT-PCR

Increased Levels of Circulating IL-16 and Apoptosis Markers Are Related to the Activity of Whipple's Disease

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Whipple's disease (WD) is an infectious disease caused by Tropheryma whipplei, which replicates in macrophages and induces the release of interleukin (IL)-16, a substrate of caspase 3, and macrophage apoptosis. The disease is characterized by intestinal, cardiac or neurological manifestations; its diagnosis is based on invasive analysis requiring tissue biopsies or cerebrospinal fluid puncture. The disease progression is slow and often complicated by relapses despite empirical antibiotic treatment. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We monitored circulating levels of IL-16 and nucleosomes in 36 French patients with WD; among them, some patients were enrolled in a longitudinal follow-up. As compared to control subjects, the circulating levels of both IL-16 and nucleosomes were increased in untreated patients with WD presenting as intestinal, cardiac or neurological manifestations. This finding was specific to WD since the circulating levels of IL-16 and nucleosomes were not increased in patients with unrelated inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease or Q fever endocarditis. We also found that increased levels of IL-16 and nucleosomes were related to the activity of the disease. Indeed, successful antibiotic treatment decreased those levels down to those of control subjects. In contrast, patients who suffered from relapses exhibited circulating levels of IL-16 and nucleosomes as high as those of untreated patients. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Circulating levels of both IL-16 and nucleosomes were increased in WD. This finding provides simple and non-invasive tools for the diagnosis and the prognosis of WD
