High-pressure investigations of CaTiO3 up to 60 GPa using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy
In this work, we investigate calcium titanate (CaTiO3 - CTO) using X-ray
diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 and 55 GPa respectively. Both
experiments show that the orthorhombic Pnma structure remains stable up to the
highest pressures measured, in contradiction to ab-initio predictions. A fit of
the compression data with a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state
yields a bulk modulus K0 of 181.0(6) GPa. The orthorhombic distortion is found
to increase slightly with pressure, in agreement with previous experiments at
lower pressures and the general rules for the evolution of perovskites under
pressure. High-pressure polarized Raman spectra also enable us to clarify the
Raman mode assignment of CTO and identify the modes corresponding to rigid
rotation of the octahedra, A-cation shifts and Ti-O bond stretching. The Raman

Infrared spectroscopy of Nova Cassiopeiae 1993 (V705 Cas). IV. A closer look at the dust
Nova Cassiopeiae 1993 (V705 Cas) was an archetypical dust-forming nova. It
displayed a deep minimum in the visual light curve, and spectroscopic evidence
for carbon, hydrocarbon and silicate dust. We report the results of fitting the
infrared spectral energy distribution with the DUSTY code, which we use to
determine the properties and geometry of the emitting dust. The emission is
well described as originating in a thin shell whose dust has a carbon:silicate
ratio of ~2:1 by number (1.26:1 by mass) and a relatively flat size
distribution. The 9.7micron and 18micron silicate features are consistent with
freshly-condensed dust and, while the lower limit to the grain size
distribution is not well constrained, the largest grains have dimensions
\~0.06micron; unless the grains in V705 Cas were anomalously small, the sizes
of grains produced in nova eruptions may previously have been overestimated in
novae with optically thick dust shells. Laboratory work by Grishko & Duley may
provide clues to the apparently unique nature of nova UIR features.Comment: 11 pages, 9 fugure
Interactional positioning and narrative self-construction in the first session of psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy
The purpose of this study is to identify possible session one indicators of end of treatment psychotherapy outcome using the framework of three types of interactional positioning; client’s self-positioning, client’s positioning between narrated self and different partners, and the positioning between client and therapist. Three successful cases of 8-session psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) therapy were selected on the basis of client Beck Depression Inventory scores. One unsuccessful case was also selected against which identified patterns could be tested. The successful clients were more descriptive about their problems and demonstrated active rapport-building, while the therapist used positionings expressed by the client in order to explore the positionings developed between them during therapy. The unsuccessful case was characterized by lack of positive self-comment, minimization of agentic self-capacity, and empathy-disrupting narrative confusions. We conclude that the theory of interactional positioning has been useful in identifying patterns worth exploring as early indicators of success in PI therapy
Mid-infrared VISIR and Spitzer observations of the surroundings of the magnetar SGR 1806-20
We report mid-infrared observations of SGR 1806-20 and its environment - with
the highest spatial resolution in this domain to date - using ESO/VISIR in 2005
and 2006, and we retrieved Spitzer/IRAC-MIPS archival data of the same field.
We aimed at studying the mid-infrared emission of the stars associated with
the same cluster as SGR 1806-20, to detect variations that could be due to the
high-energy activity of the magnetar through interaction with the dust. We also
aimed at studying the morphology of the cloud close to the centre of the
cluster.
We performed broadband photometry of three stars - LBV 1806-20, a WC9 and an
O/B supergiant - on our VISIR images, as well as on the IRAC data. We then
built and fitted their broadband spectral energy distributions with a
combination of two absorbed black bodies, representing their stellar
components, as well as a possible mid-infrared excess, in order to derive their
physical parameters.
We show that LBV 1806-20 and the WC9 star exhibit a mid-infrared excess,
likely because of the presence of circumstellar dust related to their winds. We
also show that only LBV 1806-20 had a variable flux over a period of two years,
variability which is due to its LBV nature rather than to a heating of the gas
and dust cloud by the high-energy emission of SGR 1806-20. Finally, differences
in the intrinsic absorptions of the three stars show an inhomogeneous structure
of the density of the gas and dust cloud in the massive star cluster.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted in A&
Differential criterion of a bubble collapse in viscous liquids
The present work is devoted to a model of bubble collapse in a Newtonian
viscous liquid caused by an initial bubble wall motion. The obtained bubble
dynamics described by an analytic solution significantly depends on the liquid
and bubble parameters. The theory gives two types of bubble behavior: collapse
and viscous damping. This results in a general collapse condition proposed as
the sufficient differential criterion. The suggested criterion is discussed and
successfully applied to the analysis of the void and gas bubble collapses.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Escape from NK cell tumor surveillance by NGFR-induced lipid remodeling in melanoma
Metastatic disease is a major cause of death for patients with melanoma. Melanoma cells can become metastatic not only due to cell-intrinsic plasticity but also due to cancer-induced protumorigenic remodeling of the immune microenvironment. Here, we report that innate immune surveillance by natural killer (NK) cells is bypassed by human melanoma cells expressing the stem cell marker NGFR. Using in vitro and in vivo cytotoxic assays, we show that NGFR protects melanoma cells from NK cell–mediated killing and, furthermore, boosts metastasis formation in a mouse model with adoptively transferred human NK cells. Mechanistically, NGFR leads to down-regulation of NK cell activating ligands and simultaneous up-regulation of the fatty acid stearoyl–coenzyme A desaturase (SCD) in melanoma cells. Notably, pharmacological and small interfering RNA–mediated inhibition of SCD reverted NGFR-induced NK cell evasion in vitro and in vivo. Hence, NGFR orchestrates immune control antagonizing pathways to protect melanoma cells from NK cell clearance, which ultimately favors metastatic disease

Comparative analysis, applications, and interpretation of electronic health record-based stroke phenotyping methods
Background
Accurate identification of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patient cohorts is essential for a wide range of clinical investigations. Automated phenotyping methods that leverage electronic health records (EHRs) represent a fundamentally new approach cohort identification without current laborious and ungeneralizable generation of phenotyping algorithms. We systematically compared and evaluated the ability of machine learning algorithms and case-control combinations to phenotype acute ischemic stroke patients using data from an EHR.
Materials and methods
Using structured patient data from the EHR at a tertiary-care hospital system, we built and evaluated machine learning models to identify patients with AIS based on 75 different case-control and classifier combinations. We then estimated the prevalence of AIS patients across the EHR. Finally, we externally validated the ability of the models to detect AIS patients without AIS diagnosis codes using the UK Biobank.
Results
Across all models, we found that the mean AUROC for detecting AIS was 0.963 ± 0.0520 and average precision score 0.790 ± 0.196 with minimal feature processing. Classifiers trained with cases with AIS diagnosis codes and controls with no cerebrovascular disease codes had the best average F1 score (0.832 ± 0.0383). In the external validation, we found that the top probabilities from a model-predicted AIS cohort were significantly enriched for AIS patients without AIS diagnosis codes (60–150 fold over expected).
Conclusions
Our findings support machine learning algorithms as a generalizable way to accurately identify AIS patients without using process-intensive manual feature curation. When a set of AIS patients is unavailable, diagnosis codes may be used to train classifier models
Early-life adversity selectively impairs α2-GABAA receptor expression in the mouse nucleus accumbens and influences the behavioral effects of cocaine
Haplotypes of the Gabra2 gene encoding the α2 subunit of the GABAA receptor (GABAAR) are associated with drug abuse, suggesting that α2-GABAARs may play an important role in the circuitry underlying drug misuse. The genetic association of Gabra2 haplotypes with cocaine addiction appears to be evident primarily in individuals who had experienced childhood trauma. Given this association of childhood trauma, cocaine abuse and the Gabra2 haplotypes, we have explored in a mouse model of early life adversity (ELA) whether such events influence the behavioral effects of cocaine and if, as suggested by the human studies, α2-GABAARs in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) are involved in these perturbed behaviors. In adult mice prior ELA caused a selective decrease of accumbal α2-subunit mRNA, resulting in a selective decrease in the number and size of the α2-subunit (but not the α1-subunit) immunoreactive clusters in NAc core medium spiny neurons (MSNs). Functionally, in adult MSNs ELA decreased the amplitude and frequency of GABAAR-mediated miniature inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mIPSCs), a profile similar to that of α2 "knock-out" (α2-/-) mice. Behaviorally, adult male ELA and α2-/- mice exhibited an enhanced locomotor response to acute cocaine and blunted sensitization upon repeated cocaine administration, when compared to their appropriate controls. Collectively, these findings reveal a neurobiological mechanism which may relate to the clinical observation that early trauma increases the risk for substance abuse disorder (SAD) in individuals harbouring haplotypic variations in the Gabra2 gene.</p
