    Optimization of graphite morphology in mottled Nihard cast irons inoculated with feb and manufactured by centrifugal casting

    The present research was focused on the identification of manufacturing factors that have an active influence on the graphite phase formation in Nihard cast irons inoculated with FeB, constituting the outer layer of duplex work rolls. These rolls are used in the finishing stands of hot-strip steel mills where the following are desired: (a) between 2.5 and 4 vol % of graphite; (b) homogeneous graphite distribution across the layer section; and, (c) a reasonable high number of graphite particles across the layer. The research methodology that followed consisted of the application of a saturated design of experiments (DOE), with seven factors, eight experiments, and resolution III. The analyzed responses obtained by quantitative metallographic techniques were: the volume fraction of graphite, Vv; the number of counts per unit area of graphite, NA; and the graphite morphology across the layer thickness. Increasing the addition of FeB from 6 to 10 kg/T reduced the graphite volume fraction and the count number, but had no influence on its morphology. However, an increase of the liquidus temperature from 1225–1230 to 1250–1255 °C, and an increase in the amount of SiCaMn added to the ladle from 0.3 to 0.6 kg/T produced the desired compact graphite morphology

    X-ray nanoimaging of Nd3+ optically active ions embedded in Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 nanocrystals

    [EN] The spatial distribution of Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 nanocrystals is analyzed in a borate-based glass-ceramic by a synchrotron hard X-ray nanoimaging tool. Based on X-ray excited optical luminescence, we examined 2D projections of the Nd3+ optically active ions in the Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 nanocrystals, as well as in the glassy phase where they are embedded. Our findings reveal areas of agglomerations and/or clusters of nanocrystals ascribed to the diffusion coefficients of their constituent elements. They are characterized by high Nd3+ concentrations that may act as heterogeneous agents for the nucleation and growth of these nanocrystals.     Diagnostic delay in rare diseases: systematic review

    [ES] Fundamentos: Según el Consorcio Internacional para la Investigación de Enfermedades Raras (IRDiRC) el diagnóstico de una enfermedad rara (ER) conocida debería hacerse en el plazo de un año. El objetivo de esta revisión sistemática fue identificar las evidencias científicas sobre el tiempo que transcurre hasta obtener el diagnóstico en pacientes con ER y conocer si se produce retraso, conforme al objetivo del IRDiRC (más de un año). Métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática según criterios PRISMA en las bases de datos PubMed, Scopus y Web of Science (WoS). Se valoró la calidad de los estudios incluidos conforme a la declaración STROBE. Resultados: Se incluyeron 17 artículos orientados a ER específicas, principalmente metabólicas, neurológicas y trastornos que afectan a la inmunidad. Los diseños fueron fundamentalmente transversales, aunque también se incluyeron dos de cohorte retrospectivos. La mayoría de los estudios reflejan que se emplea más de un año en obtener el diagnóstico de estas ER. Conclusiones: La literatura científica que cuantifica el tiempo hasta el diagnóstico en ER es aún escasa y ningún estudio se orienta a estas enfermedades en su conjunto. Según el objetivo del IRDiRC, existe un evidente retraso en el diagnóstico de ER, ya que en la mayoría de los casos se requiere de un tiempo superior a un año. Por tanto, son necesarios nuevos avances en campo de las ER para contribuir a la reducción del tiempo desde la aparición de los síntomas hasta el diagnóstico adecuado [EN] Background: The aims of the International Consortium for Rare Diseases Research (IRDiRC) include that the diagnosis of a known rare disease (RD) must be made within a year. The objective of this systematic review was to identify the scientific evidence about the time to diagnosis in patients affected by RDs and also to know if there is a diagnostic delay (more than one year) according to the objective set by the IRDiRC. Methods: A systematic review was carried out according to PRISMA criteria in the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases. The quality of the articles was assessed using the STROBE statement. Results: 17 articles were included. They were devoted to specific RDs, most of them metabolic diseases, neurological and disorders that affect immunity. The study designs were mainly cross-sectional, and two retrospective cohorts were also included. Most articles showed that it takes more than a year to get a diagnosis for these RDs. Conclusions: Scientific literature quantifying the time to diagnosis is still scarce and no study addresses RDs as a whole. In most cases, it takes more than one year to obtain a diagnosis of a RD, so there is an obvious delay according to the objective set by the IRDiRC. Therefore, new advances in the RD field are necessary to reduce the time from the onset of symptoms to the accurate diagnosis.S

    Rapid and sustainable self-questionnaire for large-scale psychological screening in pandemic conditions for healthcare workers.

    BACKGROUND The pandemic caused by a coronavirus (COVID-19) has shocked healthcare systems worldwide. However, the psychological stressors remain unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of a major pandemic on healthcare workers. We hypothesized that exposure to the virus would be the primary cause of psychological stress perceived by healthcare workers. METHODS A national cross-sectional study conducted via an online questionnaire was distributed between April 9 and April 19, 2020 with a non-probabilistic sample technique. A structural equation model (SEM) was built with the variable "exposure to the virus" and the Psychological Stress and Adaptation at work Score (PSAS). "Exposure to the virus" was defined as the combined factors of 'personal-sphere', "work-related stress" and "hospital characteristics." A generalized linear model (GLM) was also tested. RESULTS A total of 2,197 participants filled in the questionnaire and were analyzed. The exploratory factor analysis showed statistically significant variables related to the personal-sphere, work-related stress and the hospital's characteristics, although the confirmatory factor analysis showed only the work-related stress factors to be significant. The GLM showed that personal-sphere-related variables (P < .001), stress at work (P < 0.001) and age (P < 0.001) were statistically significant. CONCLUSION Physical exposure to the virus is an essential factor that contributes to the psychological impact perceived during the pandemic by healthcare professionals. A combination of personal-sphere variables, work-related stress and hospital characteristics is a significant factor correlating with the degree of stress measured by PSAS, a new and fast instrument to assess stress in healthcare workers

    Diagnostic Process in Rare Diseases: Determinants Associated with Diagnostic Delay

    Many people living with rare disease (RD) report a difficult diagnostic process from the symptom onset until they obtain the definitive diagnosis. The aim of this study was thus to ascertain the diagnostic process in RDs, and explore the determinants related with having to wait for more than one year in this process (defined as “diagnostic delay”). We conducted a case–control study, using a purpose-designed form from the Spanish Rare Diseases Patient Registry for data-collection purposes. A descriptive analysis was performed and multivariate backward logistic regression models fitted. Based on data on 1216 patients living with RDs, we identified a series of determinants associated with experiencing diagnostic delay. These included: having to travel to see a specialist other than that usually consulted in the patient’s home province (OR 2.1; 95%CI 1.6–2.9); visiting more than 10 specialists (OR 2.6; 95%CI 1.7–4.0); being diagnosed in a region other than that of the patient’s residence at the date of symptom onset (OR 2.3; 95%CI 1.5–3.6); suffering from a RD of the nervous system (OR 1.4; 95%CI 1.0–1.8). In terms of time taken to see a specialist, waiting more than 6 months to be referred from the first medical visit was the period of time which most contributed to diagnostic delay (PAR 30.2%). In conclusion, this is the first paper to use a collaborative study based on a nationwide registry to address the diagnostic process of patients living with RDs. While the evidence shows that the diagnostic process experienced by these persons is complex, more studies are needed to determine the implications that this has for their lives and those of their families at a social, educational, occupational, psychological, and financial level.This research was supported by the Spanish State Research Agency, State R&D Program Oriented to the Challenges of the Society, project no.     ENO regulates tomato fruit size through the floral meristem development network

    A dramatic evolution of fruit size has accompanied the domestication and improvement of fruit-bearing crop species. In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), naturally occurring cis-regulatory mutations in the genes of the CLAVATA-WUSCHEL signaling pathway have led to a significant increase in fruit size generating enlarged meristems that lead to flowers with extra organs and bigger fruits. In this work, by combining mapping-by-sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing methods, we isolated EXCESSIVE NUMBER OF FLORAL ORGANS (ENO), an AP2/ERF transcription factor which regulates floral meristem activity. Thus, the ENO gene mutation gives rise to plants that yield larger multilocular fruits due to an increased size of the floral meristem. Genetic analyses indicate that eno exhibits synergistic effects with mutations at the LOCULE NUMBER (encoding SlWUS) and FASCIATED (encoding SlCLV3) loci, two central players in the evolution of fruit size in the domestication of cultivated tomatoes. Our findings reveal that an eno mutation causes a substantial expansion of SlWUS expression domains in a flower-specific manner. In vitro binding results show that ENO is able to interact with the GGC-box cis-regulatory element within the SlWUS promoter region, suggesting that ENO directly regulates SlWUS expression domains to maintain floral stem-cell homeostasis. Furthermore, the study of natural allelic variation of the ENO locus proved that a cis-regulatory mutation in the promoter of ENO had been targeted by positive selection during the domestication process, setting up the background for significant increases in fruit locule number and fruit size in modern tomatoes
