    Characterization qualitative and potentialities of utilization of methacomposts of poultry in the nurseries aboveground

    The Agricultural employment of digestates from biomethanation can be used as an alternative to peat. The solid digestate poultry (called Poultry Methacompost: PMC) can be used as a partial substitute in the manufacture of culture substrates. The humified Organic Matter (OM) of mature substrates can be adopted only with the presence of necessary conditions for the development of the plant especially: respect of pH, percentage favorable of aeration, good sanitation, balanced contents of minerals. The present work aims to evaluate three different PMC from an industrial biomethaniser; one is obtained from the digester and the other two from the decanter (during two different periods). It appears from the physico-chemical characterization undertaken the following key results: In general, the PMC has a high bulk density, insufficient porosity of aeration, while the porosity of retention largely meets the standard. The phosphor and potassium are also eligible. The warranty of quality of PMC ensures greater acceptability and facilitates the incorporation with peat for soilless horticultural plants.Keywords: Poultry manure; Industrial biomethaniser; Poultry Methacompost; Physico-chemical characterization; Nursery abovegroun

    Unlocking the Patterns of the Tunisian Durum Wheat Landraces Genetic Structure Based on Phenotypic Characterization in Relation to Farmer’s Vernacular Name

    During the 1970s, Tunisian durum wheat landraces were replaced progressively by modern cultivars. These landraces are nowadays maintained by smallholder farmers in some ecological niches and are threatened gradually by extinction resulting in the narrowing of the genetic diversity. This study aims to investigate patterns of phenotypic variability using twelve quantitative traits in a panel of 189 durum wheat landraces and seven checks, based on farmer’s population name attribution and genetic structure. Our results showed high phenotypic variability among and within landraces and checks for ten out of twelve studied traits. The principal components analysis showed similar grouping using farmers name attribution and genetic structure using K = 6. These results confirmed the identification of a new gene pool in the oases of Tunisia, represented by the sub-population Jenah Zarzoura and the robustness and high relationships between phenotypic and genome-wide genetic structure using DArTseq method. These findings will enhance the conservation efforts of these landraces and their use in breeding efforts at national and international levels to adapt to dry conditions

    The Influence of Dietary Supplementations on Neuropathic Pain

    Neuropathic pain is defined as pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system and affects 7–10% of the worldwide population. Neuropathic pain can be induced by the use of drugs, including taxanes, thus triggering chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain or as consequence of metabolic disorders such as diabetes. Neuropathic pain is most often a chronic condition, and can be associated with anxiety and depression; thus, it negatively impacts quality of life. Several pharmacologic approaches exist; however, they can lead numerous adverse effects. From this perspective, the use of nutraceuticals and diet supplements can be helpful in relieve neuropathic pain and related symptoms. In this review, we discuss how diet can radically affect peripheral neuropathy, and we focus on the potential approaches to ameliorate this condition, such as the use of numerous nutritional supplements or probiotics

    Le carcinome indifferencie primitif des glandes salivaires est rare. Son association avec le virus Epstein Barr, initialement decrite chez les esquimaux, est retrouvee dans la majorite des cas publies. Nous rapportons un nouveau cas tunisien survenu chez un homme age de 64 ans, revele par une tumefaction de la glande parotide gauche. Microscopiquement se discutait le caractere primitif ou secondaire de la tumeur, etaye par les examens complementaires. Le patient etait traite par une parotidectomie suivie d’un curage ganglionnaire et d’une radiotherapie.     Characterization of Mediterranean durum wheat for resistance to Pyrenophora tritici-repentis

    Tan spot (TS), caused by the fugus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr), has gained significant importance in the last few years, thereby representing a threat to wheat production in all major wheat-growing regions, including Tunisia. In this context, we evaluated a Mediterranean collection of 549 durum wheat accessions under field conditions for resistance to Ptr over two cropping seasons in Jendouba (Tunisia), a hot spot for Ptr. The relative disease severities showed significant phenotypic variation from resistance to susceptibility. The correlation between disease scores over the two trials was significant, as 50% of the accessions maintained good levels of resistance (resistant–moderately resistant). Seedling-and adult-stage reactions were significantly correlated. The ANOVA analysis revealed that the genotype term is highly significant at the adult stage, thus emphasizing the high genetic variability of the tested accessions. Reaction-type comparison among and between countries revealed a high diversity of TS resistance. Plant height (PH) was negatively correlated to disease scores, indicating that PH might either have a significant effect on TS severity or that it can be potential disease escape traits. The evaluation of this collection allowed for the identification of potential diverse resistance sources to Ptr that can be incorporated in breeding programs

    Identification of Durum Wheat Salt Tolerance Sources in Elite Tunisian Varieties and a Targeted FIGS Subset from ICARDA Gene Bank: Non-Destructive and Easy Way

    The success of durum wheat breeding program for salt tolerance improvement depends on sources of tolerance, the screening method and the selection of target traits. In this study, we used morpho-physiological traits to elucidate the phenotypic and genetic variation in salinity tolerance of a 50 internationally derived durum wheat genotypes. Four Australian lines containing salt tolerance Nax genes from CSIRO (The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia); six Tunisian old and new cultivars (Kerim, Khiar, Maali, Mahmoudi, Nasr and Selim) and forty ICARDA’s gene bank landraces selected basing on FIGS Method (Focused Identification of Germplasm Strategy) were evaluated in semi controlled conditions at the INRAT Ariana experimental station. Significant genotypic variation and Pearson's correlations were found among the evaluated traits. The data were converted to salt tolerance indexes (STI) before statistical analysis.The high positive and significantly correlation of STI of grain yield and those of tillering (r=0.46), mean daily evapotranspiration (r=0.46), shoot dry weight (r=0.74), number of spikes per plant (r=0.74), spike length (r=0.30), thousand grain weight (r=0.36) and the chlorophyll content at 79 day after sowing (r=0.30) indicated that salt stress induces a high reduction in these parameters, leading to the reduction in grain yield. Therefore we can consider these parameters as the most relevant for salinity tolerance screening criterion in durum wheat breeding programs. Among the analysed genotypes the ICARDA’s landrace IG-85714 from Greece showed better performances under salt stress. Among the analysed Tunisian varieties Maali and Nasr exhibited some level of tolerance. Approximately half of the analysed genotypes showed a moderate to high level of salt tolerance. These are the first sources for the salt tolerance in durum wheat identified in the ICARDA gene bank. This demonstrated that FIGS was effective for sampling large ex situ germplasm collections when seeking novel genetic sources of salt tolerance.

    Phenotyping mediterranean durum wheat landraces for resistance to Zymoseptoria tritici in Tunisia

    Durum wheat landraces have huge potential for the identification of genetic factors valuable for improving resistance to biotic stresses. Tunisia is known as a hot spot for Septoria tritici blotch disease (STB), caused by the fungus Zymoseptoria tritici (Z. tritici). In this context, a collection of 3166 Mediterranean durum wheat landraces were evaluated at the seedling and adult stages for STB resistance in the 2016–2017 cropping season under field conditions in Kodia (Tunisia). Unadapted/susceptible accessions were eliminated to reach the final set of 1059 accessions; this was termed the Med-collection, which comprised accessions from 13 countries and was also screened in the 2018–2019 cropping season. The Med-collection showed high frequency of resistance reactions, among which over 50% showed an immune reaction (HR) at both seedling and adult growth stages. Interestingly, 92% of HR and R accessions maintained their resistance levels across the two years, confirming the highly significant correlation found between seedling-and adult-stage reactions. Plant Height was found to have a negative significant effect on adult-stage resistance, suggesting that either this trait can influence disease severity, or that it can be due to environmental/epidemiological factors. Accessions from Italy showed the highest variability, while those from Portugal, Spain and Tunisia showed the highest levels of resistance at both growth stages, suggesting that the latter accessions may harbor novel QTLs effective for STB resistance

    The HIF1α/JMY pathway promotes glioblastoma stem-like cell invasiveness after irradiation

    Human glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary malignant brain tumor. A minor subpopulation of cancer cells, known as glioma stem-like cells (GSCs), are thought to play a major role in tumor relapse due to their stem cell-like properties, their high resistance to conventional treatments and their high invasion capacity. We show that ionizing radiation specifically enhances the motility and invasiveness of human GSCs through the stabilization and nuclear accumulation of the hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α), which in turn transcriptionally activates the Junction-mediating and regulatory protein (JMY). Finally, JMY accumulates in the cytoplasm where it stimulates GSC migration via its actin nucleation-promoting activity. Targeting JMY could thus open the way to the development of new therapeutic strategies to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy and prevent glioma recurrence.The authors thank members of the LRP for helpful discussions and are indebted to V.     Deciphering resistance to Zymoseptoria tritici in the Tunisian durum wheat landrace accession ‘Agili39’

    Septoria tritici blotch (STB), caused by Zymoseptoria tritici (Z. tritici), is an important biotic threat to durum wheat in the entire Mediterranean Basin. Although most durum wheat cultivars are susceptible to Z. tritici, research in STB resistance in durum wheat has been limited. Results: In our study, we have identified resistance to a wide array of Z. tritici isolates in the Tunisian durum wheat landrace accession ‘Agili39’. Subsequently, a recombinant inbred population was developed and tested under greenhouse conditions at the seedling stage with eight Z. tritici isolates and for five years under field conditions with three Z. tritici isolates. Mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) resulted in the identification of two major QTL on chromosome 2B designated as Qstb2B_1 and Qstb2B_2. The Qstb2B_1 QTL was mapped at the seedling and the adult plant stage (highest LOD 33.9, explained variance 61.6%), conferring an effective resistance against five Z. tritici isolates. The Qstb2B_2 conferred adult plant resistance (highest LOD 32.9, explained variance 42%) and has been effective at the field trials against two Z. tritici isolates. The physical positions of the flanking markers linked to Qstb2B_1 and Qstb2B_2 indicate that these two QTL are 5 Mb apart. In addition, we identified two minor QTL on chromosomes 1A (Qstb1A) and chromosome 7A (Qstb7A) (highest LODs 4.6 and 4.0, and explained variances of 16% and 9%, respectively) that were specific to three and one Z. tritici isolates, respectively. All identified QTL were derived from the landrace accession Agili39 that represents a valuable source for STB resistance in durum wheat. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that Z. tritici resistance in the ‘Agili39’ landrace accession is controlled by two minor and two major QTL acting in an additive mode. We also provide evidence that the broad efficacy of the resistance to STB in ‘Agili 39’ is due to a natural pyramiding of these QTL. A sustainable use of this Z. tritici resistance source and a positive selection of the linked markers to the identified QTL will greatly support effective breeding for Z. tritici resistance in durum wheat
