    Predictors of administrative innovation: functions and organizational methods - Mexican and Colombian hospitals

    Objectiv e To determine to what extent functions and organizational methods influence on administrative innovation. Design/methodology/approach This research is quantitative approach, with a not experimental and transversal design. The hypothesis was supported by using a transactional study with a sample of Mexican and Colombian hospitals through the perception of their high and medium level managers. The hospital sampling was by convenience. Findings Organizational functions and methods are associated and are predictors of administrative innovation. Practical implications As long as the hospital encourages the development of training and knowledge methods, autonomy methods for employees are developed, and when performance appraisal takes place in hospital, new methods will be able to develop and organize the routines and the management procedures, allocation of responsibilities and power among employees could be developed, as well as to develop new structure concepts for workplace, organizational practices and external relationships

    El clavo gamma en las fracturas proximales de fémur

    El clavo Gamma constituye una alternativa a los clavos condilocefálicos de Ender y al clavo-placa o tornillo deslizante en las fracturas de cadera. Hemos revisado retrospectivamente las 50 primeras fracturas del extremo proximal de fémur en el anciano tratadas por nosotros con esta técnica. En 45 casos se trataba de fracturas inestables. El 68% de los pacientes dados de alta hospitalaria han sido revisados durante 6 meses. La mortalidad intrahospitalaria ha sido del 18%. Hemos permitido en todos los casos con independencia del tipo de fractura la deambulación en carga en el postoperatorio inmediato, no habiéndose producido ninguna movilización de la fractura ni fracaso del material. La consolidación se ha producido en todos los casos con una media de 10 semanas. El clavo Gamma concede una buena estabilidad en las fracturas inestables del extremo proximal del fémur, permite la carga precoz sin fracasos mecánicos. La calidad de vida postfractura de los pacientes mejora sensiblemente.The Gamma nail seems to be an alternative to the endomedullar flexible Ender's nail and the sliding screw-plate for trochanteric fractures of the hip. We have retrospectively reviewed the first 50 fractures of the proximal femur in the elderly treated in our hands by this technique. There were 45 unstable fractures. At 6 months after surgery, only 68% of the patients discharged from the hospital were assessed. Intrahospitalary mortality reached 18%. Weight-bearing was allowed from the early postoperative period independently of the type of fracture. No mechanical failures were observed. Fracture repair was achieved in an average period of 10 months. The Gamma nail provides a good stability in unstable fractures of the proximal femur, allowining an early weight-bearing without mechanical failures. The patient's quality of life after fracture is therefore improved by using this method of internal fixation

    Assessment of physical pre-treatments for the recovery of biosurfactants in corn steep water prior to advanced membrane-based water treatment

    The aim of this work is to evaluate different physical pre-treatments for corn steep water (CSW) to obtain a cleaner, concentrated water stream in biosurfactants for further advanced water treatment, involving not only the decontamination of water but also the complete recycling of CSW. Three physical treatments were tested: i) decantation, ii) centrifugation, and iii) vacuum filtration under different temperatures. After these pre-treatments, several parameters were evaluated. Results showed that centrifugation at 4 °C (C4L) is the best alternative for concentrating biocompounds as it produced a cleaner stream with a greater lightness (from 0.45 to 92.9–96.2) and lower turbidity than decantation or vacuum filtration but with a higher content in biosurfactants. Moreover, it was observed that acidification of C4L produced a decrease in the surface tension properties of CSW compatible with the precipitation and/or denaturalization of lipopeptides and proteins, whereas basification did not produce any relevant effect. Acidification or basification during pre-treatment of CSW was therefore dismissed with the recommendation of performing a simple centrifugation step at 4 °C as a pre-treatment, prior to recovering bioactive compounds using advanced membrane water treatmentsUniversidade de Vigo / CISUGAgencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref.     Action observation neurorehabilitation systems are usually based on the observation of a virtual limb performing different kinds of actions. In this way, the activity in the frontoparietal Mirror Neuron System is enhanced, which can be helpful to rehabilitate stroke patients.     Acousto-optic interaction in biconical tapered fibers: shaping of the stopbands

    The effect of a gradual reduction of the fiber diameter on the acousto-optic (AO) interaction is reported. The experimental and theoretical study of the intermodal coupling induced by a flexural acoustic wave in a biconical tapered fiber shows that it is possible to shape the transmission spectrum, for example, substantially broadening the bandwidth of the resonant couplings. The geometry of the taper transitions can be regarded as an extra degree of freedom to design the AO devices. Optical bandwidths above 45 nm are reported in a tapered fiber with a gradual reduction of the fiber down to 70 μm diameter. The effect of including long taper transition is also reported in a double-tapered structure. A flat attenuation response is reported with 3-dB stopband bandwidth of 34 nm

    Mapping ultrafast dynamics of highly excited D2 + by ultrashort XUV pump-IR probe radiation

    An ultrashort XUV laser pulse ionizes the D2 molecule creating an electronic and nuclear wave packet, with the dominant contributions from the 2sσg and 2pπu ionic states. A delayed interaction with a 780 nm IR field ejects the second electron, leading to the Coulomb explosion of the molecule, whose nuclear fragments, recorded in coincidence, map the dynamics associated to those two ionic excited states. By varying the orientation of the light polarization, one can control the molecular dynamics by modifying the ratio between the ionic states.     Antecedents of energy consumption intention to usage by home energy management system: a case study of Galicia's homes in Spain

    The residential sector is a substantial consumer of energy in Spain. A new electricity tariff was applied in Spain to make home consumers manage their energy consumption based on the variation of electricity price during the day, which contributes to energy security, increases the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the grid, maintains grid stability, and reduce CO2 emissions. To ensure the successful implementation of the new Demand Response (DR) program, it is necessary to investigate the factors that might affect home energy consumers to use the Home Energy Management System (HEMS). This work aims to examine the factors that affect the Spanish home energy consumers' acceptance to participate in DR, which have not been studied yet after the new electricity tariff. In addition, highlighting the role of economic benefits and environmental awareness factors in the acceptance of participating in DR using HEMS. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is used in this work with four independent factors, attitude toward use as a mediating effect, and one dependent variable of intention to use, then hypotheses were set for each. The selected research method was a diagnostic survey technique through a standardized survey questionnaire distributed in person and online, that Galicia, Northwest Spain was taken as a case study. In terms of the statistical results of Probability value (P-value) and Critical Ratio (C.R.), it was found that the family's economic benefits and environmental awareness affect the attitude toward using HEMS after the new electricity tariff in Spain and attitude toward using HEMS has a significant impact on the intention to use HEMS. However, the usefulness and ease of using HEMS for managing energy consumption do not influence the consumers' attitudes toward adopting HEMS. The direct effect of usefulness on the intention of using HEMS is higher than the indirect effect through attitude. Thus, the mediating effect of the attitude to the relationships between usefulness and intention to use is not significant. The results help the Spanish policymakers to draw up policies to effectively disseminate strategies to encourage home consumers to contribute to energy security and assist energy management researchers in incorporating key factors that impact energy consumers into their proposed models. By doing so, these models can clarify the financial and environmental advantages of effective energy consumption management, thereby encouraging energy consumers to adopt more sustainable practices

    Atlantic mammal traits: a dataset of morphological traits of mammals in the atlantic forest of south America

    Measures of traits are the basis of functional biological diversity. Numerous works consider mean species-level measures of traits while ignoring individual variance within species. However, there is a large amount of variation within species and it is increasingly apparent that it is important to consider trait variation not only between species, but also within species. Mammals are an interesting group for investigating trait-based approaches because they play diverse and important ecological functions (e.g., pollination, seed dispersal, predation, grazing) that are correlated with functional traits. Here we compile a data set comprising morphological and life history information of 279 mammal species from 39,850 individuals of 388 populations ranging from −5.83 to −29.75 decimal degrees of latitude and −34.82 to −56.73 decimal degrees of longitude in the Atlantic forest of South America. We present trait information from 16,840 individuals of 181 species of non-volant mammals (Rodentia, Didelphimorphia, Carnivora, Primates, Cingulata, Artiodactyla, Pilosa, Lagomorpha, Perissodactyla) and from 23,010 individuals of 98 species of volant mammals (Chiroptera). The traits reported include body mass, age, sex, reproductive stage, as well as the geographic coordinates of sampling for all taxa. Moreover, we gathered information on forearm length for bats and body length and tail length for rodents and marsupials. No copyright restrictions are associated with the use of this data set.
