    The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library in San Jose, California is a unique dual-use library serving the students of San Jose State University and the community of San Jose, California. The reference collections of the two libraries are merged and interfiled to promote ease of access for both populations served. Economies of scale were realized through collaborative collection development activities for major reference purchases between the two institutions. This article describes the planning and creation of the King Library\u27s merged reference collection and reviews the literature of collaborative collection development and merged or interfiled collections

    Universal aging properties at a disordered critical point

    We investigate, analytically near the dimension duc=4d_{uc}=4 and numerically in d=3d=3, the non equilibrium relaxational dynamics of the randomly diluted Ising model at criticality. Using the Exact Renormalization Group Method to one loop, we compute the two times t,twt,t_w correlation function and Fluctuation Dissipation Ratio (FDR) for any Fourier mode of the order parameter, of finite wave vector qq. In the large time separation limit, the FDR is found to reach a non trivial value XX^{\infty} independently of (small) qq and coincide with the FDR associated to the the {\it total} magnetization obtained previously. Explicit calculations in real space show that the FDR associated to the {\it local} magnetization converges, in the asymptotic limit, to this same value XX^{\infty}. Through a Monte Carlo simulation, we compute the autocorrelation function in three dimensions, for different values of the dilution fraction pp at Tc(p)T_c(p). Taking properly into account the corrections to scaling, we find, according to the Renormalization Group predictions, that the autocorrelation exponent λc\lambda_c is independent on pp. The analysis is complemented by a study of the non equilibrium critical dynamics following a quench from a completely ordered state.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Protein expression and genetic variability of canine Can f 1 in golden and Labrador retriever service dogs.

    BackgroundValued for trainability in diverse tasks, dogs are the primary service animal used to assist individuals with disabilities. Despite their utility, many people in need of service dogs are sensitive to the primary dog allergen, Can f 1, encoded by the Lipocalin 1 gene (LCN1). Several organizations specifically breed service dogs to meet special needs and would like to reduce allergenic potential if possible. In this study, we evaluated the expression of Can f 1 protein and the inherent variability of LCN1 in two breeds used extensively as service dogs. Saliva samples from equal numbers of male and female Labrador retrievers (n = 12), golden retrievers (n = 12), and Labrador-golden crosses (n = 12) were collected 1 h after the morning meal. Can f 1 protein concentrations in the saliva were measured by ELISA, and the LCN1 5' and 3' UTRs and exons sequenced.ResultsThere was no sex effect (p > 0.2) nor time-of-day effect; however, Can f 1 protein levels varied by breed with Labrador retrievers being lower than golden retrievers (3.18 ± 0.51 and 5.35 ± 0.52 μg/ml, respectively, p < 0.0075), and the Labrador-golden crosses having intermediate levels (3.77 ± 0.48 μg/ml). Although several novel SNPs were identified in LCN1, there were no significant breed-specific sequence differences in the gene and no association of LCN1 genotypes with Can f 1 expression.ConclusionsAs service dogs, Labrador retrievers likely have lower allergenic potential and, though there were no DNA sequence differences identified, classical genetic selection on the estimated breeding values associated with salivary Can f 1 expression may further reduce that potential

    National Innovation and the Role of the College Sector

    This paper discusses the role of the colleges in applied research in the context of Canada's capability for innovation in a globally competitive arena. The analysis focuses upon issues around an expanded mandate related to applied research. To explore the state of readiness of the college sector, it draws upon the results of a survey distributed to 150 college and institute presidents in Canada, as well as upon other recent studies. The discussion ends with suggested policy avenues to maximize the effectiveness of this sector's contribution to the nation's innovation agenda.Cet article discute le rôle que peuvent jouer les collèges en recherche appliquée alors que le Canada essaie d'accroître sa capacité à innover dans un contexte de concurrence mondiale. L'analyse est particulièrement ciblée sur les effets que pourrait avoir la reconnaissance de la recherche appliquée dans le mandat des collèges. L'article s'appuie entre autres sur une enquête distribuée à près de 150 présidents de collèges et instituts de même que sur d'autres études très récentes. Pour conclure, des pistes de politiques de recherche sont mises en évidence afin de maximiser la contribution du secteur collégial à l'efficience du dossier national de l'innovation

    A study of the effects of the Transition Years\u27 Pilot Project on the retention rate of French as a First Language students in Kent County (Ontario).

    Grades seven, eight and nine students in the French Section of the Kent County Roman Catholic Separate School Board served as the focal group in this research study which examined the relationship between the implementation of the Transition Years\u27 Pilot Project from 1990 to 1993 and the retention rate of its Francophone students, as calculated from 1986 to 1993. The Ontario Ministry of Education suggested that the pilot schools concentrate their action plans on the following eleven areas of focus: career education, community involvement, core curriculum, facilitating transitions, gender equity, guidance and special education, innovative in-service, remediation and enrichment, school organization, student assessment and technological studies. The retention rate of Francophone adolescents remaining in the French as a First Language School program increased, therefore supporting the claim that the successful implementation of the eleven areas of focus of the Transition Years\u27 Pilot Project had a positive effect. If the retention rate for Francophone students increases by implementing the eleven areas of focus targeted by the Transition Years\u27 initiative, it suggests that students in majority settings may want to remain in school longer as well in response to the Transition Years\u27 initiatives.     Results of an Environmental Scan to Determine the Level of Uncorrected Refractive Error in First Nations Elementary School Children in Ontario

    A survey was developed and used to determine the level and quality of vision care services available to First Nations elementary school children across Ontario, and to indirectly determine the level of uncorrected refractive error in First Nations children. Overall, the total survey results showed that 1 child in 4 wore glasses. The results from the survey indicated that remote communities that had a visiting optometrist were more likely to have fewer cases of uncorrected refractive error than non-remote communities. The results suggest that in-community comprehensive eye exams delivered on a regular basis by visiting optometrists would be the most effective way of improving the vision and eye health status of First Nations children

    Non Markovian persistence in the diluted Ising model at criticality

    We investigate global persistence properties for the non-equilibrium critical dynamics of the randomly diluted Ising model. The disorder averaged persistence probability Pcˉ(t)\bar{{P}_c}(t) of the global magnetization is found to decay algebraically with an exponent θc\theta_c that we compute analytically in a dimensional expansion in d=4ϵd=4-\epsilon. Corrections to Markov process are found to occur already at one loop order and θc\theta_c is thus a novel exponent characterizing this disordered critical point. Our result is thoroughly compared with Monte Carlo simulations in d=3d=3, which also include a measurement of the initial slip exponent. Taking carefully into account corrections to scaling, θc\theta_c is found to be a universal exponent, independent of the dilution factor pp along the critical line at Tc(p)T_c(p), and in good agreement with our one loop calculation.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    A Persistent High-Energy Flux from the Heart of the Milky Way : Integral's view of the Galactic Center

    The Ibis/Isgri imager on Integral detected for the first time a hard X-ray source, IGR J17456-2901, located within 1' of Sgr A* over the energy range 20-100 keV. Here we present the results of a detailed analysis of ~7 Ms of Integral observations of the GC. With an effective exposure of 4.7 Ms we have obtained more stringent positional constraints on this HE source and constructed its spectrum in the range 20-400 keV. Furthermore, by combining the Isgri spectrum with the total X-ray spectrum corresponding to the same physical region around SgrA* from XMM data, and collected during part of the Integral observations, we constructed and present the first accurate wide band HE spectrum for the central arcmins of the Galaxy. Our complete analysis of the emission properties of IGR shows that it is faint but persistent with no variability above 3 sigma contrary to what was alluded to in our first paper. This result, in conjunction with the spectral characteristics of the X-ray emission from this region, suggests that the source is most likely not point-like but, rather, that it is a compact, yet diffuse, non-thermal emission region. The centroid of IGR is estimated to be R.A.=17h45m42.5, decl.=-28deg59'28'', offset by 1' from the radio position of Sgr A* and with a positional uncertainty of 1'. Its 20-400 keV luminosity at 8 kpc is L=5.4x10^35 erg/sec. Very recently, Hess detected of a source of ~TeV g-rays also located within 1' of Sgr A*. We present arguments in favor of an interpretation according to which the photons detected by Integral and Hess arise from the same compact region of diffuse emission near the central BH and that the supernova remnant Sgr A East could play an important role as a contributor of very HE g-rays to the overall spectrum from this region.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap
