Palatini wormholes and energy conditions from the prism of General Relativity

    Get PDF
Wormholes are hypothetical shortcuts in spacetime that in General Relativity unavoidably violate all of the pointwise energy conditions. In this paper, we consider several wormhole spacetimes that, as opposed to the standard \emph{designer} procedure frequently employed in the literature, arise directly from gravitational actions including additional terms resulting from contractions of the Ricci tensor with the metric, and which are formulated assuming independence between metric and connection (Palatini approach). We reinterpret such wormhole solutions under the prism of General Relativity and study the matter sources that thread them. We discuss the size of violation of the energy conditions in different cases, and how this is related to the same spacetimes when viewed from the modified gravity side.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. A 52-year-old man presented with left hemifacial spasm (HFS). A magnetic resonance imaging scan showed compression of the left facial nerve at the cerebellopontine angle by a dolichoectatic basilar artery. The neurotological evaluation showed an otolithic deficit, with canalicular preservation and normal hearing. The deficit improved after surgical decompression. No previous report has described the impairment of vestibular function in patients presenting with HFS

A Theoretical Construction of Thin Shell Wormhole from Tidal Charged Black hole

Recently, Dadhich et al [ Phys.Lett.B 487, 1 (2000)] have discovered a black hole solution localized on a three brane in five dimensional gravity in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. In this article, we develop a new class of thin shell wormhole by surgically grafting above two black hole spacetimes. Various aspects of this thin wormhole are also analyzed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, Accepted in Gen.Rel.Gra

En esta ?ltima etapa los estudiantes mostraron avances y soluciones a la problem?tica, su desenvolvimiento en escena y la emotividad que tuvieron al realizar la presentaci?n, previamente estaban ansiosos, pero todo eso quedo olvidado cuando son? la m?sica e iniciaron la presentaci?n.Pedagogical intervention Project ? theater for strengthening oral expression in cycle 2 of the INSTITUTO COMERCIAL LORETO?s students of the eight town, district of Castilla; was held to involve students in the development of the oral expression, which affected for different factors, reflected in the language use and isolated their partners, without verbal interaction evidenced through. Research, participatory action and the use and ethnographic tools such as field diaries, case studies and interviews applied to a population sample of 25 students in cycle 2, which were recorded and systematized to analyze the results and proceed to design and implement. This project was implemented with the purpose to strengthen oral expression in students; this was done in 20 sessions, divided into four workshops: diagnosis, where the problem is evidenced. Sensibilisation, students approached the knowledge of theater. Exploration, relaxation techniques, improvisation, musidrama and control breathing through the twister and monologue were used. Application, the students approached a rolplay theater, recognize elements and participants preparing to submit staging. In this last stage, the students showed progress and solution to the problem, this development stage and the emotion that had to make the presentation, the students were previously anxious, but all that was forgotten when the music played and began the presentation. Fractal dimension analysis of grey matter in multiple sclerosis

    Get PDF
The fractal dimension (FD) is a quantitative parameter that characterizes the morphometric variability of a complex object. Among other applications, FD has been used to identify abnormalities of the human brain in conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including white matter abnormalities in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Extensive grey matter (GM) pathology has been recently identified in MS and it appears to be a key factor in long-term disability. The aim of the present work was to assess whether FD measurement of GM in T1 MRI sequences can identify GM abnormalities in patients with MS in the early phase of the disease. A voxel-based morphometry approach optimized for MS was used to obtain the segmented brain, where we later calculated the three-dimensional FD of the GM in MS patients and healthy controls. We found that patients with MS had a significant increase in the FD of the GM compared to controls. Such differences were present even in patients with short disease durations, including patients with first attacks of MS. In addition, the FD of the GM correlated with T1 and T2 lesion load, but not with GM atrophy or disability. The FD abnormalities of the GM here detected differed from the previously published FD of the white matter in MS, suggesting that different pathological processes were taking place in each structure. These results indicate that GM morphology is abnormal in patients with MS and that this alteration appears early in the course of the disease

Convincing the crowd: entrepreneurial storytelling in crowdfunding campaigns

    Get PDF
This study examines the structure of entrepreneurial stories in pursuit of mobilizing resources from crowds. Based on a comparative analysis of Kickstarter crowdfunding campaigns, we examine in particular how, across different project types, project histories and potential futures are framed and interlinked in narratives to appeal to funders. We find that projects are narrated in different styles—as ongoing journeys” or “results-inprogress”— to convey project value. The former style narrates projects as longer-term endeavors powered by creative initial ideas and a bold vision, inviting audiences to “join the journey”; the latter narrates projects more narrowly as a progression of accomplishments, engaging the audience instrumentally to support next steps. We find that styles are used and combined in different ways, reflecting the tangibility of project outcomes, the sophistication of technology, and the social orientation of projects. Also, successful differ from unsuccessful campaigns in using narratives more coherently. Findings inform research on narrative processes in entrepreneurship and innovation, and research on the mobilization of crowds

Thin-shell wormholes with a generalized Chaplygin gas in Einstein-Born-Infeld theory

    Get PDF
We construct spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes supported by a generalized Chaplygin gas in Born-Infeld electrodynamics coupled to Einstein gravity, and we analyze their stability under radial perturbations. For different values of the Born-Infeld parameter and the charge, we compare the results with those obtained in a previous work for Maxwell electrodynamics. The stability region in the parameter space reduces and then disappears as the value of the Born-Infeld parameter is modified in the sense of a larger departure from Maxwell theory.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures; v2: improved versio
