Out-of-plane focusing grating couplers for silicon photonics integration with optical MRAM technology
We present the design methodology and experimental characterization of compact out-of-plane focusing grating couplers for integration with magnetoresistive random access memory technology. Focusing grating couplers have recently found attention as layer-couplers for photonic-electronic integration. The components we demonstrate are designed for a wavelength of 1550 nm, fabricated in a standard 220 nm SOI photonic platform and optimized given the fabrication restrictions for standard 193-nm UV lithography. For the first time, we extend the design based on the phase matching condition to a two-dimensional (2-D) grating design with two optical input ports. We further present the experimental characterization of the focusing behaviour by spatially probing the emitted beam with a tapered-and-lensed fiber and demonstrate the polarization controlling capabilities of the 2-D FGCs
Design optimization for energy-efficient pulse-switching networks in carrier-injection based Si-photonics
We compare pulse-switching operations in MZI- and ring-switches both experimentally and based on large-signal circuit simulations. With a modification in switch design and with optimization of phase modulator lengths, we show high-speed switches with potential for an over 3 dB improvement in energy consumption
Webcam Eye Tracking for Desktop and Mobile Devices: A Systematic Review
Building the Internet of Behaviors (IOB) obviously requires capturing human behavior. Sensor input from eye tracking has been widely used for profiling in market research, adaptive user interfaces, and other smart systems, but requires dedicated hardware. The wide spread of webcams in consumer devices like phones, tablets, notebooks, and smart TVs has fostered eye tracking with commodity cameras. In this paper, we present a systematic review across the IEEE and ACM databases -- complemented by snowballing and input from eye tracking experts at CHI 2021 -- to list and characterize publicly available webcam eye trackers that estimate the point-of-regard on devices with no additional hardware. Information from articles was supplemented by searching author websites and code repositories, and contacting authors. 16 eye trackers were found that can be used. The restrictions regarding license terms and technical performance are presented, enabling developers to choose an appropriate software for their IoB application
Spectroscopic study of the O-type runaway supergiant HD 195592
The scope of this paper is to perform a detailed spectroscopic study of the
northern O-type supergiant HD 195592. We use a large sample of high quality
spectra in order to investigate its multiplicity, and to probe the line profile
variability. Our analysis reveals a clear spectroscopic binary signature in the
profile of the He {\sc i} 6678 line, pointing to a probable O + B
system. We report on low amplitude radial velocity variations in every strong
absorption line in the blue spectrum of HD 195592. These variations are ruled
by two time-scales respectively of 5.063 and about 20 days. The former is
firmly established, whilst the latter is poorly constrained. We report also on
a very significant line profile variability of the H line, with time
scales strongly related to those of the radial velocities. Our results provide
significant evidence that HD 195592 is a binary system, with a period that
might be the variability time-scale of about 5 days. The second time scale may
be the signature of an additional star moving along a wider orbit provided its
mass is low enough, even though direct evidence for the presence of a third
star is still lacking. Alternatively, the second time-scale may be the
signature of a variability intrinsic to the stellar wind of the primary,
potentially related to the stellar rotation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 postscript figures, accepted for publication in New

Out-of-plane focussing polarization control grating couplers for photonic-spintronic integration
We demonstrate the first out-of-plane 2D focusing grating coupler (FGC), designed for compact photonic-spintronic integration allowing full polarization control of the emitted light. The couplers are designed for a standard 220nm-SOI platform and fabricated with 193 nm UV lithography. These couplers can find applicability as polarization (de)multiplexers, optical layer couplers or to realize optically enabled spintronic memory based on helicity dependent all-optical switching (AOS)[1,2]
Presolar Grains from Novae: Evidence from Neon and Helium Isotopes in Comet Dust Collections
Presolar grains in meteorites and interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) carry
non-solar isotopic signatures pointing to origins in supernovae, giant stars,
and possibly other stellar sources. There have been suggestions that some of
these grains condensed in the ejecta of classical nova outbursts, but the
evidence is ambiguous. We report neon and helium compositions in particles
captured on stratospheric collectors flown to sample materials from comets
26P/Grigg-Skjellerup and 55P/Tempel-Tuttle that point to condensation of their
gas carriers in the ejecta of a neon (ONe) nova. The absence of detectable 3He
in these particles indicates space exposure to solar wind (SW) irradiation of a
few decades at most, consistent with origins in cometary dust streams. Measured
4He/20Ne, 20Ne/22Ne, 21Ne/22Ne and 20Ne/21Ne isotope ratios, and a low upper
limit on 3He/4He, are in accord with calculations of nucleosynthesis in neon
nova outbursts. Of these, the uniquely low 4He/20Ne and high 20Ne/22Ne ratios
are the most diagnostic, reflecting the large predicted 20Ne abundances in the
ejecta of such novae. The correspondence of measured Ne and He compositions in
cometary matter with theoretical predictions is evidence for the presence of
presolar grains from novae in the early solar system.Comment: As appeared in the Astrophysical Journa
Spectroscopic study of the variability of three northern Of+ supergiants
The transition from early Of stars to WN type objects is poorly understood.
O-type supergiants with emission lines (OIf+) are considered to be intermediate
between these two classes. The scope of this paper is to investigate the
spectral variability of three Of+ supergiants. We constituted spectral time
series of unprecedented quality for our targets (~ 200 spectra in total),
essentially in the blue domain, covering time-scales from a few hours up to a
few years. Time Variance Spectrum (TVS) and Fourier analyses were performed in
order to characterize their spectral variability. We report on a correlated
significant line profile variability in the prominent He II \lambda 4686 and
H\beta lines most likely related to the strong stellar winds. The variability
pattern is similar for the three stars investigated (HD14947, HD15570 and
HD16691), and the main differences are more quantitative than qualitative.
However, the reported time-scales are somewhat different, and the most striking
variability pattern is reported for HD16691. We did not find any clear evidence
for binarity, and we focus mainly on an interpretation based on a single star
scenario. We show that the behaviour of the three stars investigated in this
study present strong similarities, pointing to a putative common scenario, even
though a few differences should be noted. Our preferred interpretation scheme
is that of Large Scale Corotating Structures modulating the profile of the
lines that are produced in the strong stellar wind.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (author

Evidence for a physically bound third component in HD 150136
Context. HD150136 is one of the nearest systems harbouring an O3 star.
Although this system was for a long time considered as binary, more recent
investigations have suggested the possible existence of a third component.
Aims. We present a detailed analysis of HD 150136 to confirm the triple nature
of this system. In addition, we investigate the physical properties of the
individual components of this system. Methods. We analysed high-resolution,
high signal-to-noise data collected through multi-epoch runs spread over ten
years. We applied a disentangling program to refine the radial velocities and
to obtain the individual spectra of each star. With the radial velocities, we
computed the orbital solution of the inner system, and we describe the main
properties of the orbit of the outer star such as the preliminary mass ratio,
the eccentricity, and the orbital-period range. With the individual spectra, we
determined the stellar parameters of each star by means of the CMFGEN
atmosphere code. Results. We offer clear evidence that HD 150136 is a triple
system composed of an O3V((f\ast))-3.5V((f+)), an O5.5-6V((f)), and an
O6.5-7V((f)) star. The three stars are between 0-3 Myr old. We derive dynamical
masses of about 64, 40, and 35 Msun for the primary, the secondary and the
third components by assuming an inclination of 49{\deg}. It currently
corresponds to one of the most massive systems in our galaxy. The third star
moves with a period in the range of 2950 to 5500 d on an outer orbit with an
eccentricity of at least 0.3. This discovery makes HD 150136 the first
confirmed triple system with an O3 primary star. However, because of the long
orbital period, our dataset is not sufficient to constrain the orbital solution
of the tertiary component with high accuracy.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted at A&
Towards high-speed energy-efficient pulse-switching networks implemented in carrier-injection-based si-photonics
We show that carrier injection based Si-photonics modulators [1] can form the basis for building compact, low-loss and power efficient reconfigurable networks, enabling the switching of ps-pulse trains with sub-GHz repetition rates. The use of pre-emphasis-based activation [2] permits ns-scale switching transitions. Although the steady-state energy consumption in this platform is well studied, the impact of the dynamic energy consumption for these ns switching periods is not well known. Here, we show pre-emphasis-based sub-ns transitions and present a novel large-signal analysis that allows the driving scheme optimization for energy-efficient pulse switching
