A Simulated Microgravity Environment Causes a Sustained Defect in Epithelial Barrier Function.
Intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) junctions constitute a robust barrier to invasion by viruses, bacteria and exposure to ingested agents. Previous studies showed that microgravity compromises the human immune system and increases enteropathogen virulence. However, the effects of microgravity on epithelial barrier function are poorly understood. The aims of this study were to identify if simulated microgravity alters intestinal epithelial barrier function (permeability), and susceptibility to barrier-disrupting agents. IECs (HT-29.cl19a) were cultured on microcarrier beads in simulated microgravity using a rotating wall vessel (RWV) for 18 days prior to seeding on semipermeable supports to measure ion flux (transepithelial electrical resistance (TER)) and FITC-dextran (FD4) permeability over 14 days. RWV cells showed delayed apical junction localization of the tight junction proteins, occludin and ZO-1. The alcohol metabolite, acetaldehyde, significantly decreased TER and reduced junctional ZO-1 localization, while increasing FD4 permeability in RWV cells compared with static, motion and flask control cells. In conclusion, simulated microgravity induced an underlying and sustained susceptibility to epithelial barrier disruption upon removal from the microgravity environment. This has implications for gastrointestinal homeostasis of astronauts in space, as well as their capability to withstand the effects of agents that compromise intestinal epithelial barrier function following return to Earth
The -metric naked singularity: A viable explanation for the nature of the central object in the Milky Way
In this work, we investigate whether the compact object at the center of the
Milky Way is a naked singularity described by the -metric
spacetime. Our fitting of the astrometric and spectroscopic data for the S2
star implies that similarly to the Schwarzschild black hole, the
-metric naked singularity offers a satisfactory fit to the observed
measurements. Additionally, it is shown that the shadow produced by the naked
singularity is consistent with the shadow observed by the Event Horizon
Telescope collaboration for Sgr-A*. It is worth mentioning that the spatial
distribution of the S-stars favors the notion that the compact object at the
center of our Galaxy can be described by an almost static spacetime. Based on
these findings, the -metric naked singularity turns up as a

Unsupervised learning as a complement to convolutional neural network classification in the analysis of saccadic eye movement in spino-cerebellar ataxia type 2

En esta edición han participado 150 investigadores.This paper aims at assessing spino-cerebellar type 2 ataxiaby classifying electrooculography records into registers corresponding to healthy, presymptomatic and ill individuals. The primary used technique is the convolutional neural network applied to the time series of eye movements, called saccades. The problem is exceptionally hard, though, because the recorded saccadic movements for presymptomatic cases often do not substantially di er from those of healthy individuals. Precisely
this distinction is of the utmost clinical importance, since early intervention on presymptomatic patients can ameliorate symptoms or at least slow their progression. Yet, each register contains a number of saccades that, although not consistent with the current label, have not been considered indicative of another class by the examining physicians. As a consequence, an unsupervised learning mechanism may be more suitable to handle this form of misclassi cation. Thus, our proposal introduces the

Generation of two-photon EPR and Wstates
In this paper we present a scheme for generation of two-photon EPR and W
states in the cavity QED context. The scheme requires only one three-level
Rydberg atom and two or three cavities. The atom is sent to interact with
cavities previously prepared in vacuum states, via two-photon process. An
appropriate choice of the interaction times one obtains the mentioned state
with maximized fidelities. These specific times and the values of success

This paper studies the liberalization of the Mexican lemon market in a world perspective using a spatial equilibrium model with endogenous prices. Several scenarios were designed related to the lemon market involving the countries that integrate NAFTA, and MEUFTA, and the removal of commercial barriers related to this fruit. The potential impact of eliminating tariffs on commercial flows, prices, and welfare are estimated. The results suggest that Mexico will benefit from NAFTA, and MEUFTA, as well as, the removal of commercial barriers in the world lemon market.
An earth pole-sitter using hybrid propulsion
In this paper we investigate optimal pole-sitter orbits using hybrid solar sail and solar electric propulsion (SEP). A pole-sitter is a spacecraft that is constantly above one of the Earth's poles, by means of a continuous thrust. Optimal orbits, that minimize propellant mass consumption, are found both through a shape-based approach, and solving an optimal control problem, using a direct method based on pseudo-spectral techniques. Both the pure SEP case and the hybrid case are investigated and compared. It is found that the hybrid spacecraft allows consistent savings on propellant mass fraction. Finally, is it shown that for sufficiently long missions (more than 8 years), a hybrid spacecraft, based on mid-term technology, enables a consistent reduction in the launch mass for a given payload, with respect to a pure SEP spacecraft
New heterodontosaurid remains from the Canadon Asfalto Formation: cursoriality and the functional importance of the pes in small heterodontosaurids
New ornithischian remains reported here (MPEF-PV 3826) include two complete metatarsi with associated phalanges and caudal vertebrae, from the late Toarcian levels of the Canadon Asfalto Formation. We conclude that these fossil remains represent a bipedal heterodontosaurid but lack diagnostic characters to identify them at the species level, although they probably represent remains of Manidens condorensis, known from the same locality. Histological features suggest a subadult ontogenetic stage for the individual. A cluster analysis based on pedal measurements identifies similarities of this specimen with heterodontosaurid taxa and the inclusion of the new material in a phylogenetic analysis with expanded character sampling on pedal remains confirms the described specimen as a heterodontosaurid. Finally, uncommon features of the digits (length proportions among nonungual phalanges of digit III, and claw features) are also quantitatively compared to several ornithischians, theropods, and birds, suggesting that this may represent a bipedal cursorial heterodontosaurid with gracile and grasping feet and long digits. In particular, the elongated non-terminal pedal phalanges and morphology of digit III resemble features present in arboreal birds, a unique condition found so far among ornithischians
