Nowadays, one of the most extended resources utilized by novelists are the socalled retellings. The retellings are adaptations of original fairy tales into modernized novels which aim to attract the attention of a different audience. As this term has been recently developed, there is not a unique methodology to follow in order to distinguish which characteristics it should contain. The purpose of this dissertation is, once the recurrent features from different analysis about retellings and adaptations have been selected, analyze three of them about Alice in Wonderland (1865). The novels are studied and compared with the original tale by Lewis Carroll with the emphasis on some elements such as the development and peculiarities of the story, the psychological and physical appearance of the characters, and the narrative style of the author.

    Get PDF

Bioconversion of Cheese Whey and Food By-Products by Phaeodactylum tricornutum into Fucoxanthin and n-3 Lc-PUFA through a Biorefinery Approach

    Get PDF
This study investigates the potential of utilizing three food wastes: cheese whey (CW), beet molasses (BM), and corn steep liquor (CSL) as alternative nutrient sources for the cultivation of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, a promising source of polyunsaturated eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and the carotenoid fucoxanthin. The CW media tested did not significantly impact the growth rate of P. tricornutum; however, CW hydrolysate significantly enhances cell growth. BM in cultivation medium enhances biomass production and fucoxanthin yield. The optimization of the new food waste medium was conducted through the application of a response surface methodology (RSM) using hydrolyzed CW, BM, and CSL as factors. The results showed a significant positive impact of these factors (p < 0.005), with an optimized biomass yield of 2.35 g L-1 and a fucoxanthin yield of 3.64 mg L-1 using a medium composed of 33 mL L-1 of CW, 2.3 g L-1 of BM, and 2.24 g L-1 of CSL. The experimental results reported in this study showed that some food by-products from a biorefinery perspective could be utilized for the efficient production of fucoxanthin and other high-added-value products such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research (MIUR)The Spanish Ministry of Science, Education, and Universities/Spanish State Research Agency (PCI2018-093178)Co-funding by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation progra

Philopatry and natal dispersal of Montagu's harriers (Circus pygargus) breeding in Spain: a review of existing data

et al.Natal dispersal is an important component of bird ecology, plays a key role in many ecological and evolutionary processes, and has important conservation implications. Nevertheless, detailed knowledge on natal dispersal is still lacking in many bird species, especially raptors. We review and compile existing information from five tagging programmes of juvenile Montagu's harriers (Circus pygargus) in different Spanish regions, with PVC rings or wing tags, to provide an assessment of philopatry and natal dispersal of the species in Spain. Only 7% of all tagged harriers were observed as breeders in subsequent years. The percentage of philopatric (i. e. breeding within 10 km of the natal site) males and females was lower that 5%. Overall, there were no sexual differences in percentage of philopatric birds or dispersal distances, but we found study area differences. The low philopatry observed suggests a high capacity for natal dispersal in this species, for both sexes, and therefore high genetic mixing between populations. Differences in philopatry between study areas may be influenced by the different observation effort or detectability, or else reflect different philopatric strategies among populations. Finally, we found no significant differences in philopatry rate or dispersal distances related to tagging method, suggesting that tagging technique has a smaller effect than monitoring effort or observation ease on observation probability. Developing tagging programmes at a small scale and without procuring very large-scale and intensive subsequent monitoring is not worthwhile for evaluating philopatry and natal dispersal in this species. We are grateful to the Servicio de Biodiversidad from Conselleria de Medio Ambiente, Agua, Urbanismo y Vivienda (Generalitat Valenciana) for providing data from the Castellón area. Revisiting the anion framework conservation in cation exchange processes

    Get PDF
We investigated the effect of cation exchange on the anionic framework of lightly doped CdSe:Te/CdS nanorods. In contrast with previously studied core/shell systems, the Te dopant, located in the center of the CdSe core, provides an extremely sensitive indicator for any structural changes of the anionic framework that may occur as a result of the cation exchange process. We first optimized the cation exchange procedure in order to retain the fluorescence properties of the CdSe:Te/CdS nanorods after exchange of Cd2+ for Cu+ and back to Cd2+. Next, using multiexciton spectroscopy, we were able to probe the magnitude of the exciton exciton repulsion interaction and use that to assess the degree of crystal structure conservation. Our findings provide a much stronger proof that the anion framework is indeed rigid, showing no evidence of significant migration of the anionic dopant
