    Asociación entre consumo de alcohol y exceso de peso entre estudiantes universitarios de América Latina

    Introducción: El sobrepeso y la obesidad son problemas de salud pública de nivel mundial. Si bien existe información respecto al consumo de alcohol en estudiantes universitarios durante la pandemia, pocos autores han señalado la asociación entre este hábito y el exceso de peso en esta población. El objetivo fue determinar la asociación entre el consumo de alcohol y el exceso de peso en estudiantes universitarios de 10 países de Latinoamérica durante la pandemia por COVID-19. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio transversal y multicéntrico con 4.539 estudiantes universitarios matriculados en diez países de América Latina. Para la valoración del consumo de alcohol se utilizó la pregunta ¿Consumes bebidas alcohólicas? (1 porción 1 vaso de 200 ml). El índice de masa corporal (IMC) se determinó a partir del peso y la altura auto informado. Para determinar si el exceso de peso (IMC ≥25 kg/m2 ) estaba asociado con el consumo de alcohol, se utilizó un análisis de regresión logística, ajustado por edad, sexo, año de estudio, nivel socioeconómico, actividad física y tabaquismo. Resultados: Entre los estudiantes con estado nutricional normal, un 59,6% no consumía alcohol, mientras entre los que presentaban un exceso de peso era un 55,1%. Los estudiantes que consumían 2 o más porciones de alcohol al día tenían 2,18 veces más riesgo de tener exceso de peso (OR: 2.18 [95% IC: 1,26 a 3,77]), comparado con aquellos que no consumían alcohol. Conclusión: Se observó que aquellos estudiantes que consumieron más alcohol tuvieron más probabilidades de tener exceso de peso.     Dietary Patterns and Dietary Recommendations Achievement From Latin American College Students During the COVID-19 Pandemic Lockdown

    This study aimed to compare the diet quality of different dietary patterns among college students from Latin American countries, including vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional, observational, multicenter study was conducted including a non- probabilistic sample of university students from 10 countries. University students were invited to participate in the study through social network platforms. Participants were self-reported to have followed a specific dietary pattern; either the Prudent diet, Western diet, Ovo-dairy-vegetarian diet, Fish-vegetarian diet, Strict vegetarian diet (vegan) or other. The last three patterns (vegetarians and vegans) were grouped as following a plant-based diet. A self-assessment survey was used to evaluate healthy eating habits using a questionnaire with values between 1 (do not consume) and 5 (consume) for a total of 9–45 points (higher values represent better eating habits). Unhealthy habits were assessed with nine questions. A total of 4,809 students filled out the questionnaire, and the majority of them were females (73.7%). Murillo et al. College Dietary Patterns During COVID-19 A high percentage have been in lockdown for more than 5 months and were in lockdown when the survey was released. 74.3% were self-reported to follow a prudent diet, while 11.4% reported following a western dietary pattern and 8.8% a plant-based diet. When compliance with healthy and unhealthy dietary habits was analyzed, although all groups had low compliance, the plant-based diet group (56.09 ± 6.11) performed better than the Western diet group (48.03 ± 5.99). The total diet quality score was significantly higher for plant-based diet followers, who also tended to better achieve the recommendations than omnivorous students, especially the ones following a western diet. These results present evidence that young adults such as college-aged students have unhealthy dietary habits.     Peripheral T-lymphocytes express WNT7A and its restoration in leukemia-derived lymphoblasts inhibits cell proliferation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>WNT7a, a member of the Wnt ligand family implicated in several developmental processes, has also been reported to be dysregulated in some types of tumors; however, its function and implication in oncogenesis is poorly understood. Moreover, the expression of this gene and the role that it plays in the biology of blood cells remains unclear. In addition to determining the expression of the <it>WNT7A </it>gene in blood cells, in leukemia-derived cell lines, and in samples of patients with leukemia, the aim of this study was to seek the effect of this gene in proliferation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed peripheral blood mononuclear cells, sorted CD3 and CD19 cells, four leukemia-derived cell lines, and blood samples from 14 patients with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and 19 clinically healthy subjects. Reverse transcription followed by quantitative Real-time Polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis were performed to determine relative <it>WNT7A </it>expression. Restoration of WNT7a was done employing a lentiviral system and by using a recombinant human protein. Cell proliferation was measured by addition of WST-1 to cell cultures.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>WNT7a is mainly produced by CD3 T-lymphocytes, its expression decreases upon activation, and it is severely reduced in leukemia-derived cell lines, as well as in the blood samples of patients with ALL when compared with healthy controls (<it>p </it>≤0.001). By restoring <it>WNT7A </it>expression in leukemia-derived cells, we were able to demonstrate that WNT7a inhibits cell growth. A similar effect was observed when a recombinant human WNT7a protein was used. Interestingly, restoration of <it>WNT7A </it>expression in Jurkat cells did not activate the canonical Wnt/β-catenin pathway.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>To our knowledge, this is the first report evidencing quantitatively decreased <it>WNT7A </it>levels in leukemia-derived cells and that <it>WNT7A </it>restoration in T-lymphocytes inhibits cell proliferation. In addition, our results also support the possible function of <it>WNT7A </it>as a tumor suppressor gene as well as a therapeutic tool.</p

    El programa curricular de EBA forma parte del Currículo Nacional de Educación Básica y su finalidad es contribuir con orientaciones específicas que permitan concretar la propuesta pedagógica del CNEB. Además, se constituye como el documento orientador para la toma de decisiones pedagógicas a nivel regional, local e institucional. El programa curricular de EBA para los ciclos inicial e intermedio se ha estructurado en dos partes: la primera, contiene los aspectos generales como el perfil de egreso, las características de los estudiantes, las características de la modalidad, los enfoques transversales; asimismo, las orientaciones para la planificación y la evaluación, orientaciones para el desarrollo de los aprendizajes, la tutoría y orientación educativa, y los espacios educativos. En la segunda parte, se presentan las competencias organizadas en las áreas curriculares, así como, los desempeños que se alinean a los niveles de los estándares prescritos para los ciclos de la modalidad

    La Constitución Política del Perú establece que la educación es un derecho fundamental de la persona y de la sociedad. El Estado garantiza el ejercicio del derecho a una educación integral y de calidad para todos y la universalización de la Educación Básica. La Ley General de Educación Nº 28044, en un esfuerzo de transformación estructural del sistema educativo nacional, institucionaliza la Educación Básica Alternativa (EBA) como modalidad equivalente a la Educación Básica Regular en calidad y logros de aprendizaje; enfatiza la preparación para el trabajo y el desarrollo de capacidades empresariales de los estudiantes. La EBA se organiza flexiblemente en función de las necesidades y demandas específicas de los estudiantes, que por diversas razones no accedieron o no culminaron la Educación Básica Regular y necesitan compatibilizar el trabajo con el estudio. Asimismo, admite el reconocimiento de sus trayectorias educativas y experiencias de vida. Así, como la existencia de otros espacios educativos en la comunidad, que fortalecen los aprendizajes de los estudiantes y son reconocidos a través de mecanismos adecuados de convalidación, revalidación o evaluación de ubicación, según normatividad vigente. El Currículo es la base de la política pedagógica nacional y es elaborada por el Ministerio de Educación (Minedu). Mediante Resolución Ministerial Nº 281-2016-MINEDU, modificada por Resolución Ministerial Nº 159-2017-MINEDU, se aprueba el Currículo Nacional de la Educación Básica (CNEB) que establece los aprendizajes que se espera logren los estudiantes como resultado de su formación básica en concordancia con los fines y principios de la Educación Peruana, el Proyecto Educativo Nacional y los objetivos de la Educación Básica

    Burnout among surgeons before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an international survey

    Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10&nbsp;years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37&nbsp;years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training.     Presencia de dientes natales o neonatales en pacientes pediátricos con y sin labio y paladar hendido

    Objective: To determine the presence of natal and neonatal teeth in pediatric patients with/without cleft lip and palate who have been seen in a tertiary hospital from 2019-2020, by reviewing clinical records. Methods: Retrospective, descriptive observational study and review of patient records from 2019-2020. Results: In the third level hospital 15 births are reported per day, 5475 per year. Of these, 110 babies with natal teeth were identified in the nursery, 84 patients with cleft lip and palate were identified in consultation, with a ratio of 1:50, with a higher prevalence in lower central teeth. Their management was solved with extractions in all cases, due to tooth mobility and the potential risk in feeding by bronchial aspiration of the patient. Conclusions: Neonatal and natal teeth were found more frequently in patients in the tertiary level units consulted, possibly because they were referral centers. Confusion was identified among health personnel regarding the nomenclature of the teeth that patients present at birth (neonatal teeth), and a high frequency of natal teeth was found in the patients studied in this case. The relevance lies in the fact that there are no studies that define the reason why patients are born with teeth. The answer may be related to a hormonal factor of the mother, although no evidence on this has been found. While neonatal teeth occurred less frequently, there are no conclusive studies either.Objetivo: determinar la presencia de dientes natales y neonatales en pacientes pediátricos con/sin labio y paladar hendido, que han sido atendidos en un hospital de tercer nivel de 2019-2020, mediante la revisión de expedientes clínicos. Métodos: estudio retrospectivo, observacional descriptivo y revisión de expedientes de pacientes atendidos de 2019-2020. Resultados: en el hospital de tercer nivel se reportan 15 nacimientos por día, 5475 al año. De estos, se identificaron 110 bebés con dientes natales revisados en cuneros, 84 pacientes con labio y paladar hendido en consulta, con una relación de 1:50, mayor prevalencia en dientes inferiores centrales. Su manejo fue resuelto con extracciones en todos los casos, debido a la movilidad dental y el riesgo potencial en la alimentación por bronco aspiración del paciente. Conclusiones: los dientes neonatales y natales se encontraron con mayor frecuencia en pacientes de unidades de tercer nivel consultadas, posiblemente por ser centros de referencia. Se identificó confusión en el personal de salud respecto a la nomenclatura de los dientes que presentan los pacientes al nacer (dientes neonatales), además, se encontró una alta frecuencia de dientes natales en los pacientes estudiados en este caso. La relevancia se encuentra en que no hay estudios que definan la razón del porqué los pacientes nacen con dientes. La respuesta puede estar relacionada con un factor hormonal de la madre, aunque no se ha encontrado evidencia sobre esto. Mientras que los dientes neonatales se presentaron con menor frecuencia, tampoco hay estudios concluyentes

    Hierarchical clusters in families with type 2 diabetes

    Families represent more than a set of individuals; family is more than a sum of its individual members. With this classification, nurses can identify the family health-illness beliefs obey family as a unit concept, and plan family inclusion into the type 2 diabetes treatment, whom is not considered in public policy, despite families share diet, exercise, and self-monitoring with a member who suffers type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine whether the characteristics, functionality, routines, and family and individual health in type 2 diabetes describes the differences and similarities between families to consider them as a unit. We performed an exploratory, descriptive hierarchical cluster analysis of 61 families using three instruments and a questionnaire, in addition to weight, height, body fat percentage, hemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. The analysis produced three groups of families. Wilk’s lambda demonstrated statistically significant differences provided by age (Λ = 0.778, F = 2.098, p = 0.010) and family health (Λ = 0.813, F = 2.650, p = 0.023). A post hoc Tukey test coincided with the three subsets. Families with type 2 diabetes have common elements that make them similar, while sharing differences that make them unique
