    Get PDF
[Excerpt] Analyses of union leadership roles show that union presidents should have both a within-union focus and an external focus. The authors combined multi-level survey data from 3,871 union members in 248 local teachers’ unions with archival and field staff data to examine relationships between leadership and members’ perceptions of union instrumentality and justice, union commitment, and participation. The results showed significant union-level effects on members’ beliefs about, and attitudes toward, their unions, attributable to the presidents’ internal and external leadership, wage outcomes, and union characteristics. Relationships between internally focused leadership and members’ loyalty and willingness to work for the union were partially mediated by perceptions of union instrumentality and justice. These perceptions fully mediated the relationship between externally focused leadership and union loyalty

    Get PDF
The Aegean Sea is risky for marine accidents due to its geography and dense vessel traffic. Revealing the patterns of marine accidents in the region is essential for preventing such accidents in the future. With this motivation, this study analyzes the data on maritime accidents in the Aegean Sea Turkish Search and Rescue Region. For this purpose, the descriptive analysis of the 576 marine accidents in the region between 2001 and 2020 was accomplished. Moreover, by applying hypothesis tests, the relationships between the factors that affect the occurrence of marine accidents were investigated. As a result, the most common contributing factors to the event of accidents were revealed. The relationships between the variables of the data set were determined. Accordingly, the type of ship with the most accident are yacht/recreational boat. Hull/machinery failure is the most common type of accident, and summer is the most frequent season for maritime accidents. It was revealed that there are significant relationships between the variables such as the type of accident, the sub-region where the accident occurred, the time of the accident, and the ship type. Finally, deficiencies were evaluated, and suggestions were made for more effective investigation and prevention of accidents

    Branding in Art Marketing

    Get PDF
All the products and services produced are rapidly transforming into commercial commodities in the century we live in. The rapid development of marketing techniques is the most important reason for this process. The fact that art marketing is a sub-discipline within the scope of marketing is a fairly new field. It leads to the complexity of art marketing, the existence of marketing principles in a directly non-profit field such as art. The art market that exists today shows how important brand value can be. When the world market is evaluated, it is observed that the value of big brands increases rapidly. The most important reason for this situation is the decrease in the time of the consumer to evaluate this product with the increase in the product range offered to the market. In this case, the consumer group starts to turn to the market leader without making any evaluation. Nowadays, it is seen that the works of art exhibited in galleries with high brand value gain more material value. In this study, although the subject of marketing in art is broad, it is limited to the way art interprets painting, sculpture and ceramics, and the marketing process and dimensions in art are tried to be examined within the framework of branding and branding strategies in art

This research was carried out on eight-year-old trees of the Mondial Gala (Malus domestica Borkh) cultivars grafted on the M9 rootstock in order to determine its performance in the Mediterranean region with subtropical climatic conditions in Mersin, Turkey. In the study, flowering times, yield and fruit quality parameters were investigated. Mondial Gala planted with planting spaces of 1x3 m. According to the results, first flowering was observed on April 1, full flowering on April 10 and end of flowering on April 17, and fruits were harvested at the end of July. The fruit weight (average 223.2 g), the yield per tree (average 22.6 kg), and yield per trunk cross-sectional area was observed as 0.56 kg/cm2 at the end of the eighth year. Observed values indicated that Mondial Gala summer apple cultivars were found to be promising for early apple growing in the higher parts of subtropical ecological conditions of Turkey

The analytical characterization of cultural heritage materials has a great importance in terms of gaining the scientific knowledge which provides guidance for conservation applications covering the re-integration and re-production processes needed in protection. In this study, the glazed tile samples of a 15th century monument located in southeast Anatolia are investigated and a comprehensive archaeometric data for restoration and conservation is created. XRF and EDX were used to reveal the chemical composition of tile bodies and particularly the glazes. SEM and petrography analyses were employed to examine the micro and macro structural features of the bodies, respectively. Samples were exposed to X-ray diffraction for characterization of the mineral/phase contents. Furthermore, thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry were the complementary methods. The mineralogical content of the samples suggested a firing temperature of ca 850-900oC. The chemical composition of the tile fabrics indicated use of calcareous raw materials due to relatively high CaO content. It was deduced that the alkaline and lead oxides were the main components of the glazes, with low lead oxide (˂5 wt.%) for the samples PS-2, PS-4, PS-5 and PS-6. It was also seen that the blue/green turquoise colors were obtained with copper, whereas blue itself was due to cobalt. Tin was occasionally detected in chemical composition of some glazed surfaces, and its presence was mostly attributed to the purpose of gaining opaqueness

3-D Mesh geometry compression with set partitioning in the spectral domain

    Get PDF
This paper explains the development of a highly efficient progressive 3-D mesh geometry coder based on the region adaptive transform in the spectral mesh compression method. A hierarchical set partitioning technique, originally proposed for the efficient compression of wavelet transform coefficients in high-performance wavelet-based image coding methods, is proposed for the efficient compression of the coefficients of this transform. Experiments confirm that the proposed coder employing such a region adaptive transform has a high compression performance rarely achieved by other state of the art 3-D mesh geometry compression algorithms. A new, high-performance fixed spectral basis method is also proposed for reducing the computational complexity of the transform. Many-to-one mappings are employed to relate the coded irregular mesh region to a regular mesh whose basis is used. To prevent loss of compression performance due to the low-pass nature of such mappings, transitions are made from transform-based coding to spatial coding on a per region basis at high coding rates. Experimental results show the performance advantage of the newly proposed fixed spectral basis method over the original fixed spectral basis method in the literature that employs one-to-one mappings. This work was supported in part by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey, and conducted under Project 106E064Publisher's Versio
