    On the predictive power of Local Scale Invariance

    Local Scale Invariance (LSI) is a theory for anisotropic critical phenomena designed in the spirit of conformal invariance. For a given representation of its generators it makes non-trivial predictions about the form of universal scaling functions. In the past decade several representations have been identified and the corresponding predictions were confirmed for various anisotropic critical systems. Such tests are usually based on a comparison of two-point quantities such as autocorrelation and response functions. The present work highlights a potential problem of the theory in the sense that it may predict any type of two-point function. More specifically, it is argued that for a given two-point correlator it is possible to construct a representation of the generators which exactly reproduces this particular correlator. This observation calls for a critical examination of the predictive content of the theory.Comment: 17 pages, 2 eps figure

    Ageing in bosonic particle-reaction models with long-range transport

    Ageing in systems without detailed balance is studied in bosonic contact and pair-contact processes with Levy diffusion. In the ageing regime, the dynamical scaling of the two-time correlation function and two-time response function is found and analysed. Exact results for non-equilibrium exponents and scaling functions are derived. The behaviour of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is analysed.     Reliable lightweight systems capable of providing electrical power at the magawatt level are a requirement for future manned space exploration missions. This can be achieved by the development of high temperature insulating materials which are not only capable of surviving the hostile space environment but can contribute to reducing the mass and weight of the heat rejection system. In this work, Apical, Upilex, Kapton, Teflon AF, and Peek polymers are characterized for AC and DC dielectric breakdown in air and in silicone oil at temperatures up to 250 C. The materials are also tested in terms of their dielectric constant and dissipation factor at high temperatures with an electrical stress of 60 Hz, 200 V/mil present. The effects of thermal aging on the properties of the films are determined after 15 hours of exposure to 200 and 250 C, each. The results obtained are discussed and conclusions are made concerning the suitability of these dielectrics for use in capacitors and cable insulations in high temperature environments

    We have derived a closed form analytic expression for the asymptotic motion of a pair of identical ions in a high precision Penning trap. The analytic solution includes the effects of special relativity and the Coulomb interaction between the ions.     Coccolithophore fluxes in the open tropical North Atlantic: influence of thermocline depth, Amazon water, and Saharan dust

    Coccolithophores are calcifying phytoplankton and major contributors to both the organic and inorganic oceanic carbon pumps. Their export fluxes, species composition, and seasonal patterns were determined in two sediment trap moorings (M4 at 12 degrees N, 49 degrees W and M2 at 14 degrees N, 37 degrees W) collecting settling particles synchronously from October 2012 to November 2013 at 1200 m of water depth in the open equatorial North Atlantic. The two trap locations showed a similar seasonal pattern in total coccolith export fluxes and a predominantly tropical coccolithophore settling assemblage. Species fluxes were dominated throughout the year by lower photic zone (LPZ) taxa (Florisphaera profunda, Gladiolithus flabellatus) but also included upper photic zone (UPZ) taxa (Umbellosphaera spp., Rhabdosphaera spp., Umbilicosphaera spp., Helicosphaera spp.). The LPZ flora was most abundant during fall 2012, whereas the UPZ flora was more important during summer. In spite of these similarities, the western part of the study area produced persistently higher fluxes, averaging 241 x 10(7) +/- 76 x 10(7) coccoliths m(-2) d(-1) at station M4 compared to only 66 x 10(7) +/- 31 x 10(7) coccoliths m(-2) d(-1) at station M2. Higher fluxes at M4 were mainly produced by the LPZ species, favoured by the westward deepening of the thermocline and nutricline. Still, most UPZ species also contributed to higher fluxes, reflecting enhanced productivity in the western equatorial North Atlantic. Such was the case of two marked flux peaks of the more opportunistic species Gephyrocapsa muellerae and Emiliania huxleyi in January and April 2013 at M4, indicating a fast response to the nutrient enrichment of the UPZ, probably by wind-forced mixing. Later, increased fluxes of G. oceanica and E. huxleyi in October-November 2013 coincided with the occurrence of Amazon-River-affected surface waters. Since the spring and fall events of 2013 were also accompanied by two dust flux peaks, we propose a scenario in which atmospheric dust also provided fertilizing nutrients to this area. Enhanced surface buoyancy associated with the river plume indicates that the Amazon acted not only as a nutrient source, but also as a surface density retainer for nutrients supplied from the atmosphere. Nevertheless, lower total coccolith fluxes during these events compared to the maxima recorded in November 2012 and July 2013 indicate that transient productivity by opportunistic species was less important than "background" tropical productivity in the equatorial North Atlantic. This study illustrates how two apparently similar sites in the tropical open ocean actually differ greatly in ecological and oceanographic terms.     Evaluation of enrichment, transport, and detection methods relating to Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC)

    Master of ScienceDepartment of Food ScienceRandall PhebusShiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are Gram negative rod-shaped bacteria that are causative agents of foodborne disease. While natural flora in the gastrointestinal tracts of bovines and other ruminants, certain enterohemorrhagic STEC strains cause serious or even fatal disease when ingested. In 2012, the USDA identified six STEC serotypes (O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145) as particularly dangerous (in addition to O157:H7; STEC-7) based upon data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and designated them adulterants in raw ground beef, its component materials, and non-intact raw beef products. This research addressed three important components for detection of the recently declared STEC adulterant serotypes. Part one evaluated traditional E. coli O157 selective enrichment media, and additional media types and additive levels, for STEC-7 cultural amplification. Buffered peptone water (BPW), universal pre-enrichment broth (UPB), tryptic soy broth (TSB), TSB with 8 mg/L novobiocin, Escherichia coli broth (EC), and EC with 5, 8, and 20 mg/L novobiocin added were evaluated. EC broth performed equally well compared to non-selective media types, but addition of novobiocin supplement, typically used to suppress overgrowth by background flora, suppressed non-O157 STEC growth. Higher levels of novobiocin inhibited most serotypes. Part two tested the ability of transport media to maintain original STEC-7 concentrations as samples are transported to analytical laboratories. Transport media BPW, maximum recovery diluent (MRD), and Cary-Blair transport medium (CB) were inoculated with individual STEC serotypes and held at 4 or 10 °C for 72 h. Growth/survival curves indicated that CB maintained STEC-7 populations nearest to inoculation levels during storage at either temperature. Part three, part of a field study determining STEC-7 prevalence rates for cattle, hides and dressed carcasses, compared qualitative results generated by two molecular-based detection systems (BioControl Assurance GDS® and Neogen NeoSeek™), analyzing 576 selectively enriched beef carcass sponge samples collected from a commercial processing facility. The GDS and NeoSeek systems indicated 28.7 and 6.1 percent presumptive positive rates for STEC-7, respectively. It was speculated the higher GDS prevalence rate was due to false-positive determinations from the mixed culture enrichments, as viable STEC-7 cells were not recovered by immuno-magnetic bead culture isolation

    A novel, aerosol-nanocrystal floating-gate device for non-volatile memory applications

    This paper describes the fabrication, and structural and electrical characterization of a new, aerosol-nanocrystal floating-gate FET, aimed at non-volatile memory (NVM) applications. This aerosol-nanocrystal NVM device features program/erase characteristics comparable to conventional stacked gate NVM devices, excellent endurance (>l0^5 P/E cycles), and long-term non-volatility in spite of a thin bottom oxide (55-60Ă…). In addition, a very simple fabrication process makes this aerosol-nanocrystal NVM device a potential candidate for low cost NVM applications

    The scalar bi-spectrum during preheating in single field inflationary models

    In single field inflationary models, preheating refers to the phase that immediately follows inflation, but precedes the epoch of reheating. During this phase, the inflaton typically oscillates at the bottom of its potential and gradually transfers its energy to radiation. At the same time, the amplitude of the fields coupled to the inflaton may undergo parametric resonance and, as a consequence, explosive particle production can take place. A priori, these phenomena could lead to an amplification of the super-Hubble scale curvature perturbations which, in turn, would modify the standard inflationary predictions. However, remarkably, it has been shown that, although the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable does undergo narrow parametric instability during preheating, the amplitude of the corresponding super-Hubble curvature perturbations remain constant. Therefore, in single field models, metric preheating does not affect the power spectrum of the large scale perturbations. In this article, we investigate the corresponding effect on the scalar bi-spectrum. Using the Maldacena's formalism, we analytically show that, for modes of cosmological interest, the contributions to the scalar bi-spectrum as the curvature perturbations evolve on super-Hubble scales during preheating is completely negligible. Specifically, we illustrate that, certain terms in the third order action governing the curvature perturbations which may naively be expected to contribute significantly are exactly canceled by other contributions to the bi-spectrum. We corroborate selected analytical results by numerical investigations.
