A High-Resolution Sensor Network for Monitoring Glacier Dynamics
This paper provides an overview of a wide area wireless sensor network that was deployed on the calving front of the Helheim Glacier in Greenland during the summer of 2013. The purpose of the network was to measure the flow rate of the glacier using accurate satellite positioning data. The challenge in this extreme environment was to collect data in real time at the calving edge of the glacier. This was achieved using a solar powered 2.4-GHz Zigbee wireless sensor network operated in a novel hybrid cellular/mesh access architecture consisting of ice nodes communicating with base stations placed on the rock adjacent to the glacier. This highly challenging transmission environment created substantial signal outage conditions, which were successfully mitigated by a radio network diversity scheme. The network development and measurement campaign were highly successful yielding significant results on glacial dynamics associated with climate change
Predicting total reaction cross sections for nucleon-nucleus scattering
Nucleon total reaction and neutron total cross sections to 300 MeV for 12C
and 208Pb, and for 65 MeV spanning the mass range, are predicted using
coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding of effective
nucleon-nucleon interactions with realistic nuclear ground state densities.
Good to excellent agreement is found with existing data.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
14Be(p,n)14B reaction at 69 MeV in inverse kinematics
A Gamow-Teller (GT) transition from the drip-line nucleus 14Be to 14B was
studied via the (p,n) reaction in inverse kinematics using a secondary 14Be
beam at 69 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method is employed to reconstruct
the energy spectrum. A peak is observed at an excitation energy of 1.27(2) MeV
in 14B, together with bumps at 2.08 and 4.06(5) MeV. The observed forward
peaking of the state at 1.27 MeV and a good description for the differential
cross section, obtained with a DWBA calculation provide support for the 1+
assignment to this state. By extrapolating the cross section to zero momentum
transfer the GT-transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare
well with that reported in a beta-delayed neutron emission study.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Microscopic calculation of proton capture reactions in mass 60-80 region and its astrophysical implications
Microscopic optical potentials obtained by folding the DDM3Y interaction with
the densities from Relativistic Mean Field approach have been utilized to
evaluate S-factors of low-energy reactions in mass 60-80 region
and to compare with experiments. The Lagrangian density FSU Gold has been
employed. Astrophysical rates for important proton capture reactions have been
calculated to study the behaviour of rapid proton nucleosynthesis for waiting
point nuclei with mass less than A=80
Lambda-proton correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions
The prospect of using lambda-proton correlations to extract source sizes in
relativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated. It is found that the strong
interaction induces a large peak in the correlation function that provides more
sensitive source size measurements than two-proton correlations under some
circumstances. The prospect of using lambda-proton correlations to measure the
time lag between lambda and proton emissions is also studied.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure, revtex style. Two short paragraphs are added at

Asymptotic normalization coefficient of ^{8}B from breakup reactions and the S_{17} astrophysical factor
We show that asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) can be extracted
from one nucleon breakup reactions of loosely bound nuclei at 30-300 MeV/u. In
particular, the breakup of ^{8}B is described in terms of an extended Glauber
model. The 8B ANC extracted for the ground state of this nucleus from breakup
data at several energies and on different targets, C^2 = 0.450+/-0.039} fm^-1,
leads to the astrophysical factor S_{17}(0)= 17.4+/-1.5 eVb for the key
reaction for solar neutrino production 7Be(p,gamma)8B. The procedure described
here is more general, providing an indirect method to determine reaction rates
of astrophysical interest with beams of loosely bound radioactive nuclei.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 3 figures revised version to appear in Phys Rev Let
Signals for a Transition from Surface to Bulk Emission in Thermal Multifragmentation
Excitation-energy-gated two-fragment correlation functions have been studied
between 2 to 9A MeV of excitation energy for equilibrium-like sources formed in
and p + Au reactions at beam momenta of 8,9.2 and 10.2 GeV/c.
Comparison of the data to an N-body Coulomb-trajectory code shows a decrease of
one order of magnitude in the fragment emission time in the excitation energy
interval 2-5A MeV, followed by a nearly constant breakup time at higher
excitation energy. The observed decrease in emission time is shown to be
strongly correlated with the increase of the fragment emission probability, and
the onset of thermally-induced radial expansion. This result is interpreted as
evidence consistent with a transition from surface-dominated to bulk emission
expected for spinodal decomposition.Comment: 11 pages including 3 postscript figures (1 color
Reverse glacier motion during iceberg calving and the cause of glacial earthquakes
Nearly half of Greenland’s mass loss occurs through iceberg calving, but the physical mechanisms operating during calving are poorly known and in situ observations are sparse. We show that calving at Greenland’s Helheim Glacier causes a minutes-long reversal of the glacier’s horizontal flow and a downward deflection of its terminus. The reverse motion results from the horizontal force caused by iceberg capsize and acceleration away from the glacier front. The downward motion results from a hydrodynamic pressure drop behind the capsizing berg, which also causes an upward force on the solid Earth. These forces are the source of glacial earthquakes, globally detectable seismic events whose proper interpretation will allow remote sensing of calving processes occurring at increasing numbers of outlet glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica
Microscopic calculations of medium effects for 200-MeV (p,p') reactions
We examine the quality of a G-matrix calculation of the effective
nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction for the prediction of the cross section and
analyzing power for 200-MeV (p,p') reactions that populate natural parity
states in O, Si, and Ca. This calculation is based on a
one-boson-exchange model of the free NN force that reproduces NN observables
well. The G-matrix includes the effects of Pauli blocking, nuclear binding, and
strong relativistic mean-field potentials. The implications of adjustments to
the effective mass ansatz to improve the quality of the approximation at
momenta above the Fermi level will be discussed, along with the general quality
of agreement to a variety of (p,p') transitions.Comment: 36 pages, TeX, 18 figure
Optical model potentials involving loosely bound p-shell nuclei around 10 MeV/A
We present the results of a search for optical model potentials for use in
the description of elastic scattering and transfer reactions involving stable
and radioactive p-shell nuclei. This was done in connection with our program to
use transfer reactions to obtain data for nuclear astrophysics, in particular
for the determination of the astrophysical S_17 factor for 7Be(p,\gamma)8B
using two (7Be,8B) proton transfer reactions. Elastic scattering was measured
using 7Li, 10B, 13C and 14N projectiles on 9Be and 13C targets at or about
E/A=10 MeV/nucleon. Woods-Saxon type optical model potentials were extracted
and are compared with potentials obtained from a microscopic double folding
model. We use these results to find optical model potentials for unstable
nuclei with emphasis on the reliability of the description they provide for
peripheral proton transfer reactions. We discuss the uncertainty introduced by
the procedure in the prediction of the DWBA cross sections for the (7Be,8B)
reactions used in extracting the astrophysical factor S_17(0).Comment: 16 pages, LaTEX file, 9 figures (PostScript files
