    On Quillen's calculation of graded KK-theory

    We adapt Quillen's calculation of graded K-groups of Z-graded rings with support in N to graded K-theory, allowing gradings in a product Z \times G with G an arbitrary group. This in turn allows us to use inductions and calculate graded K-theory of Z^m-graded rings. Here Z is the ring of integers and N positive natural numbers

    This article reviews three development proposals in Northern Manhattan communities, how community boards responded to those proposals, and how the responses affected the outcome of each development. The article begins with a broad overview of the history of community boards\u27 role in urban planning in New York City. It finds that boards have become increasingly influential in new development plans, empowering the communities they represent. The Article goes on to analyze three recent proposals in turn (an expansion of Columbia University in Morningside Heights, a residential development in Central Harlem, and a comprehensive rezoning of East Harlem) according to zoning, community reaction, and result. It concludes that by proactively pushing for rezoning and hiring Civitas Citizens, Inc., an urban design, community advocacy organization to oversee a rezoning plan, the community board of East Harlem was able to take control of preserving the character of its neighborhood

    We perform an event-by-event analysis of the transverse momentum distribution of final state particles in central Pb(160AGeV)+Pb collisions within a microscopic non-equilibrium transport model (UrQMD). Strong influence of rescattering is found. The extracted momentum distributions show less fluctuations in A+A collisions than in p+p reactions.     Azimuthal correlations of pions in relativistic heavy ion collisions at 1 GeV/nucl.

    Triple differential cross sections of pions in heavy ion collisions at 1 GeV/nucl. are studied with the IQMD model. After discussing general properties of Δ\Delta resonance and pion production we focus on azimuthal correlations: At projectile- and target-rapidities we observe an anticorrelation in the in-plane transverse momentum between pions and protons. At c.m.-rapidity, however, we find that high ptp_t pions are being preferentially emitted perpendicular to the event-plane.     A gas flow indicator for portable life support systems

    A three-part program was conducted to develop a gas flow indicator (GFI) to monitor ventilation flow in a portable life support system. The first program phase identified concepts which could potentially meet the GFI requirements. In the second phase, a working breadboard GFI, based on the concept of a pressure sensing diaphragm-aneroid assembly connected to a venturi, was constructed and tested. Extensive testing of the breadboard GFI indicated that the design would meet all NASA requirements including eliminating problems experienced with the ventilation flow sensor used in the Apollo program. In the third program phase, an optimized GFI was designed by utilizing test data obtained on the breadboard unit. A prototype unit was constructed using prototype materials and fabrication techniques, and performance tests indicated that the prototype GFI met or exceeded all requirements

    Effect of geometrical size of the particles in a hot and dense hadron gas

    Incorporation of the finite size of baryons into the equation of state (EOS) of a hot and dense hadron gas (HG) in a thermodynamically consistent manner has been a much studied problem. We first review its current status. Various models have been proposed in order to account for the repulsive force generated by the hard-core geometrical size of the baryons resulting in an excluded volume effect in the EOS. We examine the criterion of the thermodynamical consistency of these models and summarize their shortcomings. In order to remove the shortcomings, we propose a new model which incorporates the excluded volume effect in a thermodynamically consistent manner. We find that the new model works even for the cases of extremely large temperatures and densities where most of other approaches fail. Furthermore, the new expressions for thermodynamical variables resemble in form with those obtained from thermodynamically inconsistent models and thus a useful correction factor has been suggested here which converts inconsistent expressions into thermodynamically consistent ones. Finally we compare the predictions of new model with those obtained from various old models.Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
