To let hair be, or to not let hair be? Gender and body hair removal practices in Aotearoa/New Zealand
Research and anecdotal evidence suggest women continue to remove body hair, and there is some evidence for cultural changes in men’s hair removal practices. This paper reports on data collected using an online mix-methods survey from 584 New Zealanders between the ages of 18-35 (mean age 26, 48.9% male, 50.6% female). The data demonstrated that substantial proportions of both women and men in Aotearoa/New Zealand remove body hair from many sites. However, gendered differences remain, and a key dimension of gendered difference appears in the concept of flexible choice around body hair removal or retention. This was seen in the difference between perceived acceptability of having body hair (81% for men, 11% for women). These findings suggest that although men, like women, are now coming under some pressure to remove body hair, there is still a great difference in men and women’s capacity to choose whether to bow to it

Emotional Labor in Mathematics: Reflections on Mathematical Communities, Mentoring Structures, and EDGE
Terms such as "affective labor" and "emotional labor" pepper feminist
critiques of the workplace. Though there are theoretical nuances between the
two phrases, both kinds of labor involve the management of emotions; some acts
associated with these constructs involve caring, listening, comforting,
reassuring, and smiling. In this article I explore the different ways academic
mathematicians are called to provide emotional labor in the discipline, thereby
illuminating a rarely visible component of a mathematical life in the academy.
Underlying this work is my contention that a conceptualization of labor
involved in managing emotions is of value to the project of understanding the
character, values, and boundaries of such a life. In order to investigate the
various dimensions of emotional labor in the context of academic mathematics, I
extend the basic framework of Morris and Feldman [33] and then apply this
extended framework to the mathematical sciences. Other researchers have mainly
focused on the negative effects of emotional labor on a laborer's physical,
emotional, and mental health, and several examples in this article align with
this framing. However, at the end of the article, I argue that mathematical
communities and mentoring structures such as EDGE help diminish some of the
negative aspects of emotional labor while also accentuating the positives.Comment: Revised version to appear in the upcoming volume A Celebration of

Visible lesbians and invisible bisexuals: Appearance and visual identities among bisexual women
A number of feminist scholars have argued that dress and appearance can be used to critique the dominant culture and explore alternative subjectivities. Research on non-heterosexual visual identities has explored the role that appearance and clothing practices can play in the construction of individual identities and collective communities. However, bisexual women are largely invisible in these discussions. The minimal existing research suggests that bisexual women are unable to communicate their sexuality through their clothing and appearance. This study explored how bisexual women manage their bodies and appearance in relation to their bisexuality. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 self-identified bisexual women and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The participants reported particular visual aesthetics associated with an embodied lesbian identity; however, they reported no visual image of bisexual women. Nonetheless, despite their lack of access to a distinct visual identity, the women negotiated ways in which to incorporate their bisexual identity into their dress and appearance, and considered their bisexuality an important aspect of their identity, which they would like to be recognised and acknowledged
