Non-Fermi liquid behavior in transport through Co doped Au chains

    Get PDF
We calculate the conductance as a function of temperature G(T)G(T) through Au monoatomic chains containing one Co atom as a magnetic impurity, and connected to two conducting leads with a 4-fold symmetry axis. Using the information derived from {\it ab initio} calculations, we construct an effective model \Heff that hybridizes a 3d7^7 quadruplet at the Co site with two 3d8^8 triplets through the hopping of 5dxz_{xz} and 5dyz_{yz} electrons of Au. The quadruplet is split by spin anisotropy due to spin-orbit coupling. Solving \Heff with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) % Wb: reverted my own change we find that at low temperatures G(T)=a−bTG(T)=a-b \sqrt{T} and the ground state impurity entropy is ln⁡(2)/2\ln(2)/2, a behavior similar to the two-channel Kondo model. Stretching the chain leads to a non Kondo phase, with the physics of the underscreened Kondo model at the quantum critical point.Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Letter

Fair and consistent prize allocation in competitions

Given the final ranking of a competition, how should the total prize endowment be allocated among the competitors? We study consistent prize allocation rules satisfying elementary solidarity and fairness principles. In particular, we axiomatically characterize two families of rules satisfying anonymity, order preservation, and endowment monotonicity, which all fall between the Equal Division rule and the Winner-Takes-All rule. Specific characterizations of rules and subfamilies are directly obtained.Comment: 34 page

Unusual Kondo physics in a Co impurity atom embedded in noble-metal chains

    Get PDF
We analyze the conduction bands of the one dimensional noble-metal chains that contain a Co magnetic impurity by means of ab initio calculations. We compare the results obtained for Cu and Ag pure chains, as well as O doped Cu, Ag and Au chains with those previously found for Au pure chains. We find similar results in the case of Cu and Au hosts, whereas for Ag chains a different behavior is obtained. Differences and similarities among the different systems are analyzed by comparing the electronic structure of the three noble-metal hosts. The d-orbitals of Cu chains at the Fermi level have the same symmetry as in the case of Au chains. These orbitals hybridize with the corresponding ones of the Co impurity, giving rise to the possibility of exhibiting a two-channel Kondo physics.Comment: Accepted in IEEE Trans. Magn. - April 201

Inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia caused by a dentigerous cyst associated with three teeth

The dentigerous cyst is a common pathologic entity associated with an impacted tooth, usually third molars. They generally are asymptomatic, being found on routine dental radiographic examination. This report describes the case of a 43 year old male with a large dentigerous cyst associated with mandibular canine, first and second premolar teeth that caused paresthesia of the inferior alveolar nerve

Cuidando el proceso lector desde las bibliotecas

Libraries are spaces for reflecting, learning, living together, educating… thanks to reading. Reading is the centre of the library and must be promoted with care, even before birth, because it is an indispensable tool for personal development. The process of reading must be studied and followed step by step respecting the idiosincrasy and freedom of each reader. Each library should build its “own philosophy”, which all the team members must interiorize and do their own. Thus, the staff will work in a coherent way —being and not simply doing— to create a space for socio-educational intervention, an educative library; creating a library-school-family tandem, so they cycle togue-ther towards reading, actualizing and supporting the transit from orality towards literature.

Dft And X-ray Study Of Structural, Electronic, Elastic And Optical Properties In Be1–xznxs Alloys Depending On Vegard’s Law

    Get PDF
Structural, optical and electronic properties and elastic constants of Be1–xZnxS alloys have been studied by employing the commercial code Castep based on density functional theory. The generalized gradient approximation and local density approximation were utilized as exchange correlation. Using elastic constants for compounds, bulk modulus, band gap, Fermi energy and Kramers–Kronig relations, dielectric constants and the refractive index have been found through calculations. Apart from these, X-ray measurements revealed elastic constants and Vegard’s law. It is seen that results obtained from theory and experiments are all in agreement

Identification of High Nature Value Farmland in France through Statistical Information and Farm Practices Surveys

    Get PDF
The Concept of High Nature Value (HNV) farmland has been evolving over the last fifteen years in Europe. In the European Union this has been closely linked to the aim of integrating environmental concerns in the Common Agricultural Policy. The idea that nature values, environmental qualities, even cultural heritage are linked to or dependent on farming, also underlies and supports the concept of a multifunctional 'European model of farming' which provides benefits other than food. The 'High Nature Value farming' idea thus ties the preservation of biodiversity and wildlife value of the countryside to the need to safeguard the continuation of farming in certain areas with maintenance of specific farming systems associated to the long-term management of these areas. The work presented in the report aims at better identifying and characterising HNV farmland at national level (France) with a farm system approach based on FSS statistical data and specific national surveys, taking into account the whole farm with the total agricultural area and its characteristics. In a first step relevant variables have been selected to calculate the “crop diversity” indicator at NUTS 5. In a second step the crop diversity indicator has been combined overlaid with other data sets from other surveys (“Grassland” Survey and “Forestry” Survey) to build “the landscape elements” and “the extensive crops and grasslands” indicators. In a third step these three indicators have been weighted to calculate a final score and draw maps at municipality scale (NUTS 5).JRC.H.5-Rural, water and ecosystem resource

A Systematic Review of Studies Comparing the Measurement Properties of the Three-Level and Five-Level Versions of the EQ-5D

    Get PDF
Background: Since the introduction of the five-level version of the EQ-5D (5L), many studies have comparatively investigated the measurement properties of the original three-level version (3L) with the 5L version. Objective: The aim of this study was to consolidate the available evidence on the performance of both instruments. Methods: A systematic literature search of studies in the English and German languages was conducted (2007–January 2018) using the PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO (EBSCO) databases, as well as the EuroQol Research Foundation website. Data were extracted and assessed on missing values, distributional properties, informativity indices (Shannon’s H′ and J′), inconsistencies, responsiveness, and test–retest reliability. Results: Twenty-four studies were included in the review. Missing values and floor effects (percentage reporting the worst health state) were found to be negligible for both 3L and 5L (< 5%). From 18 studies, inconsistencies ranged from 0 to 10.6%, although they were generally well below 5%, with 9 studies reporting the most inconsistencies for Usual Activities (mean percentage 4.1%). Shannon’s indices were always higher for 5L than for 3L, and all but three studies reported lower ceiling effects (‘11111’) for 5L than for 3L. There is mixed and insufficient evidence on responsiveness and test–retest reliability, although results on index values showed better performance for 5L on test–retest reliability. Conclusion: Overall, studies showed similar or better measurement properties of the 5L compared with the 3L, and evidence indicated moderately better distributional parameters and substantial improvement in informativity for the 5L compared with the 3L. Insufficient evidence on responsiveness and test–retest reliability implies further research is needed
