    Comparison of direct and indirect methods to maximise the detection of Babesia caballi and Theileria equi infections in Central Southern Italy

    : Equine piroplasmosis is a disease of equids, caused by tick-borne apicomplexan protozoan pathogens Babesia caballi and Theileria equi, which, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), can be diagnosed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The present study was conducted to evaluate and compare the assays available for the diagnosis of equine piroplasmosis. Data employed were obtained from 1300 blood samples collected between 2012-2014 from asymptomatic and symptomatic equines (horses and donkeys) of central-southern regions of Italy and analyzed by ELISA, IFAT, PCR (one commercial and one from literature) and blood smear microscopic examination. Statistical differences of the proportions of positivity for each parasite and group (asymptomatic and symptomatic) among the methods were verified by the z test to identify the most sensitive. The concordance between each pair of methods - for each parasite and within the groups - and trends in detection of suspect samples of four hypothetical diagnostic algorithms using serological and biomolecular assays were evaluated to identify the most suitable laboratory diagnostic workflow. The results of this study highlighted a lower capacity to detect suspect samples of commercial ELISA for B. caballi in all groups when compared to biomolecular methods and IFAT; and of the commercial PCRs in asymptomatic animals, identifying a PCR from literature and IFAT as the best choice for a combined diagnosis. For T. equi, IFAT detected more suspect samples than ELISA, even if the latter showed good performance and some samples were positive only by the ELISA and PCR, indicating that their simultaneous employment is still advantageous. Host-parasite interaction, amino-acid/genetic diversity and differences in detection limits among the assays could be among the reasons in explaining the present results. In view of further studies, ELISA should be used in combination with PCR, that should regularly be included in the laboratory diagnosis to maximise the detection of early infections and support the evaluation of pharmacological treatment

    Regressive Event-Tracker: A Causal Prediction Modelling of Degradation in High Speed Manufacturing

    The proposed work describes a dynamic regression based event-tracker for high speed production process. The methodology discussed is a causal system and provides trends and estimations of the sensors based on a flexible regression model of the historical sensor values. A safety threshold is defined that provides a boundary of the tolerant working for the regime condition of production. This threshold is used as a reference to calculate the remaining useful life of the critical component. The estimated remaining useful life is compared with the Weibull reliability analysis. The proposed methodology provides a remaining useful life of ∼ 10 weeks for the thermal regulator use-case when compared to ∼ 9 weeks for Weibull analysis. The overestimation of the methodology is discussed and along with the alternative methodology.     Microclimate–forage growth linkages across two strongly contrasting precipitation years in a Mediterranean catchment

    Given the complex topography of California rangelands, contrasting microclimates affect forage growth at catchment scales. However, documentation of microclimate–forage growth associations is limited, especially in Mediterranean regions experiencing pronounced climate change impacts. To better understand microclimate–forage growth linkages, we monitored forage productivity and root-zone soil temperature and moisture (0–15 and 15–30 cm) in 16 topographic positions in a 10-ha annual grassland catchment in California's Central Coast Range. Data were collected through two strongly contrasting growing seasons, a wet year (2016–17) with 287-mm precipitation and a dry year (2017–18) with 123-mm precipitation. Plant-available soil water storage (0–30 cm) was more than half full for most of the wet year; mean peak standing forage was 2790 kg ha−1 (range: 1597–4570 kg ha−1). The dry year had restricted plant-available water and mean peak standing forage was reduced to 970 kg ha−1 (range: 462–1496 kg ha−1). In the wet year, forage growth appeared energy limited (light and temperature): warmer sites produced more forage across a 3–4°C soil temperature gradient but late season growth was associated with moister sites spanning this energy gradient. In the dry year, the warmest topographic positions produced limited forage across a 10°C soil temperature gradient until late season rainfall in March. Linear models accounting for interactions between soil moisture and temperature explained about half of rapid, springtime forage growth variance. These findings reveal dynamic but clear microclimate–forage growth linkages in complex terrain, and thus, have implications for rangeland drought monitoring and dryland ecosystems modeling under climate change

    Interaction Modalities Used on Serious Games for Upper Limb Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review

    This systematic review aims to analyze the state-of-the-art regarding interaction modalities used on serious games for upper limb rehabilitation. A systematic search was performed in IEEE Xplore and Web of Science databases. PRISMA and QualSyst protocols were used to filter and assess the articles. Articles must meet the following inclusion criteria: they must be written in English; be at least four pages in length; use or develop serious games; focus on upper limb rehabilitation; and be published between 2007 and 2017. Of 121 articles initially retrieved, 33 articles met the inclusion criteria. Three interaction modalities were found: vision systems (42.4%), complementary vision systems (30.3%), and no-vision systems (27.2%). Vision systems and no-vision systems obtained a similar mean QualSyst (86%) followed by complementary vision systems (85.7%). Almost half of the studies used vision systems as the interaction modality (42.4%) and used the Kinect sensor to collect the body movements (48.48%). The shoulder was the most treated body part in the studies (19%). A key limitation of vision systems and complementary vision systems is that their device performances might be affected by lighting conditions. A main limitation of the no-vision systems is that the range-of-motion in angles of the body movement might not be measured accurately. Due to a limited number of studies, fruitful areas for further research could be the following: serious games focused on finger rehabilitation and trauma injuries, game difficulty adaptation based on user's muscle strength and posture, and multisensor data fusion on interaction modalities

    A precise measurement of the Dalitz plot parameter, alpha, for the eta->3pi^0 decay is presented. The experiment was performed with the Crystal Ball and TAPS large acceptance photon detectors at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI-B electron accelerator in Mainz.     Strike-slip faults mediate the rise of crustal-derived fluids and mud volcanism in the deep sea

    We report on newly discovered mud volcanoes located at ∼4500 m water depth ∼90 km west of the deformation front of the accretionary wedge of the Gulf of Cadiz, and thus outside of their typical geotectonic environment. Seismic data suggest that fluid flow is mediated by a >400-km-long strike-slip fault marking the transcurrent plate boundary between Africa and Eurasia. Geochemical data (Cl, B, Sr, 87Sr/86Sr, δ18O, δD) reveal that fluids originate in oceanic crust older than 140 Ma. On their rise to the surface, these fluids receive strong geochemical signals from recrystallization of Upper Jurassic carbonates and clay-mineral dehydration in younger terrigeneous units. At present, reports of mud volcanoes in similar deep-sea settings are rare, but given that the large area of transform-type plate boundaries has been barely investigated, such pathways of fluid discharge may provide an important, yet unappreciated link between the deeply buried oceanic crust and the deep ocean

    K+ΛK^+\Lambda and K+Σ0K^+\Sigma^0 photoproduction with fine center-of-mass energy resolution

    Measurements of γp→K+Λ\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+} \Lambda and γp→K+Σ0\gamma p \rightarrow K^{+} \Sigma^0 cross-sections have been obtained with the photon tagging facility and the Crystal Ball calorimeter at MAMI-C. The measurement uses a novel K+K^+ meson identification technique in which the weak decay products are characterized using the energy and timing characteristics of the energy deposit in the calorimeter, a method that has the potential to be applied at many other facilities. The fine center-of-mass energy (WW) resolution and statistical accuracy of the new data results in a significant impact on partial wave analyses aiming to better establish the excitation spectrum of the nucleon. The new analyses disfavor a strong role for quark-diquark dynamics in the nucleon.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

    Photoproduction of π0\pi^0-pairs off protons and off neutrons

    Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of π0π0\pi^0\pi^0 pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508 and 1557~MeV, which produced bremsstrahlung in thin radiator foils. The tagged photon beam covered energies up to 1400~MeV. The data from the free proton target are in good agreement with previous measurements and were only used to test the analysis procedures. The results for differential cross sections (angular distributions and invariant-mass distributions) for free and quasi-free protons are almost identical in shape, but differ in absolute magnitude up to 15\%. Thus, moderate final-state interaction effects are present. The data for quasi-free neutrons are similar to the proton data in the second resonance region (final state invariant masses up to ≈\approx1550~MeV), where both reactions are dominated by the N(1520)3/2−→Δ(1232)3/2+πN(1520)3/2^-\rightarrow \Delta(1232)3/2^+\pi decay. At higher energies, angular and invariant-mass distributions are different. A simple analysis of the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions in the third resonance region is consistent with strong contributions of an N⋆→NσN^{\star}\rightarrow N\sigma decay for the proton, while the reaction is dominated by a sequential decay via a Δπ\Delta\pi intermediate state for the neutron. The data are compared to predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID model and the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel analysis.Comment: accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.

    Measurement of the beam-helicity asymmetry I⊙I^{\odot} in the photoproduction of π0π±\pi^0\pi^{\pm}-pairs off protons and off neutrons

    Beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz for the photoproduction of mixed-charge pion pairs in the reactions γp→nπ0π+\boldsymbol{\gamma}p\rightarrow n\pi^0\pi^+ off free protons and γd→(p)pπ0π−\boldsymbol{\gamma}d\rightarrow (p)p\pi^0\pi^- and γd→(n)nπ0π+\boldsymbol{\gamma}d\rightarrow (n)n\pi^0\pi^+ off quasi-free nucleons bound in the deuteron for incident photon energies up to 1.4 GeV. Circularly polarized photons were produced from bremsstrahlung of longitudinally polarized electrons and tagged with the Glasgow-Mainz magnetic spectrometer. The charged pions, recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and decay photons from π0\pi^0 mesons were detected in the 4π\pi electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. Using a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state, excellent agreement was found between the results for free and quasi-free protons, suggesting that the quasi-free neutron results are also a close approximation of the free-neutron asymmetries. A comparison of the results to the predictions of the Two-Pion-MAID reaction model shows that the reaction mechanisms are still not well understood, in particular at low incident photon energies in the second nucleon-resonance region.Comment: accepted for publication in Eur. phys.
