    Interplay Between Fullerene Surface Coverage and Contact Selectivity of Cathode Interfaces in Organic Solar Cells

    Interfaces play a determining role in establishing the degree of carrier selectivity at outer contacts in organic solar cells. Considering that the bulk heterojunction consists of a blend of electron donor and acceptor materials, the specific relative surface coverage at the electrode interfaces have an impact on the carrier selectivity. This work unravels how fullerene surface coverage at cathode contacts lies behind the carrier selectivity of the electrodes. A variety of techniques as variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry and capacitance-voltage measurements have been used to determine the degree of fullerene surface coverage in a set of PCPDTBT-based solar cells processed with different additives. A full screening from highly fullerene-rich to polymer-rich phases attaching the cathode interface has enabled the overall correlation between surface morphology (relative coverage) and device performance (operating parameters). The general validity of the measurements is further discussed in four donor/acceptor systems: PCPDTBT, P3HT, PCDTBT and PTB7 blended with fullerene derivatives. It is demonstrated that a fullerene rich interface at the cathode is a prerequisite to enhance contact selectivity, and consequently power conversion efficiency

    En este trabajo describimos un proyecto de innovación consistente en el diseño de un material didáctico hipermedia (distribuido en CD-ROM) que permite el auto-aprendizaje de un programa de facturación. Con ello tratamos de dar solución a dos problemas que venimos encontrándonos a la hora de impartir su docencia: a) escasez de tiempo para impartirlo (un programa informático relativamente complejo) y b) la falta de flexibilidad que caracteriza habitualmente a los manuales de ayuda de este tipo de programas. Este proyecto se incluye, además, en otro de mayor alcance en el que tratamos de evaluar la eficacia y eficiencia de la metodología utilizada.This paper describes a project concerning the design of a CD-ROM based hypermedia tutorial for the self-learning of a standard invoicing package. The hypermedia tool tries to overcome some of the most important teaching problems in this subject, such as the lack of time in our usual lectures (given the complexity of the invoicing package) or the lack of flexibility in the traditional handbooks and instruction manuals. This project is included in a wider research in which we try to assess both efficacy and efficiency of the hypermedia tutorial

    Real space demonstration of induced crystalline 3D nanostructuration of organic layers

A tip-assisted method using atomic force microscopy (AFM) is developed for removing part of the organic material and relocating it in up to six layer thick nanostructures. Moreover, unconventional molecular scale imaging combining diverse friction force microscopy modes reveals the stacking sequence of the piled layers. In particular, we unambiguously achieve epitaxial growth, an issue of fundamental importance in thin film strategies for the nanostructuration of more efficient organic nanodevices

    Synergistic Effect of Solvent Vapor Annealing and Chemical Doping for Achieving High-Performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors with Ideal Electrical Characteristics

    Contact resistance and charge trapping are two key obstacles, often intertwined, that negatively impact on the performance of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) by reducing the overall device mobility and provoking a nonideal behavior. Here, we expose organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films based on blends of 2,7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C8-BTBT-C8) with polystyrene (PS) to (i) a CH3CN vapor annealing process, (ii) a doping I2/water procedure, and (iii) vapors of I2/CH3CN to simultaneously dope and anneal the films. After careful analysis of the OFET electrical characteristics and by performing local Kelvin probe force microscopy studies, we found that the vapor annealing process predominantly reduces interfacial shallow traps, while the chemical doping of the OSC film is responsible for the diminishment of deeper traps and promoting a significant reduction of the contact resistance. Remarkably, the devices treated with I2/CH3CN reveal ideal electrical characteristics with a low level of shallow/deep traps and a very high and almost gate-independent mobility. Hence, this work demonstrates the promising synergistic effects of performing simultaneously a solvent vapor annealing and doping procedure, which can lead to trap-free OSC films with negligible contact resistance problems

    Influence of the relative molecular orientation on interfacial charge-transfer Excitons at donor/acceptor Nanoscale heterojunctions

    We address the impact of the relative orientation between donor (D) and acceptor (A) molecules at the D/A heterojunction on the exciton dissociation. For this purpose, two-dimensional heterojunctions of diindenoperylene (DIP) and N,N'-dioctyl-3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylicdiimide (PTCDI-C) deposited onto SiO/Si are grown, which exemplify two model interfaces with the π-staking direction either perpendicular or parallel to the interface. Aspects related to the morphology of the heterojunctions and charge photogeneration are studied by scanning probe force methods and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Results from PL spectroscopy indicate that the exciton dissociation is influenced by the different relative molecular orientations of A and D. For the configuration with stronger orbital overlap between A and D at the interface, the exciton dissociation is dominated by recombination from an interfacial charge-transfer state. © 2014 American Chemical Society

    Monodentate versus Bidentate Anchoring Groups in Self-Assembling Molecules (SAMs) for Robust p-i-n Perovskite Solar Cells

    Current improvement in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been achieved by interface engineering and fine-tuning of charge-selective contacts. In this work, we report three novel molecules that can form self-assembled layers (SAMs) as an alternative to the most commonly used p-type contact material, PTAA. Two of these molecules have bidentate anchoring groups (MC-54 and MC-55), while the last one is monodentate (MC-45). Besides the PTAA comparison, we also compared those two types of molecules and their effect on the solar cell's performance. Devices fabricated with MC-54 and MC-55 showed a remarkable field factor (about 80%) and a better current density, leading to higher efficient solar cells in comparison to MC-45 and PTAA.     Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in avocado farmworkers from Mexico

    IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected farmworkers in the United States and Europe, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. However, little is known about the specific impact of the pandemic on agriculture and food production workers in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and assess the mental health and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic among avocado farmworkers in Michoacan, Mexico.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study of adult farmworkers (n = 395) in May 2021. We collected survey data, nasal swabs and saliva samples for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection, and blood samples for immunoglobulin G (IgG) reactivity measurements.ResultsNone of the farmworkers tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA. However, among unvaccinated farmworkers (n = 336, 85%), approximately one-third (33%) showed evidence of past infection (positive for IgG against SARS-CoV-2). Unvaccinated farmworkers who lived with other farmworkers (aRR = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.05, 2.05), had ever lived with someone with COVID-19 (aRR = 1.82; 95% CI: 1.22, 2.43), and who had diabetes (aRR = 2.19; 95% CI: 1.53, 2.85) had a higher risk of testing IgG-positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection. In contrast, unvaccinated farmworkers living in more rural areas (outside of Tingambato or Uruapan) (aRR = 0.71; 95% CI: 0.46, 0.96) or cooking with wood-burning stove (aRR = 0.75; 95% CI: 0.55, 0.96) had a lower risk of IgG-positivity. Moreover, 66% of farmworkers reported a negative impact of the pandemic on their lives, 29% reported experiencing food insecurity and difficulty paying bills, and 10% reported depression or anxiety symptoms.ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the mental health and financial well-being of avocado farmworkers. Consequently, the implementation of interventions and prevention efforts, such as providing mental health support and food assistance services, is imperative

    Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Regeneration Profile in Treated B-Cell Precursor Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Patients:Association with MRD Status and Patient Outcome

    SIMPLE SUMMARY: For the last 20 years, measurable residual disease (MRD) has proven to be a strong prognostic factor in B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). However, the effects of therapy on the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment and their potential relationship with MRD and patient outcome still remain to be evaluated. Here, we show that mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and endothelial cells (EC) are constantly present at relatively low frequencies in normal BM and in most follow-up BM samples from treated BCP-ALL patients. Of note, their levels are independent of the MRD status. From the prognostic point of view, an increased percentage of EC among stromal cells (EC plus MSC) at day +78 of therapy was associated with shorter disease free survival (DFS), independently of the MRD status both in childhood and in adult BCP-ALL. Thus, an abnormally high EC/MSC distribution at day +78 of therapy emerges as an adverse prognostic factor, independent of MRD in BCP-ALL. ABSTRACT: For the last two decades, measurable residual disease (MRD) has become one of the most powerful independent prognostic factors in B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL). However, the effect of therapy on the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment and its potential relationship with the MRD status and disease free survival (DFS) still remain to be investigated. Here we analyzed the distribution of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and endothelial cells (EC) in the BM of treated BCP-ALL patients, and its relationship with the BM MRD status and patient outcome. For this purpose, the BM MRD status and EC/MSC regeneration profile were analyzed by multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) in 16 control BM (10 children; 6 adults) and 1204 BM samples from 347 children and 100 adult BCP-ALL patients studied at diagnosis (129 children; 100 adults) and follow-up (824 childhood samples; 151 adult samples). Patients were grouped into a discovery cohort (116 pediatric BCP-ALL patients; 338 samples) and two validation cohorts (74 pediatric BCP-ALL, 211 samples; and 74 adult BCP-ALL patients; 134 samples). Stromal cells (i.e., EC and MSC) were detected at relatively low frequencies in all control BM (16/16; 100%) and in most BCP-ALL follow-up samples (874/975; 90%), while they were undetected in BCP-ALL BM at diagnosis. In control BM samples, the overall percentage of EC plus MSC was higher in children than adults (p = 0.011), but with a similar EC/MSC ratio in both groups. According to the MRD status similar frequencies of both types of BM stromal cells were detected in BCP-ALL BM studied at different time points during the follow-up. Univariate analysis (including all relevant prognostic factors together with the percentage of stromal cells) performed in the discovery cohort was used to select covariates for a multivariate Cox regression model for predicting patient DFS. Of note, an increased percentage of EC (>32%) within the BCP-ALL BM stromal cell compartment at day +78 of therapy emerged as an independent unfavorable prognostic factor for DFS in childhood BCP-ALL in the discovery cohort—hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of 2.50 (1–9.66); p = 0.05—together with the BM MRD status (p = 0.031). Further investigation of the predictive value of the combination of these two variables (%EC within stromal cells and MRD status at day +78) allowed classification of BCP-ALL into three risk groups with median DFS of: 3.9, 3.1 and 1.1 years, respectively (p = 0.001). These results were confirmed in two validation cohorts of childhood BCP-ALL (n = 74) (p = 0.001) and adult BCP-ALL (n = 40) (p = 0.004) treated at different centers. In summary, our findings suggest that an imbalanced EC/MSC ratio in BM at day +78 of therapy is associated with a shorter DFS of BCP-ALL patients, independently of their MRD status. Further prospective studies are needed to better understand the pathogenic mechanisms involved
