A Gyrochronology and Microvariability Survey of the Milky Way's Older Stars Using Kepler's Two-Wheels Program
Even with the diminished precision possible with only two reaction wheels,
the Kepler spacecraft can obtain mmag level, time-resolved photometry of tens
of thousands of sources. The presence of such a rich, large data set could be
transformative for stellar astronomy. In this white paper, we discuss how
rotation periods for a large ensemble of single and binary main- sequence
dwarfs can yield a quantitative understanding of the evolution of stellar
spin-down over time. This will allow us to calibrate rotation-based ages beyond
~1 Gyr, which is the oldest benchmark that exists today apart from the Sun.
Measurement of rotation periods of M dwarfs past the fully-convective boundary
will enable extension of gyrochronology to the end of the stellar
main-sequence, yielding precise ages ({\sigma} ~10%) for the vast majority of
nearby stars. It will also help set constraints on the angular momentum
evolution and magnetic field generation in these stars. Our Kepler-based study
would be supported by a suite of ongoing and future ground-based observations.
Finally, we briefly discuss two ancillary science cases, detection of
long-period low-mass eclipsing binaries and microvariability in white dwarfs
and hot subdwarf B stars that the Kepler Two-Wheels Program would facilitate.Comment: Kepler white pape
Miniature exoplanet radial velocity array I: design, commissioning, and early photometric results
The MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA) is a US-based observational facility dedicated to the discovery and characterization of exoplanets around a nearby sample of bright stars. MINERVA employs a robotic array of four 0.7 m telescopes outfitted for both high-resolution spec- troscopy and photometry, and is designed for completely autonomous operation. The primary science program is a dedicated radial velocity survey and the secondary science objective is to obtain high precision transit light curves. The modular design of the facility and the flexibility of our hardware allows for both science programs to be pursued simultaneously, while the robotic control software provides a robust and efficient means to carry out nightly observations. In this article, we describe the design of MINERVA including major hardware components, software, and science goals. The telescopes and photometry cameras are characterized at our test facility on the Caltech campus in Pasadena, CA, and their on-sky performance is validated. New observations from our test facility demonstrate sub-mmag photometric precision of one of our radial velocity survey targets, and we present new transit observations and fits of WASP-52b—a known hot-Jupiter with an inflated radius and misaligned orbit. The process of relocating the MINERVA hardware to its final destination at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona has begun, and science operations are expected to commence within 2015
Characterizing the Cool KOIs II. The M Dwarf KOI-254 and its Hot Jupiter
We report the confirmation and characterization of a transiting gas giant
planet orbiting the M dwarf KOI-254 every 2.455239 days, which was originally
discovered by the Kepler mission. We use radial velocity measurements, adaptive
optics imaging and near infrared spectroscopy to confirm the planetary nature
of the transit events. KOI-254b is the first hot Jupiter discovered around an
M-type dwarf star. We also present a new model-independent method of using
broadband photometry to estimate the mass and metallicity of an M dwarf without
relying on a direct distance measurement. Included in this methodology is a new
photometric metallicity calibration based on J-K colors. We use this technique
to measure the physical properties of KOI-254 and its planet. We measure a
planet mass of Mp = 0.505 Mjup, radius Rp = 0.96 Rjup and semimajor axis a =
0.03 AU, based on our measured stellar mass Mstar = 0.59 Msun and radius Rstar
= 0.55 Rsun. We also find that the host star is metal-rich, which is consistent
with the sample of M-type stars known to harbor giant planets.Comment: AJ accepted (in press
First radial velocity results from the MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA)
The MINiature Exoplanet Radial Velocity Array (MINERVA) is a dedicated
observatory of four 0.7m robotic telescopes fiber-fed to a KiwiSpec
spectrograph. The MINERVA mission is to discover super-Earths in the habitable
zones of nearby stars. This can be accomplished with MINERVA's unique
combination of high precision and high cadence over long time periods. In this
work, we detail changes to the MINERVA facility that have occurred since our
previous paper. We then describe MINERVA's robotic control software, the
process by which we perform 1D spectral extraction, and our forward modeling
Doppler pipeline. In the process of improving our forward modeling procedure,
we found that our spectrograph's intrinsic instrumental profile is stable for
at least nine months. Because of that, we characterized our instrumental
profile with a time-independent, cubic spline function based on the profile in
the cross dispersion direction, with which we achieved a radial velocity
precision similar to using a conventional "sum-of-Gaussians" instrumental
profile: 1.8 m s over 1.5 months on the RV standard star HD 122064.
Therefore, we conclude that the instrumental profile need not be perfectly
accurate as long as it is stable. In addition, we observed 51 Peg and our
results are consistent with the literature, confirming our spectrograph and

Magnetic inflation and Stellar Mass. II. On the radii of wingle, rapidly rotating, fully convective M-dwarf stars
Main-sequence, fully convective M dwarfs in eclipsing binaries are observed to be larger than stellar evolutionary models predict by as much as 10%–15%. A proposed explanation for this discrepancy involves effects from strong magnetic fields, induced by rapid rotation via the dynamo process. Although, a handful of single, slowly rotating M dwarfs with radius measurements from interferometry also appear to be larger than models predict, suggesting that rotation or binarity specifically may not be the sole cause of the discrepancy. We test whether single, rapidly rotating, fully convective stars are also larger than expected by measuring their distribution. We combine photometric rotation periods from the literature with rotational broadening () measurements reported in this work for a sample of 88 rapidly rotating M dwarf stars. Using a Bayesian framework, we find that stellar evolutionary models underestimate the radii by 10 \% \mbox{--}15{ \% }_{-2.5}^{+3}, but that at higher masses (0.18 < M < 0.4 M Sun), the discrepancy is only about 6% and comparable to results from interferometry and eclipsing binaries. At the lowest masses (0.08 < M < 0.18 M Sun), we find that the discrepancy between observations and theory is 13%–18%, and we argue that the discrepancy is unlikely to be due to effects from age. Furthermore, we find no statistically significant radius discrepancy between our sample and the handful of M dwarfs with interferometric radii. We conclude that neither rotation nor binarity are responsible for the inflated radii of fully convective M dwarfs, and that all fully convective M dwarfs are larger than models predict.The authors would like to thank the referee for the thoughtful report, which greatly improved the manuscript. Science opportunities with solar sailing smallsats
Recently, we witnessed how the synergy of small satellite technology and
solar sailing propulsion enables new missions. Together, small satellites with
lightweight instruments and solar sails offer affordable access to deep regions
of the solar system, also making it possible to realize hard-to-reach
trajectories that are not constrained to the ecliptic plane. Combining these
two technologies can drastically reduce travel times within the solar system,
while delivering robust science. With solar sailing propulsion capable of
reaching the velocities of ~5-10 AU/yr, missions using a rideshare launch may
reach the Jovian system in two years, Saturn in three. The same technologies
could allow reaching solar polar orbits in less than two years. Fast,
cost-effective, and maneuverable sailcraft that may travel outside the ecliptic
plane open new opportunities for affordable solar system exploration, with
great promise for heliophysics, planetary science, and astrophysics. Such
missions could be modularized to reach different destinations with different
sets of instruments. Benefiting from this progress, we present the "Sundiver"
concept, offering novel possibilities for the science community. We discuss
some of the key technologies, the current design of the Sundiver sailcraft
vehicle and innovative instruments, along with unique science opportunities
that these technologies enable, especially as this exploration paradigm
evolves. We formulate policy recommendations to allow national space agencies,
industry, and other stakeholders to establish a strong scientific,
programmatic, and commercial focus, enrich and deepen the space enterprise and
broaden its advocacy base by including the Sundiver paradigm as a part of
