    Analysis of Cardiac Ion Channels to Understand Arrhythmias Which Lead to Sudden Cardiac Death

    There are 300,000-400,000 fatalities attributed to sudden cardiac death every year in the U.S. due to a lack of sufficient research on mechanisms causing arrhythmias1. Malfunctions with the ion channels in the heart may lead to lethal arrhythmias. The purpose of this work is to study ion channels and evaluate malfunctions relative to normally functioning hearts. Plasmid insertion in E. coli assayed whether functional ion channels reach the membrane, and confocal fluorescent microscopy was used to illuminate cellular functionality. In addition, genetic analysis was used to determine the extent of hereditary factors in sudden cardiac death. Genes that encode for the voltage-gated sodium, potassium, and calcium ion channels were analyzed at the genetic level using isolated DNA samples and traditional Sanger sequencing methods to identify mutations that may be responsible for sudden cardiac death syndromes. For example, Long QT syndrome, Short QT syndrome, and Brugada syndrome are caused by mutations in these ion channels. Once these mutations are identified, genetic engineering techniques can be used in the generation of new heart cells from the stem cells found in somatic tissue. Generation of such heart cells is important because it could lead to the development of personalized treatment for degenerative diseases such as heart failure in the future.     "Appearance potent"? A content analysis of UK gay and straight men's magazines.

    With little actual appraisal, a more 'appearance potent' (i.e., a reverence for appearance ideals) subculture has been used to explain gay men's greater body dissatisfaction in comparison to straight men's. This study sought to assess the respective appearance potency of each subculture by a content analysis of 32 issues of the most read gay (Attitude, Gay Times) and straight men's magazines (Men's Health, FHM) in the UK. Images of men and women were coded for their physical characteristics, objectification and nudity, as were the number of appearance adverts and articles. The gay men's magazines featured more images of men that were appearance ideal, nude and sexualized than the straight men's magazines. The converse was true for the images of women and appearance adverts. Although more research is needed to understand the effect of this content on the viewer, the findings are consistent with a more appearance potent gay male subculture

    Energy loss of fast quarks in nuclei

    We report an analysis of the nuclear dependence of the yield of Drell-Yan dimuons from the 800 GeV/c proton bombardment of 2H^2H, C, Ca, Fe, and W targets. Employing a new formulation of the Drell-Yan process in the rest frame of the nucleus, this analysis examines the effect of initial-state energy loss and shadowing on the nuclear-dependence ratios versus the incident proton's momentum fraction and dimuon effective mass. The resulting energy loss per unit path length is dE/dz=2.32±0.52±0.5-dE/dz = 2.32 \pm 0.52\pm 0.5 GeV/fm. This is the first observation of a nonzero energy loss of partons traveling in nuclear environment.Comment: 5 pages, including 4 figure

    Diagnosis of Esophagitis Based on Face Recognition Techniques

    Face recognition technology has evolved over years with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method being the benchmark for recognition efficiency. The face recognition techniques take care of variation of illumination, pose and other features of the face in the image. We envisage an application of these face recognition techniques for classification of medical images. The motivating factor being, given a condition of an organ it is represented by some typical features. In this paper we report the use of the face recognition techniques to classify the type of Esophagitis, a condition of inflammation of the esophagus. The image of the esophagus is captured in the process of endoscopy. We test PCA, Fisher Face method and Independent Component Analysis techniques to classify the images of the esophagus. Esophagitis is classified into four categories. The results of classification for each method are reported and the results are compared
