Forensic analysis of deduplicated file systems

    Get PDF
Deduplication splits files into fragments, which are stored in a chunk repository. Deduplication stores chunks that are common to multiple files only once. From a forensics point of view, a deduplicated device is very difficult to recover and it requires a specific knowledge of how this technology operates. Deduplication starts from a whole file, and transforms it in an organized set of fragments. In the recent past, it was reserved to datacenters, and used to reduce space for backups inside virtual tape library (VTL) devices. Now this technology is available in open source packages like OpenDedup, or directly as an operating system feature, as in Microsoft Windows Server or in ZFS. Recently Microsoft included this feature in Windows 10 Technical Preview. Digital investigation tools need to be improved to detect, analyze and recover the content of deduplicated file systems. Deduplication adds a layer to data access that needs to be investigated, in order to act correctly during seizure and further analysis. This research analyzes deduplication technology in the perspective of a digital forensic investigation

Teaching Intercultural Citizenship through Intercultural Service Learning in World Language Education

    Get PDF
Globalization and internationalization have created a need for dialogue among people of different persuasions in our own societies and beyond. Language teachers can meet this challenge through the concepts of intercultural citizenship and intercultural service learning, renewing emphasis on educational and humanistic aims as well as instrumental. Students in an advanced Spanish course volunteered in a school and a legal center, interacting one-on-one with unaccompanied minors and immigrants fleeing Central America. The evaluation focused on the impact on learners’ understanding of the society in which they live, and perceptions of their own language learning during their work as active citizens. Data from students’ academic blogs and diaries were analyzed thematically. They show a heightened awareness of language competence, as students use their knowledge of Spanish in their voluntary work, and increased intercultural competence in students’ reports on their critical evaluation of perspectives and practices in their own culture and those of others

Job satisfaction among healthcare workers in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic

: Using a unique survey of more than 7,000 respondents conducted immediately after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy, we investigate potential drivers of the job satisfaction of healthcare workers. Relying on a representative sample of Italian physicians and nurses, we show that, in addition to personal characteristics (e.g., age, gender, health status), contextual factors (i.e., working conditions) play the leading role in explaining variation in the level of satisfaction (58%). In particular, working in a high-quality facility increases worker satisfaction and willingness to remain in the profession, and in the current medical specialization, while working in a province with a perceived shortage of medical personnel yields the opposite result. Direct experience with COVID-19 (e.g., having tested positive) is not significantly correlated with the level of job satisfaction, which is instead significantly reduced by changes in the working conditions caused by the health emergency

    Get PDF

The present paper performs an analysis of the process of construction of memories related to the building named as Veronese’s Big House, located in the district of Otavio Rocha, city of Flores da Cunha, in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). Its construction is linked to the Italian immigration process in the northeast of the state, started at the end of the 19h century, once that the building is among the first houses built in the region. As the building was listed as Historic and Cultural Heritage of the state of Rio Grande do Sul by the CPHAE (current named as IPHAE) and underwent a restoration process between 2015 and 2017, the central objective of this research was to analyze the conditions that made such acts possible, thus identifying their motivations and the main values activated for that. Understanding the act of preserving material patrimony as a way of constructing memory, and taking into consideration that memories are always constituted from the preocuppations of the present time, this research sought to analyze the memories constructed since the moment that the building was listed as Historical and Cultural Heritage until its recent restoration, as well the its uses, being possible to identify the work of framing memory. For this, was used as historical sources the process that listed the building as Historical and Cultural Heritage, newspaper reports, an oral interview and the analysis of the reopening ceremony of the building
