Producer survey results are analyzed to determine factors influencing value-enhanced grain (VEG) risk perceptions and VEG crop insurance adoption. VEG production is perceived to be riskier than commodity production. VEG types, input costs, and production problems affect risk perceptions. Factors including previous insurance use impact VEG crop insurance adoption.Risk and Uncertainty,

Anti-Stall Fans for the Mining Industry

Stable performance of mine ventilation fans is important not only for maintaining adequate ventilation of the mine, but also to maintain the integrity of the fan unit itself. It is demonstrated, herein, that a properly designed and applied stabilization device, integrated into the fan casing itself, will assure stable performance and actually extend the fan\u27s capability

Is Acute High-Dose Secondhand Smoke Exposure Always Harmful to Microvascular Function in Healthy Adults?

Prev Cardiol.Long-term exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with impaired vascular function. The authors investigated the vascular and blood pressure (BP) reactions to acute SHS exposure. Twenty-five healthy nonsmoking adults underwent a 1-hour exposure to SHS (mean fine particulate matter <2.5 μm level=315±116 μg/m 3 ). Microvascular endothelial-dependent vasodilatation (EDV) (EndoPAT, Itamar Medical, Caesarea, Israel) and aortic hemodynamics/compliance (SphygmoCor, AtCor Medical, West Ryde, Australia) were measured before and after the SHS exposure with BP measured every 15 minutes during and for a 24-hour period before and after the exposure. SHS exposure did not change EDV, aortic hemodynamics, arterial compliance, or 24-hour BP. However, diastolic BP significantly increased during the SHS exposure period by 3.4±5.6 mm Hg. Our brief SHS exposure did not impair microvascular endothelial function or arterial compliance in healthy nonsmoking adults, but brachial diastolic BP increased.Prev Cardiol. 2010;13:175–179. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/79199/1/j.1751-7141.2010.00074.x.pd

A Comparison Of New Calculations Of The Yearly 10Be Production In The Earths Polar Atmosphere By Cosmic Rays With Yearly 10Be Measurements In Multiple Greenland Ice Cores Between 1939 And 1994 - A Troubling Lack Of Concordance Paper #2

We have compared the yearly production rates of 10Be by cosmic rays in the Earths polar atmosphere over the last 50-70 years with 10Be measurements from two separate ice cores in Greenland. These ice cores provide measurements of the annual 10Be concentration and 10Be flux levels during this time. The scatter in the ice core yearly data vs. the production data is larger than the average solar 11 year production variations that are being measured. The cross correlation coefficients between the yearly 10Be production and the ice core 10Be measurements for this time period are <0.4 in all comparisons between ice core data and 10Be production, including 10Be concentrations, 10Be fluxes and in comparing the two separate ice core measurements. In fact, the cross correlation between the two ice core measurements, which should be measuring the same source, is the lowest of all, only ~0.2. These values for the correlation coefficient are all indicative of a "poor" correlation. The regression line slopes for the best fit lines between the 10Be production and the 10Be measurements used in the cross correlation analysis are all in the range 0.4-0.6. This is a particular problem for historical projections of solar activity based on ice core measurements which assume a 1:1 correspondence. We have made other tests of the correspondence between the 10Be predictions and the ice core measurements which lead to the same conclusion, namely that other influences on the ice core measurements, as large as or larger than the production changes themselves, are occurring. These influences could be climatic or instrumentally based. We suggest new ice core measurements that might help in defining more clearly what these influences are and-if possible-to correct for them.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure

Valsartan Improves Insulin Sensitivity without Altering Vascular Function in Healthy Overweight Adults without the Metabolic Syndrome

Background. We investigated hyperactivity of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) as a cause of endothelial dysfunction in obese humans. Methods. Thirty five healthy overweight (BMI = 33.6 ± 6.6 kg m −2) adults (33 ± 10 years old) without cardiovascular risk factors received valsartan (160 mg) orally daily or a matching placebo for 6 weeks each. Results. Baseline flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) and nitroglycerin-mediated dilatation (NMD) were not altered by placebo or valsartan. However, fasting plasma insulin was significantly decreased by valsartan compared to placebo (−4.6 ± 16.0 μUmL−1 versus −0.4 ± 11.6 μUmL−1, P = 0.032) with no changes in glucose. A secondary analysis in patients with elevated waist to hip ratios (ÿ0.85, n = 18) showed an increase in FMD with valsartan. Conclusions. Our findings suggest that angiotensin 2 receptor blockade may aid in the prevention of diabetes even at the earliest stages of risk due solely to uncomplicated obesity. The lack of an improvement in FMD does not support a central role of RAS-hyperactivity in the etiology of the vascular dysfunction due solely to obesity. However, it is possible that obese patients with central adiposity may improve FMD with RAS blockade, and future investigation is warranted in this subgroup.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/63259/1/met.2007.0002.pd
