Metal-Insulator Transition in a Generalized Hubbard Model with Correlated Hopping at Half-Filling
In the present paper metal-insulator transition is studied in a generalized
Hubbard model with correlated hopping at half-filling and zero temperature.
Single-particle Green function and energy spectrum of electron system are
calculated. The expressions for energy gap width and the concentration of polar
states (holes or doublons) are obtained. The conditions for metallic and
insulating states are found.Comment: 11 pages, 2 eps figures, Latex 2.09, submitted to Phys. Stat. Sol.

While friends back home are wrapping up the Spring semester I am obliged to continue with my studies in Geneva, Switzerland. In cahoots with the other students in my program, I decided to opt out of attending my one remaining French language class and even though I enjoyed the professor\u27s quirky sense of fashion and sometimes equally far out teaching methods, the thought of no exam has lighted the study burden considerably. In any event I still manage to meet twice weekly to practice French with my tandem language partner, an African man studying for his master\u27s degree in environmental science
Meeting people is easy
Implementing Nutrition Education During Advisory Periods to Decrease Obesity and Increase Students’ Social Emotional Well-Being
Childhood obesity rates are at an all time high, and mental health issues are rising every day. Recently, Carl Sandburg High School has seen a steady increase of the number of students’ with high Body Mass Index (BMI) and mental health struggles. This school improvement plan addresses the impact and role the school environment can have in decreasing students’ BMI and increasing students’ quality of life. The plan contains information on developing a nutrition education intervention program, as well as making changes to the school breakfast and lunch program and the food choices it provides students
Feel like going home (USA 2003)
Examining Food Insecurity Among High School Students: A Risks and Resources Model
This study examined the relationships between food insecurity, risks, and resources among adolescents attending a large high school in Northwest Arkansas. In a sample of 1,493 students, in which the majority are Hispanic/Latino and receive free and reduced lunch, food insecurity relationships were first assessed controlling for a number of sociodemographic variables, such as ethnicity, gender, and social class. In addition, a number of risk and resource variables were identified at four ecological levels: individual, family, school/peer, and community. These risks and resources were analyzed using a three-step ordinal regression model in order to examine how sociodemographic controls, risks, and resources were related to food insecurity. Statistical analyses revealed that depression, household structure, student risk, and neighborhood risk all were positively associated with food insecurity, controlling for sociodemographic variables. In addition, self-esteem, eating meals with family, and peer social capital were all significantly associated with lower levels of food insecurity, but did not immediately impact the “effects” of the risk variables. Collectively, these findings tell an important story about adolescent food insecurity and the role that social and psychological circumstances play in determining varying levels of food insecurity. This study highlights that children and adolescents can be reliable respondents and spokespersons of their own experiences with food insecurity
Southern Annular Mode response to volcanic eruptions: implications for ice core proxies
Large tropical volcanic eruptions have been observed to have a significant influence on the large-scale circulation patterns of the Northern Hemisphere, through mechanisms related to the radiative effects of the sulfate aerosols resulting from the volcanic injection of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere. While no such volcanically induced anomalies in Southern Hemisphere circulation have yet been observed, we find that in general circulation model simulations, eruptions with sulfur dioxide injections larger than that of the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption do result in significant circulation changes in the SH, specifically an enhanced positive phase of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). We explore the mechanisms for such a SAM response, as well as the corresponding changes in SH temperature, sea ice and precipitation. We also explore how the anomalously strong zonal winds characteristic of the positive SAM regime affect the rate of sulfate deposition to the Antarctic ice-sheet. We suggest that the use of ice-core sulfate records as a proxy for past volcanic activity may benefit from including knowledge of, or better assumptions regarding the changes in large scale atmospheric circulation after large tropical eruptions

Small Area Fair Market Rents Can Increase Section 8 Voucher Access to Jobs-Rich, Low Poverty Communities in Sacramento
The Section 8 voucher program enables low-income residents to rent homes in the private market while receiving financial assistance to keep their housing affordable. Unfortunately, voucher holders are more likely to live in high poverty areas, and the traditional formula used by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) may be partly responsible. HUD sets Section 8 limits, known as Fair Market Rents (FMRs), based on the 40th percentile rent of each region. As a result, vouchers cannot be used in the more expensive parts of metropolitan areas where most of the rental units available are more expensive than that regional limit. HUD is now experimenting with recalculating the FMRs at the ZIP code level in select cities to correct this imbalance. These new geographic areas would be known as “Small Area Fair Market Rents” (SAFMRs).This brief summarizes findings from the project, which evaluated this HUD policy by calculating if a set of for-rent listings across California are accessible to a voucher holder under the current FMRs limits and again under the proposed SAFMRs limits. The rental listings, from a proprietary source, include data from 2012 and 2013. This brief focuses on results for the Sacramento Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Sacramento, Placer, and El Dorado Counties.View the NCST Project Webpag
