    New contention resolution schemes for WiMAX

    Abstract—The use of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology is increasing due to the use of Internet and multimedia applications with strict requirements of end–to–end delay and jitter, through wireless devices. The IEEE 802.16 standard, which defines the physical (PHY) and the medium access control (MAC) layers, is one of the BWA standards. Its MAC layer is centralized basis, where the Base Station (BS) is responsible for assigning the needed bandwidth for each Subscriber Station (SS), which requests bandwidth competing between all of them. The standard defines a contention resolution process to resolve the potential occurrence of collisions during the requesting process.     Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Mental Vulnerability Questionnaire in Undergraduate Students

    PURPOSE: Translate, adapt the language, and assess the psychometric properties of the Mental Vulnerability Questionnaire (MVQ) in a Portuguese population sample of young adults. DESIGN AND METHODS: A psychometric validation study was performed. The sample comprised 166 undergraduate students. Factor analysis was applied to extract three indicators. FINDINGS: The MVQ showed divergent validity with the Positive Mental Health Questionnaire (p < .001) and convergent validity with the Mental Health Inventory including five items (p < .001). Reliability was verified through the assessment of internal consistency, evidencing positive outcomes (Cronbach's α = 0.81). PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: The MVQ shows psychometric properties enabling its adaptation to clinical practice and research, essential to an effective screening of mental vulnerability

    Strategies to mitigate the emission of methane in pastures: Enteric methane: A review

    The global population reached 7.9 billion in 2021, which represents a 160% increase in the number of people to be fed since 1960. Agricultural systems must sustainably meet food demand for this growing population while minimizing or mitigating potential environmental impacts, which are of growing concern to both consumers and the scientific community. High protein animal products (meat and milk) play a crucial part in human nutrition and pastures represent ~20% of the planet’s surface. Pastoral areas have a great influence on both ecological balance and human subsistence. Ruminant livestock production systems are hotly debated because of the emission of methane, which is produced during enteric fermentation of ingested food within the rumen. Methanogenesis is a naturally occurring process in the digestive system of ruminant animals and ingesting a high-quality diet has been shown to reduce methane production. An additional function of pastoral grasslands is the capacity of the soils to operate as carbon sinks. Well managed pastures absorb carbon from the atmosphere where it can add to soil organic matter directly, through residue decomposition or excrement returns. However, in Brazil and globally, the efficiency of animal productivity tends to be lower in extensively grazed farming systems. Changes to pasture and grazing management in combination with the adoption of technology is necessary to improve the quality of pastures, increase animal productivity, and consequently reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock. This review will discuss how to improve the conversion efficiency using pasture management to reduce or mitigate enteric methane production

    CENTRO DE PARTO NORMAL COMO ESTRATÉGIA DE INCENTIVO AO PARTO NORMAL: ESTUDO DESCRITIVO

    Recientemente se verificó un esfuerzo gubernamental para reducir las tasas de cesariana en el sector público y cualificar la asistencia al parto normal. Así, se crearon los Centros de Parto Normal (CPN) destinados al acompañamiento de nacimientos fisiológicos, a cargo de enfermeras obstétricas. Este estudio descriptivo tuvo como objetivo caracterizar a las parturientas en cuanto a la edad materna, historia obstétrica, condiciones del parto y del recién-nacido en un CPN, en la ciudad de São Paulo. Se utilizaron datos secundarios de registros de nacimientos atendidos por enfermeras obstétricas y se analizaron 1.860 registros de partos ocurridos en julio y agosto de 2001. Los resultados indican: edad media de 23,7 años; 44,4% de nulíparas; 79,0% de partos normales; peso medio de los recién-nacidos de 3.174g; Apgar ≥7 en el primer y quinto minutos en 93,7% y 99,1% de los recién nacidos, respectivamente. Se concluyó que la atención al parto hecha por enfermeras obstétricas es importante para valorar la fisiología del parto y nacimiento, con indicadores obstétricos y neonatales de calidad.Tem-se verificado um esforço governamental para reduzir as taxas de cesariana no setor público e qualificar a assistência ao parto normal.     A linkage map for the B-genome of Arachis (Fabaceae) and its synteny to the A-genome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Arachis hypogaea </it>(peanut) is an important crop worldwide, being mostly used for edible oil production, direct consumption and animal feed. Cultivated peanut is an allotetraploid species with two different genome components, A and B. Genetic linkage maps can greatly assist molecular breeding and genomic studies. However, the development of linkage maps for <it>A. hypogaea </it>is difficult because it has very low levels of polymorphism. This can be overcome by the utilization of wild species of <it>Arachis</it>, which present the A- and B-genomes in the diploid state, and show high levels of genetic variability.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this work, we constructed a B-genome linkage map, which will complement the previously published map for the A-genome of <it>Arachis</it>, and produced an entire framework for the tetraploid genome. This map is based on an F<sub>2 </sub>population of 93 individuals obtained from the cross between the diploid <it>A. ipaënsis </it>(K30076) and the closely related <it>A. magna </it>(K30097), the former species being the most probable B genome donor to cultivated peanut. In spite of being classified as different species, the parents showed high crossability and relatively low polymorphism (22.3%), compared to other interspecific crosses. The map has 10 linkage groups, with 149 loci spanning a total map distance of 1,294 cM. The microsatellite markers utilized, developed for other <it>Arachis </it>species, showed high transferability (81.7%). Segregation distortion was 21.5%. This B-genome map was compared to the A-genome map using 51 common markers, revealing a high degree of synteny between both genomes.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The development of genetic maps for <it>Arachis </it>diploid wild species with A- and B-genomes effectively provides a genetic map for the tetraploid cultivated peanut in two separate diploid components and is a significant advance towards the construction of a transferable reference map for <it>Arachis</it>. Additionally, we were able to identify affinities of some <it>Arachis </it>linkage groups with <it>Medicago truncatula</it>, which will allow the transfer of information from the nearly-complete genome sequences of this model legume to the peanut crop.</p

    Cryptococcus neoformans induces IL-8 secretion and CXCL1 expression by human bronchial epithelial cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Cryptococcus neoformans </it>(<it>C. neoformans</it>) is a globally distributed fungal pathogen with the potential to cause serious disease, particularly among immune compromised hosts. Exposure to this organism is believed to occur by inhalation and may result in pneumonia and/or disseminated infection of the brain as well as other organs. Little is known about the role of airway epithelial cells in cryptococcal recognition or their ability to induce an inflammatory response.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Immortalized BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells and primary normal human bronchial epithelium (NHBE) were stimulated <it>in vitro </it>with encapsulated or acapsular <it>C. neoformans </it>cultivated at room temperature or 37°C. Activation of bronchial epithelial cells was characterized by analysis of inflammatory cytokine and chemokine expression, transcription factor activation, fungal-host cell association, and host cell damage.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Viable <it>C. neoformans </it>is a strong activator of BEAS-2B cells, resulting in the production of the neutrophil chemokine Interleukin (IL)-8 in a time- and dose-dependent manner. IL-8 production was observed only in response to acapsular <it>C. neoformans </it>that was grown at 37°C. <it>C. neoformans </it>was also able to induce the expression of the chemokine CXCL1 and the transcription factor CAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta (CEBP/β) in BEAS-2B cells. NHBE was highly responsive to stimulation with <it>C. neoformans</it>; in addition to transcriptional up regulation of CXCL1, these primary cells exhibited the greatest IL-8 secretion and cell damage in response to stimulation with an acapsular strain of <it>C. neoformans</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study demonstrates that human bronchial epithelial cells mediate an acute inflammatory response to <it>C. neoformans </it>and are susceptible to damage by this fungal pathogen. The presence of capsular polysaccharide and <it>in vitro </it>fungal culture conditions modulate the host inflammatory response to <it>C. neoformans</it>. Human bronchial epithelial cells are likely to contribute to the initial stages of pulmonary host defense <it>in vivo</it>.</p

    Entomological Surveillance of Behavioural Resilience and Resistance in Residual Malaria Vector Populations.

    The most potent malaria vectors rely heavily upon human blood so they are vulnerable to attack with insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) within houses. Mosquito taxa that can avoid feeding or resting indoors, or by obtaining blood from animals, mediate a growing proportion of the dwindling transmission that persists as ITNs and IRS are scaled up. Increasing frequency of behavioural evasion traits within persisting residual vector systems usually reflect the successful suppression of the most potent and vulnerable vector taxa by IRS or ITNs, rather than their failure. Many of the commonly observed changes in mosquito behavioural patterns following intervention scale-up may well be explained by modified taxonomic composition and expression of phenotypically plastic behavioural preferences, rather than altered innate preferences of individuals or populations. Detailed review of the contemporary evidence base does not yet provide any clear-cut example of true behavioural resistance and is, therefore, consistent with the hypothesis presented. Caution should be exercised before over-interpreting most existing reports of increased frequency of behavioural traits which enable mosquitoes to evade fatal contact with insecticides: this may simply be the result of suppressing the most behaviourally vulnerable of the vector taxa that constituted the original transmission system. Mosquito taxa which have always exhibited such evasive traits may be more accurately described as behaviourally resilient, rather than resistant. Ongoing national or regional entomological monitoring surveys of physiological susceptibility to insecticides should be supplemented with biologically and epidemiologically meaningfully estimates of malaria vector population dynamics and the behavioural phenotypes that determine intervention impact, in order to design, select, evaluate and optimize the implementation of vector control measures

    Eliminating Malaria Vectors.

    Malaria vectors which predominantly feed indoors upon humans have been locally eliminated from several settings with insecticide treated nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying or larval source management. Recent dramatic declines of An. gambiae in east Africa with imperfect ITN coverage suggest mosquito populations can rapidly collapse when forced below realistically achievable, non-zero thresholds of density and supporting resource availability. Here we explain why insecticide-based mosquito elimination strategies are feasible, desirable and can be extended to a wider variety of species by expanding the vector control arsenal to cover a broader spectrum of the resources they need to survive. The greatest advantage of eliminating mosquitoes, rather than merely controlling them, is that this precludes local selection for behavioural or physiological resistance traits. The greatest challenges are therefore to achieve high biological coverage of targeted resources rapidly enough to prevent local emergence of resistance and to then continually exclude, monitor for and respond to re-invasion from external populations
