A knowledge of the behavior and biological aspects of natural enemies is extremely important for the establishment of biological control programs. Biological aspects of the larvae, pre-pupae and pupae of the predator Ceraeochrysa everes (Banks) were studied. Larvae of the adult F1 generation were reared in the laboratory (25 ± 2°C, 65 ± 10 % RH and 14h photophase) on eggs of the Angoumois grain moth Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier). The duration and viability of the embryonic period, development of the immature stages and egg-adult period were evaluated. The mean embryonic period was 5.0 days, while the mean durations of the first, second and third instars were: 5.1 ± 0.03; 4.3 ± 0.05 and 4.5 ± 0.05 days, respectively, with viability exceeding 90%. Duration of the larval, pre-pupal and pupal stages averaged 13.9 ± 0.07; 5.7 ± 0.07 and 9.6 ± 0.12 days, respectively. Duration of the biological cycle was 34 ± 0.11 days on average. S. cerealella eggs were not suitable for rearing C. everes under laboratory conditions because they affected predator development

Reinforced dowel type connections: mechanical behaviour under cyclic tests

Dowel type joints are widely used in timber structures given their ease of construction and ability to dissipate energy when subjected to cyclic loading. The behaviour of these connections under cyclic loading depends on good detailing at the design phase, which is developed to guarantee ductile failure modes and avoid wood splitting through careful consideration of the dowel-to-edge and dowel-to-end distances. This conference paper presents the cyclic response of a dowel type connection that is reinforced with self-tapping screws (STS). The experimental campaign included unreinforced joints, with inadequate and adequate end distances as defined per Eurocode 5, and joints with self-tapping screws fastened perpendicular to the dowels to avoid premature splitting. To reduce the number of variables of the experimental design, dowel slenderness and position of the reinforcements were kept throughout the testing programme. Moreover, the laboratory tests only considered specimens loaded in the parallel-to-grain direction. The influence of timber species was evaluated by using specimens from Pinus pinaster and Pinus sylvestris. Laboratory testing results highlight the ability of dowel-type joints to withstand large displacement reversals without rupture. The reinforcement scheme proposed in this work achieved ductility values consistent with the Eurocode's Ductility Class High structures. This work was financed by FEDER funds through the Competitivity and Internationalization Operational Programme COMPETE, Portugal 2020, and by national funds through FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology within the scope of the Timquake project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-032031. © WCTE 2018 Committee. The nonlinear behaviour of connections between structural elements is critical to the performance of mass-timber structures under seismic loads. However, limited work has been developed in nonlinear modelling and fragility assessment of mass-timber structures. To improve the accuracy of this approach, in particular when considering structures with ring-doweled moment-resisting connections, a nonlinear modelling approach and fragility assessment are proposed and a prototype example of a three-story building is analysed herein as a case study. For the case study, connections and members were designed following the prescriptions in Eurocode 5 and Eurocode 8, considering a high ductility structure. The mechanical properties of the structure are modelled as random variables to evaluate the impact of uncertainty on the prediction of the structural performance, in particular, on the probability of occurrence of ductile and brittle failure modes. The structure is studied under both nonlinear static analysis and multi-record incremental dynamic analysis. From these, fragility curves for different damage levels are computed and a q-factor is proposed. Results indicate that the requirements of Eurocode 5 and Eurocode 8 are sufficient to guarantee adequate performance for this type of structure, albeit these may be overconservative. Moreover, it is shown that uncertainties in material properties have a significant impact on the collapse capacity of these structures. This work had financial support of the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), through PhD grant PD/BD/113679/2015 included in InfraRisk-PhD program. The results regarding the numerical model for the connections were developed during a Short-term Scientific Mission (STSM) within scope of COST Action FP1101: Assessment, Reinforcement and Monitoring of Timber Structures. Thus, the insightful discussions with Professor Roberto Tomasi and Doctor Andrea Polastri are gratefully acknowledged. National and international regulatory agencies by issuing new standards have tried to bring the accounting recorded values near to economic values. Nevertheless, it is understood that the latter carry a deeper level of subjectivity, on the grounds that completely new values will be obtained by the adoption of different conditions. This study aims to perform a comparative analysis between two company valuation methods: the Discounted Cash Flow and the Residual Income Valuation while performing the impairment test. The study case uses the database prepared by a telecommunications company to its subsidiary in the Internet sector for the purpose of the impairment test assessment. Some points have been identified as deserving special attention in a company’s valuation assessment, namely the discount rate and the growth rate. The results show that: 1) a firm’s economic value is sensitive to the use of a sole growth rate to calculate the perpetuity, considering that any changes in the rate will alter the decision based on the test; 2) the setup of a discount rate as a parameter in a firm’s valuation assessment is a fundamental point for the write-off decision resulting from an impairment test

The objective of this work was to determine the fruit yield and water productivity of the 'Prata Anã' banana plant, under different combinations of planting densities and irrigation depths in its fourth production cycle. The experiment was designed in randomized complete blocks in a split-plot arrangement with four replicates, with the following factors: two levels of irrigation depth (50 and 100% crop evapotranspiration) in the plots and four levels of planting density (1,666, 2,083, 2,666, and 3,333 plants per hectare) in the subplots. Crop evapotranspiration and yield characteristics were evaluated. Reductions in the mass of hands, number of hands, and number of fruits were observed as planting density increased, as well as increments in the yield of hands and in water productivity and a reduction in water footprint. It is possible to increase the yield of the banana plant by increasing its planting density and reducing the irrigation depth applied in its fourth production cycle

Gomesin, a peptide produced by the spider Acanthoscurria gomesiana, is a potent anticryptococcal agent that acts in synergism with fluconazole

Gomesin is an 18-residue cysteine-rich antimicrobial peptide produced by hemocytes of the spider Acanthoscurria gomesiana. in the present study, the antifungal properties of gomesin against Cryptococcus neoformans, the etiologic agent of cryptococcosis, were evaluated. Gomesin bound to the cell surface of cryptococci, which resulted in cell death associated with membrane permeabilization. Antifungal concentrations of gomesin were not toxic for human brain cells. Supplementation of cryptococcal cultures with the peptide (1 mu M) caused a decrease in capsule expression and rendered fungal cells more susceptible to killing by human brain phagocytes. the possible use of gomesin in combination with fluconazole, a standard antifungal drug, was also evaluated. in association with fluconazole, gomesin concentrations with low antimicrobial activity (0.1-1 mu M) inhibited fungal growth and enhanced the antimicrobial activity of brain phagocytes. These results reveal the potential of gomesin to promote inhibition of cryptococcal growth directly or by enhancing the effectiveness of host defenses.Univ Fed Rio de Janeiro, Inst Microbiol Prof Paulo Goes, Dept Microbiol Geral, Lab Estudos Integrados Bioquim Microbiana, BR-21941590 Rio de Janeiro, BrazilUniv São Paulo, Inst Ciencias Biomed, Dept Parasitol, BR-05508 São Paulo, BrazilUniv Texas, Dept Biol Sci, El Paso, TX 79968 USAUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Biofis, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Dept Biofis, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc
