    Fidelity of Implementation of Arts Integration in Middle School English Language Arts

    An urban middle school in the southern U.S. introduced an arts integration (AI) program, however, student achievement in the English language arts (ELA) has not improved. Therefore, the problem to be investigated through this study is that it has not been determined if AI was implemented into ELA classrooms with fidelity. The purpose of this study was to examine teachers’ and administrators’ perceptions of the fidelity of implementation (FOI) of the AI program in the ELA classrooms, as well as school documents and artifacts, to determine whether the delivery of instruction replicated the original instructional design. Guided by Rogers’s FOI framework, research questions addressed ELA teachers’ and administrators’ perceptions of the FOI of the AI program in ELA classrooms, and how the AI program in ELA classrooms as related to the original intended design, was reflected in documents and artifacts at the school site. This qualitative case study, grounded in Roger’s FOI framework, included interviews with a purposeful sample of 8 ELA teachers and 2 administrators. Teacher lesson plans, professional development plans, the school improvement plans, meeting agendas, school documents related to AI, and classroom artifacts were also reviewed and triangulated. Data were coded and analyzed using inductive analysis. Findings indicated a lack of FOI and the need for professional development on AI for teachers and administrators. A 3-day PD project was developed for teachers and administrators. The findings from this study will strengthen the fidelity and quality of AI instruction in ELA classrooms leading to positive social change thereby strengthening student learning and achievement through the AI program

    Environmental Effects on Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester and Vinylester Composites

    The effects of environment on glass fiber reinforced polyester and vinylester composites immersed in liquids and in humid air were investi gated. Tests were performed at temperatures 23 C and 93 C with the materials exposed to humid air at 50 and 100 percent relative humidities, and to five different liquids: saturated salt water, No. 2 diesel fuel, lubrica ting oil, antifreeze, and indolene.     Secretion of Rhoptry and Dense Granule Effector Proteins by Nonreplicating Toxoplasma Gondii Uracil Auxotrophs Controls the Development of Antitumor Immunity

    Nonreplicating type I uracil auxotrophic mutants of Toxoplasma gondii possess a potent ability to activate therapeutic immunity to established solid tumors by reversing immune suppression in the tumor microenvironment. Here we engineered targeted deletions of parasite secreted effector proteins using a genetically tractable Δku80 vaccine strain to show that the secretion of specific rhoptry (ROP) and dense granule (GRA) proteins by uracil auxotrophic mutants of T. gondii in conjunction with host cell invasion activates antitumor immunity through host responses involving CD8α+ dendritic cells, the IL-12/interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) TH1 axis, as well as CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Deletion of parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM) associated proteins ROP5, ROP17, ROP18, ROP35 or ROP38, intravacuolar network associated dense granule proteins GRA2 or GRA12, and GRA24 which traffics past the PVM to the host cell nucleus severely abrogated the antitumor response. In contrast, deletion of other secreted effector molecules such as GRA15, GRA16, or ROP16 that manipulate host cell signaling and transcriptional pathways, or deletion of PVM associated ROP21 or GRA3 molecules did not affect the antitumor activity. Association of ROP18 with the PVM was found to be essential for the development of the antitumor responses. Surprisingly, the ROP18 kinase activity required for resistance to IFN-γ activated host innate immunity related GTPases and virulence was not essential for the antitumor response. These data show that PVM functions of parasite secreted effector molecules, including ROP18, manipulate host cell responses through ROP18 kinase virulence independent mechanisms to activate potent antitumor responses. Our results demonstrate that PVM associated rhoptry effector proteins secreted prior to host cell invasion and dense granule effector proteins localized to the intravacuolar network and host nucleus that are secreted after host cell invasion coordinately control the development of host immune responses that provide effective antitumor immunity against established ovarian cancer

    Traditional and Health-Related Philanthropy: The Role of Resources and Personality

    I study the relationships of resources and personality characteristics to charitable giving, postmortem organ donation, and blood donation in a nationwide sample of persons in households in the Netherlands. I find that specific personality characteristics are related to specific types of giving: agreeableness to blood donation, empathic concern to charitable giving, and prosocial value orientation to postmortem organ donation. I find that giving has a consistently stronger relation to human and social capital than to personality. Human capital increases giving; social capital increases giving only when it is approved by others. Effects of prosocial personality characteristics decline at higher levels of these characteristics. Effects of empathic concern, helpfulness, and social value orientations on generosity are mediated by verbal proficiency and church attendance.

    Application of combined omics platforms to accelerate biomedical discovery in diabesity

    Diabesity has become a popular term to describe the specific form of diabetes that develops late in life and is associated with obesity. While there is a correlation between diabetes and obesity, the association is not universally predictive. Defining the metabolic characteristics of obesity that lead to diabetes, and how obese individuals who develop diabetes different from those who do not, are important goals. The use of large-scale omics analyses (e.g., metabolomic, proteomic, transcriptomic, and lipidomic) of diabetes and obesity may help to identify new targets to treat these conditions. This report discusses how various types of omics data can be integrated to shed light on the changes in metabolism that occur in obesity and diabetes

    Recurrent inversion polymorphisms in humans associate with genetic instability and genomic disorders.

    Unlike copy number variants (CNVs), inversions remain an underexplored genetic variation class. By integrating multiple genomic technologies, we discover 729 inversions in 41 human genomes. Approximately 85% of inversionsretrotransposition; 80% of the larger inversions are balanced and affect twice as many nucleotides as CNVs. Balanced inversions show an excess of common variants, and 72% are flanked by segmental duplications (SDs) or retrotransposons. Since flanking repeats promote non-allelic homologous recombination, we developed complementary approaches to identify recurrent inversion formation.
