    Light and freshwater discharge drive the biogeochemistry and microbial ecology in a sub-Arctic fjord over the Polar night

    The polar night has recently received increased attention as a surprisingly active biological season. Yet, polar night microbial ecology is a vastly understudied field. To identify the physical and biogeochemical parameters driving microbial activity over the dark season, we studied a sub-Arctic fjord system in northern Norway from autumn to early spring with detailed monthly sampling. We focused on the impact of mixing, terrestrial organic matter input and light on microbial ecosystem dynamics. Our study highlights strong differences in the key drivers between spring, autumn, and winter. The spring bloom started in March in a fully mixed water column, opposing the traditional critical depth hypothesis. Incident solar radiation was the key driver maximum Chlorophyll was reached in April. The onset of the autumn phytoplankton bloom was controlled by vertical mixing, causing nutrient upwelling and dilution of zooplankton grazers, which had their highest biomass during this time. According to the dilution-recoupling hypothesis grazer dilution reduced grazing stress and allowed the fall bloom formation. Mixing at that time was initiated by strong winds and reduced stratification as a consequence of freezing temperatures and lower freshwater runoff. During the light-limited polar night, the primary production was extremely low but bacteria continued growing on decaying algae, their exudates and also allochthonous organic matter. A melting event in January could have increased input of organic matter from land, supporting a mid-winter bacterial bloom. In conclusion, polar night biogeochemistry and microbial ecology was not only driven by light availability, but strongly affected by variability in reshwater discharge and allochthonous carbon input. With climate change freshwater discharge will increase in the Arctic, which will likely increase importance of the dynamics described in this study

    Vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite I-beams with arbitrary lay-ups under axial loads and end moments

    A finite element model with seven degrees of freedom per node is developed to study vibration and buckling of thin-walled composite I-beams with arbitrary lay-ups under constant axial loads and equal end moments. This model is based on the classical lamination theory, and accounts for all the structural coupling coming from material anisotropy. The governing differential equations are derived from the Hamilton’s principle. Numerical results are obtained for thin-walled composite I-beams to investigate the effects of axial force, bending moment and fiber orientation on the buckling moments, natural frequencies, and corresponding vibration mode shapes as well as axial-moment-frequency interaction curves

    ICZM and WTP of stakeholders for beach conservation: Policymaking suggestions from an Italian case study

    In accordance with integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), private stakeholders could be asked to pay for the benefits from beach conservation projects. Since a private contribution is measured by the amount of other goods a person is willing to give up for beach quality, it can be solicited in monetary terms or, when possible, in other forms, such as specific works. In this paper, by analysing the results of two surveys in Italy concerning stakeholders' perceptions of ICZM and their willingness to pay for these benefits, suggestions for beach management are provided to policymakers. One survey focuses on beach visitors who are asked to pay in monetary terms, while the other focuses on sunbathing establishment managers, who are asked to pay not only in monetary terms but also through beach works. The results show that the majority of these stakeholders are fully or partially aware of what ICZM is, and are unwilling to pay. However, regression analysis of those willing to pay suggests that promoting an information and education campaign about ICZM may be important if stakeholders' probability of paying is to be increased

    Niger has two separate marketing channels for grain: one is the official system operated by the government; the other is a parallel channel of private traders. Researchers or policy-makers wanting to study effects of price policies on producers are faced with two sets of prices. This paper seeks to answer the question, which prices matter? Non-nested hypothesis tests are conducted for millet-acreage response equations. The results show that prices from the larger private market are the prices that matter

The former has tended to pay insufficient heed to sexual reproduction, individual mortality and the generational replacement of population, while the latter has undervalued its own distinctive theoretical contribution, portraying demographic change as the effect of causes lying elsewhere. We outline a theory of the reproductive revolution, review some relevant supporting empirical evidence and briefly discuss its implications both for demographic transition theory itself, and for a range of key social changes that we suggest it made possible: the decline of patriarchy and feminisation of the public sphere, the deregulation and privatisation of sexuality, family change, the rise of identity, ‘low’ fertility and ‘population ageing’.Peer reviewe
