The pretext of the implementation of a Quality Management System in a dished ends production company, is a pretext to provoke a deeper analysis and based theme and goal for this project. Understand a concept as subjective as the quality it seems as primary need for the early reflection. Then we go through the history of the concept from medieval Europe to the revolution in quality that would eventually happen in Japan after World War II. Quality as we understand it today still has also the contribution of personalities that have identified several methods that have emerged over time and have been improving the concept, among which we refer three: William Deming, Joseph Juran Moses and Philip B.Crosby. After we reflect about the real impact of the implementation of ISO 9000, using the study of Olivier Boiral, which provides a very real approach of the benefits of implementing quality management systems. Also in the second chapter we analyze the importance of the certification process, concluding that the extra task of an external organization certify the QMS is undoubtedly a way to keep a strict and disciplined system. In the third chapter, "ISO 9001: 2008 versus ISO 9001: 2015," we analyzed in detail the major changes of the future ISO 9001: 2015 in relation to the ISO 9001: 2008: introduction of "risk-based thinking"; emphasis given to the process approach; emphasis given to the "management of change"; "Knowledge management"; "Strategic direction", integrating management systems and quality; the determination that all standards that integrate a management system will follow a new format called "high-level structure" as defined in Annex SL; emphasis and even the consideration of feedback from all stakeholders and processes involved. In the chapter “Presentation of “Company Lda”, the target company in this case study, a metalworking industry producing dished ends for national and international markets. Analyzed the main changes between the current and the future standard are proposed the changes to the system already implemented previously based on the acceptance of the future ISO 9001: 2015 and changes that this provides . The processes and procedures that represent more time and cost will be identified, as well as those that can be quickly adapted to the quality management system and be optimized and more in balance with available resources. To the discussion and development of a new strategy we use various instruments: are established goals, carried out a SWOT analysis, FMEA analysis, knowledge management analysis and finally the Stakeholder Analysis. Together with the proposals for actions referred to in previous analyzes are described intervention proposals for action in the flowcharts. The processes and procedures that stand out here are those which we consider can constitute effective impact and meet what is proposed in the new ISO 9001: 2015, taking into account the major changes seen before

Psychomotor development regression or delay associated with epilepsy represent a diagnostic challenge. The diagnostic approach should take into account age group, epileptic syndrome, physical and neurological data, and organ and/or system involvement. Herein is reported the case of a toddler for whom hair development, epileptic seizure evolution, and electroencephalographic findings were key for Menkes kinky hair disease diagnosis. The typical electroclinical evolution in this syndrome has rarely been previously reported. A 22-month-old boy, born at 35 weeks, was admitted to the hospital by the age of two months due to epileptic seizures. Physical examination revealed dysmorphic facial features, pectus excavatum, and inguinal hernias. Antiepileptic drugs were initiated and one month later the patient was readmitted with recurrent epileptic seizures. Transfer to a hospital with Pediatric Neurology support was required, where light-toned and pleated skin, sparse hair, failure to thrive, and axial hypotonia were remarked. Initial investigation with general metabolic, neuroimaging, ophthalmological, and microarray study revealed no changes. Electroencephalograms were markedly abnormal, initially with focal changes and later with hypsarrhythmia. Considering the patient’s phenotype, copper serum level was analysed, with null value. Molecular study confirmed Menkes kinky hair disease and copper histidine therapy was initiated. Menkes kinky hair disease should be considered in infants with global developmental delay, severe hypotonia, refractory epilepsy, and typical hair and skin changes occurring early in life. However, neonatal diagnosis is hampered by age-unspecific signs and symptoms. Despite being a rare and fatal entity, timely diagnosis allowing early therapy institution and avoiding unnecessary additional tests and prompt genetic counseling are of utmost importance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The PLA component under study was selected from the production line of a brewing company, and it was redesigned and analyzed using the Finite Element Method, 3D printed, and installed under real service. The results obtained indicated that, even though the durability of the 3D printed part was lower than the original, savings of about EUR 7000 a year could be achieved for the component studied. Moreover, it was shown that widespread use of AM with other specific PLA components could result in even more significant savings. Additionally, a metallic hanger (2700 kg/m3 ) from the cockpit of an airplane ATR 70 series 500 was successfully redesigned and additively manufactured in Nylon 645, resulting in a mass reduction of approximately 60% while maintaining its fit-for-purpose. Therefore, the components produced by FDM were used as fully functional components rather than prototype models, which is frequently stated as a major constraint of the FDM process.publishersversionpublishe

ABSTRACT This paper presents a reflection on the assessment of mobile Web content for people with disabilities. It proposes a rationale for an evaluation framework considering: (1) the coherent merge of state of the art guidelines on Web accessibility and mobile best practices; and (2) the usage of current and prospective practices particularly for people with visual impairments. It also presents the preliminary results of a questionnaire that validates that rationale laying the grounds for a coherent evaluation approach

A Two-Stage DEA Model to Evaluate the Performance of Iberian Banks

    Get PDF
This paper’s goal is twofold: it aims to assess the performance of 58 Iberian banks and explore the relationship between such performance and the banks’ Intellectual Capital (IC) efficiency during a post-crisis period. As long as the authors are aware, there is a gap in the literature in exploring the relationship between banks’ global performance and IC efficiency. First, the Data Envelopment Analysis model was adopted to measure the efficiency of Iberian banks and rank them according to their performance. Data were collected digitally, specifically by using the Bankscope database provided by Bureau van Dijk. Results show that by improving their resources management practices, banks can significantly increase their efficiency. Then, fractional regressions were used to infer the relationship between IC’s efficiency and the scores obtained in the first stage. Results suggest that Iberian banks’ global performance is mainly determined by their human capital efficiency. Finally, this study stresses the importance of IC measurement to support more efficient decision-making by bank managers. This work was supported by NECE-UBI, Research Unit in Business Science and Economics, sponsored by the Portuguese Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology, project UIDB/04630/2020, funded by national funds through FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. Intellectual Capital Change Management in the Construction Industry—The Case of an Inter-Organisational Collaboration

Nowadays, due to the complexity of the relationships with external entities, along with the importance that traditional media and the innovative social media have in creating competitive advantages, it is necessary for companies to collaborate in order to create Intellectual Capital (IC). Although collaboration is crucial to create IC, there is a paucity in literature regarding the effects that a specific type of collaboration may have on the IC of an organisation, specifically a franchising with a mediatic actor. Moreover, literature addressing IC creation and destruction over time is scarce, especially when applied to the construction industry. This paper’s goal is twofold: understanding the longitudinal changes of a construction SME’s Intellectual Capital, regarding its creation and destruction; analysing the impact that a specific inter-organisational collaboration franchising—with a mediatic actor may have on such IC. A single in-depth case study was conducted, allowing to conclude that the actions of an organisation can develop both Intellectual Assets and Intellectual Liabilities. It was also concluded that inter-organisational collaboration, through a franchise with an actor with experience in communication, can generate, in the long term, positive and innovative effects regarding the different IC components, namely the Relational one. More specifically, the paper allowed to ascertain that an organisation’s IC changes over time in a dynamic fashion, i.e., Intellectual Liabilities which emerged before an innovative collaboration can be transformed into Intellectual Assets and create competitive advantages. This paper contributes to stress the importance of managing IC, not only when it is created, but namely in when it can be destroyed, in a context of inter-organisational collaborations applied to a construction SMEinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
