Circumstellar molecular line absorption and emission in the optical spectra of post-AGB stars
We present a list of post-AGB stars showing molecular line absorption and
emission in the optical spectrum. Two objects show CH+, one in emission and one
in absorption, and ten stars show C2 and CN in absorption. The Doppler
velocities of the C2 lines and the rotational temperatures indicate that the
line forming region is the AGB remnant. An analysis of the post-AGB stars of
which CO millimeter data is available suggests that the C2} expansion velocity
is of the same order as the CO expansion velocity. HD56126 has been studied in
detail and we find a mass-loss rate of Mdot=2.8e-4 Msol/yr, fC2=2.4e-8 and
fCN=1.3e-8. The mass loss derived from C2 is significantly larger than
Mdot=1.2e-5 Msol/yr derived from CO. We find that all objects with the 21mu
feature in emission show C2 and CN absorption, but not all objects with C2 and

The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO)
AST/RO, a 1.7 m diameter telescope for astronomy and aeronomy studies at
wavelengths between 200 and 2000 microns, was installed at the South Pole
during the 1994-1995 Austral summer. The telescope operates continuously
through the Austral winter, and is being used primarily for spectroscopic
studies of neutral atomic carbon and carbon monoxide in the interstellar medium
of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. The South Pole environment is
unique among observatory sites for unusually low wind speeds, low absolute
humidity, and the consistent clarity of the submillimeter sky. Four heterodyne
receivers, an array receiver, three acousto-optical spectrometers, and an array
spectrometer are installed. A Fabry-Perot spectrometer using a bolometric array
and a Terahertz receiver are in development. Telescope pointing, focus, and
calibration methods as well as the unique working environment and logistical

Rpgrip1 is required for rod outer segment development and ciliary protein trafficking in zebrafish

This work was also supported by the Deanship of Scientific Research at King Saud University for funding this research (Research Project) grant number ‘RGP – VPP – 219’.Mutations in the RPGR-interacting protein 1 (RPGRIP1) gene cause recessive Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), juvenile retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and cone-rod dystrophy. RPGRIP1 interacts with other retinal disease-causing proteins and has been proposed to have a role in ciliary protein transport; however, its function remains elusive. Here, we describe a new zebrafish model carrying a nonsense mutation in the rpgrip1 gene. Rpgrip1homozygous mutants do not form rod outer segments and display mislocalization of rhodopsin, suggesting a role for RPGRIP1 in rhodopsin-bearing vesicle trafficking. Furthermore, Rab8, the key regulator of rhodopsin ciliary trafficking, was mislocalized in photoreceptor cells of rpgrip1 mutants. The degeneration of rod cells is early onset, followed by the death of cone cells. These phenotypes are similar to that observed in LCA and juvenile RP patients. Our data indicate RPGRIP1 is necessary for rod outer segment development through regulating ciliary protein trafficking. The rpgrip1 mutant zebrafish may provide a platform for developing therapeutic treatments for RP patients.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Study of Zγ events and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings in pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV
We present a measurement of the Zγ production cross section and limits on anomalous ZZγ and Zγγ couplings for form-factor scales of Λ=750 and 1000 GeV. The measurement is based on 138 (152) candidates in the eeγ (μμγ) final state using 320(290)pb-1 of pp̄ collisions at s=1.96TeV. The 95% C.L. limits on real and imaginary parts of individual anomalous couplings are |h10,30Z|<0.23, |h20,40Z|<0.020, |h10,30γ|<0.23, and |h20,40γ|<0.019 for Λ=1000GeV. © 2005 The American Physical Society
Investigating the Near-Infrared Properties of Planetary Nebula II. Medium Resolution Spectra
We present medium-resolution (R~700) near-infrared (lambda = 1 - 2.5 micron)
spectra of a sample of planetary nebulae (PNe). A narrow slit was used which
sampled discrete locations within the nebulae; observations were obtained at
one or more positions in the 41 objects included in the survey. The PN spectra
fall into one of four general categories: H I emission line-dominated PNe, H I
and H_2 emission line PNe, H_2-dominated PNe, and continuum-dominated PNe.
These categories correlate with morphological type, with the elliptical PNe
falling into the first group, and the bipolar PNe primarily in the H_2 and
continuum emission groups. Other spectral features were observed in all
categories, such as continuum emission from the central star, C_2, CN, and CO
emission, and warm dust continuum emission.
Molecular hydrogen was detected for the first time in four PNe. An excitation
analysis was performed using the H_2 line ratios for all of the PN spectra in
the survey where a sufficient number of lines were observed. One unexpected
result from this analysis is that the H_2 is excited by absorption of
ultraviolet photons in most of the PNe surveyed, although for several PNe in
our survey collisional excitation in moderate velocity shocks plays an
important role. The correlation between bipolar morphology and H_2 emission has
been strengthened with the new detections of H_2 in this survey.Comment: 13 pages, 8 tables, 33 figure
Intra-arterial chemoradiation for T3-4 oral cavity cancer: Treatment outcomes in comparison to oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Surgery followed by radiotherapy is the standard of care for resectable locally advanced oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We report the treatment outcomes of patients with T3-T4 SCC of the oral cavity treated with chemoradiation, an alternative approach.</p> <p>Patients and methods</p> <p>From a series of 240 patients with stage III-IV carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract who were treated consecutively according to the RADPLAT protocol, a subset analysis of 155 patients with T3-T4 SCC (Oral cavity SCC N = 22, oropharynx SCC N = 94 and hypopharynx SCC N = 39), was performed. The goal was to test the hypothesis that oral cavity SCC treated with chemoradiation has similar outcomes to the two comparison sites.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>With a median follow-up of 58 months, local disease control was 69% and the overall survival was 37%. In comparison, local disease control for the oropharynx and hypopharynx groups was 86% and 79% respectively. The overall survival rate for the oropharyngeal and hypopharyngeal groups were 41% and 6% respectively</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Patients with locally advanced oral cavity cancer treated with the chemoradiation protocol RADPLAT have outcomes that are equal or better compared to patients with similar disease involving the oropharynx and hypopharynx</p
Search for Large Extra Dimensions in Dielectron and Diphoton Production
We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in ppbar
collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector, using
events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good
agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large
extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95%
confidence level, on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 TeV and 1.4 TeV for
