El modelo turístico de Benidorm: singularidad y retos de futuro

Este trabajo analiza la singularidad del modelo turístico de Benidorm, los indicadores básicos del destino y las claves de su evolución reciente. A partir de este análisis se plantean los retos de futuro que afronta Benidorm, vinculados a tres ámbitos relacionados: la interacción de los factores globales del mercado turístico con la acción de los agentes locales; la proactividad y capacidad de respuesta del destino; y la protección y proyección de los valores del modelo urbano-turístico de Benidorm.This paper analyzes the singularity of the Benidorm tourism model, the basic indicators of the destination and the key factors that explain its recent evolution. From this analysis, the future challenges of Benidorm are identified. Dynamic Evolution and Path Dependence in Coastal Tourist Destinations: The Role and the Perception of the Local Agents from a Comparative Point of View

Los modelos que describen la evolución de los destinos turísticos e interpretan el turismo litoral como un proceso global, centro-periferia, han restado importancia a la diversidad de situaciones locales y al papel de los agentes como pieza clave de la evolución de los destinos. Este artículo analiza el papel de los agentes locales en la evolución de los destinos en el marco de los modelos evolutivos tradicionales y de las nuevas contribuciones teóricas en torno al concepto de destino y sus dinámicas de transformación. El estudio teórico se complementa con un estudio cualitativo primario con entrevistas en profundidad realizadas con agentes locales en Balneario Camboriú-Brasil y Benidorm-España. Desde el punto de vista de la teoría de la dependencia de la trayectoria los dos destinos presentan dinámicas diferentes donde destaca la importancia de la percepción y el papel de los stakeholders para entender la evolución de los destinos turísticos. La interpretación de la madurez de los destinos turísticos como un proceso dinámico se adapta mejor a la evolución de los destinos comparados. Desde esta perspectiva, la singularidad de cada destino turístico es definitivamente importante, y no se puede separar de la interacción global-local y de la relevancia de las dinámicas co-evolutivas.Models that describe the evolution of the tourist destinations and the interpretation of coastal tourism as a global, central-peripheral process have played down the importance of the diversity of the local situations and the role of the agents as a key part of the evolution of the tourist destinations. This paper analyses the role of the local agents into the destinations evolution within the context of the traditional evolutionary models and the new theoretical contributions concerning to the tourist destination concept and its transformation. The theoretical study is complemented by a primary qualitative study with in-depth interviews held with local agents in Balneário Camboriú-Brazil and Benidorm -Spain. The different path of these two destinations explain the typical processes of the path dependence and point out the importance of the perception and the role of the stakeholders to understand the evolution of the tourist destinations. The interpretation of the maturity of the tourist destinations as a dynamic process adapts better to the evolution of the two tourist destinations compared. From this perspective, the uniqueness of each tourist destination is definitely important, and it cannot be separated from the global-local interaction and the relevance of the co-evolutionary dynamics

Towards a conceptualisation of smart tourists and their role within the smart destination scenario

‘Smart tourism’ and ‘smart destinations’ have been gaining attention as new frameworks within which to understand the impact the latest information and communication technologies (ICTs) have on the relationship between businesses, destinations and tourists. However, there is a crucial element of the smart tourism ecosystem that has been rather neglected in research hitherto: the tourists themselves. By acknowledging a shift in tourists’ behaviour due to the advent of disruptive factors, this paper conceptualises the recently emerged notion of ‘the smart tourist’. This new type of tourist is profiled through a description of their attitudes and behaviours, and their role within the smart destination scenario is depicted. By taking a consumer-centric perspective and framing the conceptualisation within the relevant theories, this paper contributes to the current body of knowledge on tourism in a highly technological context and facilitates bridging smart tourism theoretical foundations with empirical research. The observed transformation in tourists’ behaviour and its encapsulation in the smart tourist conceptualisation reveal critical managerial implications for both destination management organisations and businesses in the rapidly changing smart tourism ecosystem.Research carried out within the project ‘Analysis of planning processes applied to smart cities and smart tourism destinations. Sustainability and resilience of coastal tourist destinations: notes from the smart destinations approach

Con la crisis provocada por la COVID-19 el concepto de resiliencia ha ganado importancia en el sector turístico, uno de los más afectados. Esta pausa ha provocado que se plantee un cambio de modelo basado en la sostenibilidad donde el modelo de Destinos Turísticos Inteligentes (DTI) aparecen como los principales beneficiados de esta crisis, ya que consiguen superar el objetivo del crecimiento y tienen un enfoque de planificación y gestión directamente relacionado la sostenibilidad del sector turístico. En este trabajo se pretende, mediante el análisis de diversos indicadores, caracterizar la relación entre sostenibilidad y resiliencia, analizar la contribución del modelo DTI a la sostenibilidad, identificar su posibles limitaciones, e identificar nuevas posibilidades para hacer más resilientes los destinos. Evolucionar hacia destinos más inteligentes requiere más atención que no unos simples indicadores y la interrelación de diferentes dimensiones: ambiental, sociocultural,… que junto con la incorporación de los ODS 2030, nos lleve hacia un modelo más integrado y sostenible.With the crisis caused by COVID-19, the concept of resilience has gained importance in the tourism sector, one of the most affected. This pause has provoked a change of model based on sustainability where the model of Smart Tourism Destinations (ITD) appear as the main beneficiaries of this crisis since they manage to overcome the objective of growth and have a planning and management approach contributing to the sustainability of the tourism sector and acting as a good example. This paper aims through the analysis of indicators to characterize the relationship between sustainability and resilience, to analyze the contribution of the DTI model to sustainability and its implications for becoming more resilient, as well as to identify limitations and identify new possibilities to make destinations more resilient. Evolving towards smarter destinations requires more attention than simple indicators and the interrelation of different dimensions: environmental, socio-cultural,... that together with the incorporation of the SDG 2030, will lead us towards a more integrated and sustainable model

Sostenibilidad inteligente: una nueva perspectiva en el debate del turismo sostenible

This work tries to contribute to closing the existing gap in the relationship between sustainability and smartness, patent both in the field of research and in the management of cities and tourist destinations. The points in common between the concepts of sustainability and smartness applied to the management of tourist destinations are analyzed, as well as the critical factors that hinder its practical application, as a starting point to move towards a synergistic model for sustainable tourism destinations, called Smart Sustainability. This proposal is based on a true governance of the destination and is aimed at taking advantage of the opportunities offered by information and communication technologies (ICTs) for a more efficient and sustainable management.Este trabajo trata de contribuir a cerrar la brecha existente en la relación entre sostenibilidad e inteligencia, patente tanto en el ámbito de la investigación como en el de la gestión de ciudades y destinos turísticos. Se analizan los puntos en común entre los conceptos de sostenibilidad e inteligencia aplicados a la gestión de los destinos turísticos, así como los factores críticos que dificultan su aplicación práctica, como punto de partida para avanzar hacia un modelo sinérgico para los destinos turísticos sostenibles e inteligentes, denominado "Smart Sustainability". Design and testing of a dynamic reactive signage network towards fire emergency evacuations

The loss of several lives happens in events of natural disasters, due to the strength of nature or the static evacuation routes that usually directs towards a unique exit pathway. This paper proposes the integration of technology tools such as servers and open-source sensors into a reactive signage network to provide an updated and dynamical emergency evacuation system focusing specifically on fire situations. This pilot project works using microcontrollers that capture and manages into a server the surrounding information, setting evacuation routes and behaving according to the Dijkstra algorithm allowing the identification of obstacles or possible incidents that occur spontaneously during an evacuation. This process sends updates to the server either the evacuation route keeps the same or if a modification is required based on the information provided by the sensors about different areas, warning the shortest path for evacuation using computer vision support

The evolution of consolidated coastal tourist destinations. Comparative analysis of Balneario Camboriu (Brazil) and Benidorm (Spain)

El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en estudiar la evolución de los destinos turísticos litorales consolidados a partir del análisis comparado entre Balneario Camboriú y Benidorm. Se trata de dos destinos localizados en contextos territoriales y turísticos diferentes, en los que se contrastan de manera empírica los indicadores de evolución de los destinos y se vinculan las dinámicas evolutivas con el modelo territorial-turístico resultante en cada destino. El análisis realizado permite contrastar los postulados de los modelos evolutivos clásicos (Butler, 1980) e incorporar los nuevos planteamientos de la geografía económica evolutiva. La investigación delimita cronológicamente los periodos de desarrollo de ambos destinos para identificar los factores con mayor incidencia en la evolución de los mismos. Una evolución marcada, fundamentalmente, por la ubicación geográfica, la planificación y gestión urbano-turística a diferentes escalas, la dependencia de determinados mercados emisores y la influencia de factores macroeconómicos. Un conjunto de factores interrelacionados que dibujan trayectorias dispares para los destinos analizados.The aim of this work is to study the evolution of coastal tourist destinations consolidated from a compared analysis between Balneario Camboriu y Benidorm. These two destinations located in different territorial and touristic contexts, in which are contrasted empirically indicators of destinations evolution and evolutionary dynamics are linked to the resulting land-tourism model in each destination. The analysis allows us to contrast the tenets of classical evolutionary models (Butler, 1980) and incorporate the new approaches of evolutionary economic geography. Research defines the chronological periods of development of both locations to identify factors with the greatest impact on their evolution. An evolution marked mainly by geographical location, urban and tourism planning and management at different scales, the dependence of certain source markets and the influence of macroeconomic factors. A set of interrelated factors that draw disparate paths to the destinations analyzed

Indicators to analyze the life cycle of coastal tourist destination

El turismo de sol y playa es el segmento que genera mayor flujo de turistas y representa un importante motor para el desarrollo de la actividad en muchos países. Sin embargo, la masificación, el deterioro ambiental, los cambios en la demanda y el aumento de la competencia han generado una preocupación por el futuro de los destinos consolidados de sol y playa. Para este análisis multi-casos se ha utilizado la investigación bibliográfica y se ha identificado la necesidad de conocer la evolución y situación actual de los destinos para planificar el futuro de la actividad, a la vez que se hacen imprescindibles herramientas que puedan ayudar a los planificadores a entender tales procesos y adoptar estrategias con mayores posibilidades de éxito, aumentando la competitividad de los destinos, y garantizando su sostenibilidad y la extensión del ciclo de vida.Sun and beach tourism is the segment that generates the biggest flow of tourism, and represents an important engine for the development of this activity in many countries. However, overcrowding, environmental damage, changes in demand, and increased competition have generated concern about the future of these consolidated sun and beach destinations. In this multi-case analysis a bibliographic research study was conducted: a need for knowledge in evolution and the resort’s current situation have been identified in order to plan future activity. At the same time, there is also a need for tools that can help planners understand certain processes and help them adopt strategies with higher possibilities of success in order to improve the competitiveness of destinations, and also to guarantee the sustainability and extension of its life cycle

La gestión administrativa y fomento de la capacidad analítica en estudiantes de la facultad de Administración de Empresas Corporación Universitaria de la Costa, C.U.C.

La presente investigación surge de conversaciones informales sostenidas entre docentes de la facultad de administración de empresas de la Corporación Universitaria de la Costa, a propósito de la necesidad de una mayor capacidad analítica, crítica o reflexiva de sus estudiantes; necesidad que se hace más evidente al conocerse el aporte contemporáneo de los tratadistas de tal disciplina, aludiendo en particular a lo improcedente de formar administradores tecnócratas, como en cambio ocurriera durante buena parte del siglo XX. Este profesional debe hoy disponer de una base amplia de conocimientos propios, interdisciplinares y de fundamentación, ya que para enfrentar con garantía de éxito determinadas problemáticas, es indispensable trasladarse a diferentes planos de la realidad social, algunos de los cuales les son por naturaleza ajenos.The present investigation arises from informal conversations held between professors of the Faculty of Business Administration of the Corporación Universitaria de la Costa, regarding the need for a greater analytical, critical or reflective capacity of their students; A need that becomes more evident when the contemporary contribution of the writers of this discipline is known, alluding in particular to the inappropriateness of training technocratic administrators, as happened during much of the 20th century. Today this professional must have a broad base of their own, interdisciplinary and foundational knowledge, since in order to face certain problems with a guarantee of success, it is essential to move to different levels of social reality, some of which are alien by nature
