On Two-Body Decays of A Scalar Glueball

We study two body decays of a scalar glueball. We show that in QCD a spin-0 pure glueball (a state only with gluons) cannot decay into a pair of light quarks if chiral symmetry holds exactly, i.e., the decay amplitude is chirally suppressed. However, this chiral suppression does not materialize itself at the hadron level such as in decays into π+π−\pi^+\pi^- and K+K−K^+K^-, because in perturbative QCD the glueball couples to two (but not one) light quark pairs that hadronize to two mesons. Using QCD factorization based on an effective Lagrangian, we show that the difference of hadronization into ππ\pi\pi and KKKK already leads to a large difference between Br(π+π−){\rm Br} (\pi^+\pi^-) and Br(K+K−){\rm Br}(K^+K^-), even the decay amplitude is not chirally suppressed. Moreover, the small ratio of R=Br(ππ)/Br(KKˉ)R={\rm Br}(\pi\pi)/{\rm Br}(K\bar K) of f0(1710)f_0(1710) measured in experiment does not imply f0(1710)f_0(1710) to be a pure glueball. With our results it is helpful to understand the partonic contents if Br(ππ){\rm Br}(\pi\pi) or Br(KKˉ){\rm Br}(K\bar K) is measured reliably.Comment: revised versio

    Observation of Two New N* Peaks in J/psi -> ppi−nˉp pi^- \bar n and pˉπ+n\bar p\pi^+n Decays

The πN\pi N system in decays of J/ψ→NˉNπJ/\psi\to\bar NN\pi is limited to be isospin 1/2 by isospin conservation. This provides a big advantage in studying N∗→πNN^*\to \pi N compared with πN\pi N and γN\gamma N experiments which mix isospin 1/2 and 3/2 for the πN\pi N system. Using 58 million J/ψJ/\psi decays collected with the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/ψ→pπ−nˉ+c.c.J/\psi \to p \pi^- \bar n + c.c. events are obtained. Besides two well known N∗N^* peaks at 1500 MeV and 1670 MeV, there are two new, clear N∗N^* peaks in the pπp\pi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV and 2030 MeV. They are the first direct observation of the N∗(1440)N^*(1440) peak and a long-sought "missing" N∗N^* peak above 2 GeV in the πN\pi N invariant mass spectrum. A simple Breit-Wigner fit gives the mass and width for the N∗(1440)N^*(1440) peak as 1358±6±161358\pm 6 \pm 16 MeV and 179±26±50179\pm 26\pm 50 MeV, and for the new N∗N^* peak above 2 GeV as 2068±3−40+152068\pm 3^{+15}_{-40} MeV and 165±14±40165\pm 14\pm 40 MeV, respectively

A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters

Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons, pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)= (2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)= (97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    In a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/ψ→γηc\psi\to\gamma\eta_c is observed in five different decay channels: γK+K−π+π−\gamma K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-, γπ+π−π+π−\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, γK±KS0π∓\gamma K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp (with KS0→π+π−K^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-), γϕϕ\gamma \phi\phi (with ϕ→K+K−\phi\to K^+K^-) and γppˉ\gamma p\bar{p}. From a combined fit of all five channels, we determine the mass and full-width of ηc\eta_c to be mηc=2977.5±1.0(stat.)±1.2(syst.)m_{\eta_c}=2977.5\pm1.0 ({stat.})\pm1.2 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2 and Γηc=17.0±3.7(stat.)±7.4(syst.)\Gamma_{\eta_c} = 17.0\pm3.7 ({stat.})\pm7.4 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and 4 table. Observation of the decay \psip\rar\kstark

Using 14 million ψ(2S)\psi(2S) events collected with the BESII detector, branching fractions of \psip\rar\kstarkpm and \kstarknn are determined to be: \calB(\psip\rar\kstarkpm)=(2.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7}\pm0.4)\times 10^{-5} and \calB(\psip\rar\kstarknn)=(13.3^{+2.4}_{-2.7}\pm1.9)\times 10^{-5}. The results confirm the violation of the "12%" rule for these two decay channels with higher precision. A large isospin violation between the charged and neutral modes is observed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    BESII Detector Simulation

A Monte Carlo program based on Geant3 has been developed for BESII detector simulation. The organization of the program is outlined, and the digitization procedure for simulating the response of various sub-detectors is described. Comparisons with data show that the performance of the program is generally satisfactory.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, uses elsart.cls, to be submitted to NIM

Search for the Lepton Flavor Violation Processes J/ψ→J/\psi \to μτ\mu\tau and eτe\tau

The lepton flavor violation processes J/ψ→μτJ/\psi \to \mu\tau and eτe\tau are searched for using a sample of 5.8×107\times 10^7 J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BESII detector. Zero and one candidate events, consistent with the estimated background, are observed in J/ψ→μτ,τ→eνˉeντJ/\psi \to \mu\tau, \tau\to e\bar\nu_e\nu_{\tau} and J/ψ→eτ,τ→μνˉμντJ/\psi\to e\tau, \tau\to\mu\bar\nu_{\mu}\nu_{\tau} decays, respectively. Upper limits on the branching ratios are determined to be Br(J/ψ→μτ)<2.0×10−6Br(J/\psi\to\mu\tau)<2.0 \times 10^{-6} and Br(J/ψ→eτ)<8.3×10−6Br(J/\psi \to e\tau) < 8.3 \times10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level (C.L.).Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure

    Study of J/ψ→ωK+K−J/\psi \to \omega K^+K^-

    Get PDF
New data are presented on J/ψ→ωK+K−J/\psi \to \omega K^+K^- from a sample of 58M J/ψJ/\psi events in the upgraded BES II detector at the BEPC. There is a conspicuous signal for f0(1710)→K+K−f_0(1710) \to K^+K^- and a peak at higher mass which may be fitted with f2(2150)→KKˉf_2(2150) \to K\bar K. From a combined analysis with ωπ+π−\omega \pi ^+ \pi ^- data, the branching ratio BR(f0(1710)→ππ)/BR(f0(1710)→KKˉ)BR(f_0(1710)\to\pi\pi)/BR(f_0(1710) \to K\bar K) is <0.11< 0.11 at the 95% confidence level.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. Direct Measurement of the Pseudoscalar Decay Constant fD+

The absolute branching fraction of D+→μ+νD^+ \to \mu^+ \nu has been directly measured by an analysis of a data sample of about 33 pb−1{\rm pb^{-1}} collected around s=3.773\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV with the BES-II at the BEPC. At these energies, D−D^- meson is produced in pair as e+e−→D+D−e^+e^-\to D^{+} D^{-}. A total of 5321±149±1605321 \pm 149 \pm 160 D−D^- mesons are reconstructed from this data set. In the recoil side of the tagged D−D^- mesons, 2.67±1.742.67\pm1.74 purely leptonic decay events of D+→μ+νD^+ \to \mu^+ \nu are observed. This yields a branching fraction of BF(D+→μ+νμ)=(0.122−0.053+0.111±0.010)BF(D^+ \to \mu^+ \nu_{\mu}) = (0.122^{+0.111}_{-0.053}\pm 0.010)%, and a corresponding pseudoscalar decay constant fD+=(371−119+129±25)f_{D^+}=(371^{+129}_{-119}\pm 25) MeV.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to Physics Letters B in October, 200
