    Vehicle Classification in Traffic Environments Using the Growing Neural Gas

    Traffic monitoring is one of the most popular applications of automated video surveillance. Classification of the vehicles into types is important in order to provide the human traffic controllers with updated information about the characteristics of the traffic flow, which facilitates their decision making process. In this work, a video surveillance system is proposed to carry out such classification. First of all, a feature extraction process is carried out to obtain the most significant features of the detected vehicles. After that, a set of Growing Neural Gas neural networks is employed to determine their types. A qualitative and quantitative assessment of the proposal is carried out on a set of benchmark traffic video sequences, with favorable results.Universidad de MĂĄlaga.     Reference ranges of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in capillary blood in the Spanish population

    Cross-sectional analysis describing HbA1c reference values by sex and age in a randomly selected Mediterranean general population sample. Using two methods, Point-of-Care systems and centralized laboratory, results show that HbA1c values increase with age. Almost half of the sample aged 65 years or older had median values >5.7% (prediabetes cut-off point)

    mTOR is a Key Protein Involved in the Metabolic Effects of Simple Sugars

    One of the most important threats to global human health is the increasing incidences of metabolic pathologies (including obesity, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease), which is paralleled by increasing consumptions of hypercaloric diets enriched in simple sugars. The challenge is to identify the metabolic pathways affected by the excessive consumption of these dietary components when they are consumed in excess, to unravel the molecular mechanisms leading to metabolic pathologies and identify novel therapeutic targets to manage them. Mechanistic (mammalian) target of rapamycin (mTOR) has emerged as one of the key molecular nodes that integrate extracellular signals, such as energy status and nutrient availability, to trigger cell responses that could lead to the above-mentioned diseases through the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism. By activating mTOR signalling, excessive consumption of simple sugars (such as fructose and glucose), could modulate hepatic gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis and fatty acid uptake and catabolism and thus lipid deposition in the liver.     Subsampling OFDM-based ultrasonic data communication through metallic channels for monitoring of cargo containers

    An enhanced ultrasonic communication system based on piezoelectric transducers for monitoring of goods in cargo containers is presented. The proposed system consists of several sensors placed inside the container, whose data are collected and transmitted outside it. Data transmission is carried out by an ultrasonic communication channel, in order to avoid drilling the wall of the container. The proposed data communication system is based on the transmission of a 128-OFDM signal. This modulation has been chosen due to its robustness to channels with frequency-selective fading and its spectrum efficiency. In order to increase the signal bandwidth and to reduce the power consumption at the internal node (transmitter), the proposed system exploits the non-linearity of the metallic channel to transmit at higher resonance frequencies. Moreover, power consumption at the external node (receiver) is reduced by using a subsampling based receiver, which allows its implementation by low-cost electronics.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under Projects TEC2016-80396-C2-2-R and TEC2016-80396-C2-1-

    Hypothalamic endocannabinoids inversely correlate with the development of diet-induced obesity in male and female mice

    The endocannabinoid (eCB) system regulates energy homeostasis and is linked to obesity development. However, the exact dynamic and regulation of eCBs in the hypothalamus during obesity progression remain incompletely described and understood. Our study examined the time course of responses in two hypothalamic eCBs, 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA), in male and female mice during diet-induced obesity and explored the association of eCB levels with changes in brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis and body weight. We fed mice a high-fat diet (HFD), which induced a transient increase (substantial at 7 days) in hypothalamic eCBs, followed by a progressive decrease to basal levels with a long-term HFD. This transient rise at early stages of obesity is considered a physiologic compensatory response to BAT thermogenesis, which is activated by diet surplus. The eCB dynamic was sexually dimorphic: hypothalamic eCBs levels were higher in female mice, who became obese at later time points than males. The hypothalamic eCBs time course positively correlated with thermogenesis activation, but negatively matched body weight, leptinemia, and circulating eCB levels. Increased expression of eCB-synthetizing enzymes accompanied the transient hypothalamic eCB elevation. Icv injection of eCB did not promote BAT thermogenesis; however, administration of thermogenic molecules, such as central leptin or a peripheral ÎČ3-adrenoreceptor agonist, induced a significant increase in hypothalamic eCBs, suggesting a directional link from BAT thermogenesis to hypothalamic eCBs.     Fructose effects on human health: Molecular insights from experimental models

Fructose is widely used as a sweetener in the food and beverage industry, either as an integrant of the sucrose molecule or as a component of high fructose corn syrups. The consumption of fructose in beverages is especially dangerous, as the process of energy compensation by reduction in the ingestion of other foods does not work equally well with liquid than solid foods. Besides, fructose is the carbohydrate with the highest ability to induce hypertriglyceridemia, due to a marked increase in lipogenesis compared with glucose.     Incidence of peripheral arterial disease in the ARTPER population cohort after 5 years of follow-up

    To know the epidemiology (prevalence, incidence, progression and morbidity and mortality associated) of peripheral artery disease in general population and the factors associated with this progression is essential to know the evolution of atherosclerosis and develop preventive strategies. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of PAD after 5 years of follow-up population-based cohort ARTPER, and the evolution of Ankle brachial Index (ABI) in this period. Peripheral artery disease incidence analysis after 5 years of follow-up of 3786 subjects > 50 years old. Peripheral artery disease incident when the second cross section Ankle brachial Index was <0.9 in any of the lower limbs, with normal baseline (0.9 to 1.4). Between 2012 and 2013 2762 individuals (77 % participation) were re-examined. Finally analyzed 2256 subjects (after excluding pathological Ankle brachial Index) followed for 4.9 years (range 3.8 to 5.8 years), totalling 11,106 person-years. Peripheral artery disease 95 new cases were detected, representing an incidence of 4.3 % at 5 years and 8.6 per 1000 person-years (95 % CI 6.9 to 10.5) being higher in men (10.2, 95 % CI 7.4 to 13.5) than in women (7.5, 95 % CI 5.5 to 9.9). Linear correlation between the baseline Ankle brachial Index and the second cross section was low (r = 0.23). The incidence of peripheral artery disease in ARTPER cohort was 8.6 cases per 1000 person-years, being higher in men, especially <65 years. The correlation between two measures Ankle brachial Index after 5 years of follow-up was low. One might consider whether Ankle brachial Index repeated measures could improve the correlation

    Liquid fructose downregulates SIRT1 expression and activity and impairs the oxidation of fatty acids in rat and human liver cells

    Fructose ingestion is associated with the production of hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia. For fructose to attain these effects in rats, simultaneous induction of fatty acid synthesis and inhibition of fatty acid oxidation is required. We aimed to determine the mechanism involved in the inhibition of fatty acid oxidation by fructose and whether this effect occurs also in human liver cells. Female rats were supplemented or not with liquid fructose (10% w/v) for 7 or 14 days; rat (FaO) and human (HepG2) hepatoma cells, and human hepatocytes were incubated with fructose 25 mM for 24 h. The expression and activity of the enzymes and transcription factors relating to fatty acid ÎČ-oxidation were evaluated. Fructose inhibited the activity of fatty acid ÎČ-oxidation only in livers of 14-day fructose-supplemented rats, as well as the expression and activity of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α (PPARα). Similar results were observed in FaO and HepG2 cells and human hepatocytes. PPARα downregulation was not due to an osmotic effect or to an increase in protein-phosphatase 2A activity caused by fructose. Rather, it was related to increased content in liver of inactive and acetylated peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma coactivator 1α, due to a reduction in sirtuin 1 expression and activity. In conclusion, fructose inhibits liver fatty acid oxidation by reducing PPARα expression and activity, both in rat and human liver cells, by a mechanism involving sirtuin 1 down-regulation

    The addition of liguid fructose to a Western-type diet in LDL-R-/- mice induces liver inflammation and fibrogenesis markers without disrupting insulin receptor signalling after an insulin challenge

    A high consumption of fat and simple sugars, especially fructose, has been related to the development of insulin resistance, but the mechanisms involved in the effects of these nutrients are not fully understood. This study investigates the effects of a Western-type diet and liquid fructose supplementation, alone and combined, on insulin signalling and inflammation in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor-deficient mice (LDL-R−/−). LDL-R−/− mice were fed chow or Western diet ±15% fructose solution for 12 weeks. Plasma glucose and insulin, and the expression of genes related to inflammation in the liver and visceral white adipose tissue (vWAT), were analysed. V-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homolog-2 (Akt) activation was measured in the liver of the mice after a single injection of saline or insulin. None of the dietary interventions caused inflammation in vWAT, whereas the Western diet induced hepatic inflammation, which was further enhanced by liquid fructose, leading also to a significant increase in fibrogenesis markers. However, there was no change in plasma glucose or insulin, or insulin-induced Akt phosphorylation. In conclusion, hepatic inflammation and fibrogenesis markers induced by a Western diet supplemented with liquid fructose in LDL-R−/− mice are not associated with a significant impairment of hepatic insulin signalling

    La imagen y la narrativa como herramientas para el abordaje psicosocial en escenarios de violencia. Departamentos de la Guajira, Cesar, Santander y Magdalena.El enfoque narrativo en la psicologĂ­a contemporĂĄnea ha logrado un camino reflexivo significativo en los abordajes terapĂ©uticos y psicosociales de violencias sistemĂĄticas. En el caso colombiano es importante reconocer sus aportes desde los marcos diversos y contextuales de nuestra realidad socio-polĂ­tica. De aquĂ­ que para tener un acercamiento a estos desarrollos conceptuales el grupo colaborativo realizarĂĄ una tarea haciendo un anĂĄlisis de diferentes relatos de violencia socio-polĂ­tica en Colombia, donde abordaremos y nos acercaremos a las subjetividades inmersas en estos contextos. La narrativa busca un acercamiento respetuoso, de la intervenciĂłn y el trabajo comunitario centrando a la persona como expertos en su vida. Viendo el problema separado de las personas y asume que las personas tienen muchas habilidades, competencias, convicciones, valores, compromisos y capacidades que los asistirĂĄ a reducir la influencia del problema en sus vidas. Las historias o narrativas son importantes y para la terapia narrativa, la palabra historia o narrativa significa: eventos, ligados en una secuencia, a travĂ©s del tiempo y de acuerdo con un tema. En el siguiente informe, se darĂĄ a conocer la percepciĂłn del grupo colaborativo sobre los relatos de violencia y esperanza en Colombia desde la perspectiva narrativa, del mismo modo se realizarĂĄn preguntas encaminadas aplicadas a cada relato en sus diferentes etapas, por Ășltimo, se realizarĂĄn reflexiones sobre su abordaje y propondrĂĄ tres estrategias de acompañamiento psicosocial para el caso de PandurĂ­.The narrative approach in contemporary psychology has achieved a significant reflective path in the therapeutic and psychosocial approaches of systematic violence. In the Colombian case it is important to recognize their contributions from the diverse and contextual frameworks of our socio-political reality. Hence, to have an approach to these conceptual developments, the collaborative group will carry out a task by analyzing different accounts of socio-political violence in Colombia, where we will approach and approach the subjectivities immersed in these contexts. The narrative seeks a respectful approach, intervention and community work focusing the person as experts in their lives. Seeing the problem separate from people and assumes that people have many skills, competencies, convictions, values, commitments and capabilities that will help them reduce the influence of the problem in their lives. Stories or narratives are important and for narrative therapy, the word history or narrative means: events, linked in a sequence, through time and according to a theme. In the following report, the perception of the collaborative group about the narratives of violence and hope in Colombia will be made known from the narrative perspective. In the same way, guided questions will be made applied to each story in its different stages. Finally, reflections will be made on its approach and propose three strategies of psychosocial accompaniment for the case of PandurĂ­
