Rate and time dependent behavior of structural adhesives
Studies on two adhesives (Metlbond 1113 and 1113-2) identified as having applications in the bonding of composite materials are presented. Constitutive equations capable of describing changes in material behavior with strain rate are derived from various theoretical approaches. It is shown that certain unique relationships exist between these approaches. It is also shown that the constitutive equation derived from mechanical models can be used for creep and relaxation loading. A creep to failure phenomenon is shown to exist and is correlated with a delayed yield equation proposed by Crochet. Loading-unloading results are presented and are shown to correlate well with the proposed form of the loading-unloading equations for the modified Bingham model. Experimental results obtained for relaxation tests above and below the glass transition temperature are presented. It is shown that the adhesives obey the time-temperature superposition principle
The Effect of Powerpoint and Nongraphic Paired List Presentations on the Vocabulary Production and Recognition of Elementary-Level College French Students
This study investigates the effect of presenting images via PowerPoint (PPT) and nongraphic paired lists to teach vocabulary. In this study nongraphic paired list (PL) refers to a list of French words paired with their English equivalent. The study, conducted with 38 elementary-level college students, examined their recall performance for written production and visual recognition of French vocabulary words. Students were taught French vocabulary via PPT and nongraphic PL presentations. Quantitative results indicated a significant difference between participants’ mean immediate test scores favoring the PPT condition for both written production and visual recognition. The study also investigated participants’ instructional perceptions of and preferences for either approach in being taught French vocabulary. Qualitative findings revealed that students expressed a marked preference for learning vocabulary with the PPT approach
Quiet in the Operating Room! Team STEPPS and OR Distractions
Background and Objective:
From the moment that a patient enters the operating room to the time that they are brought to the post anesthesia care unit, a distraction has the potential to lead to an adverse outcome for the patient. During the critical portions of the surgery, it is even more important for all members of the operating staff to be focused and engaging in safe practices. Distractions in the operating room can hinder safe communication and potentially endanger patient safety. Team training has been shown to both improve team communication and reduce distractions.

Identifying the attributes of a profession in the practice and regulation of fire safety engineering
Fire Safety Engineering is often implemented within a framework that requires a recognized and recognizable profession. This article reviews the current state of various attributes that define Fire Safety Engineering as a profession. It is argued that: 1) reliance on prescriptive solutions opens the domain to practitioners that do not possess the required specialist knowledge; 2) the fire safety engineering process is often triggered through non-compliances to individual prescriptive provisions, negatively impacting on the discipline's professional authority; 3) the discipline operates in a manner that exposes it to challenges of its ethical code; and 4), the lack of a well-defined accreditation framework challenges the professional culture. The resulting environment favours a customer relationship between those commissioning the work and the Fire Safety Engineer, rather than the client relationship necessary for professional practise.
Most engineering disciplines respond to failures by formalisation of the profession around its duty of care to society. Conversely, in Fire Safety Engineering such responses have focused on regulation. Recent incidents are a significant impetus and opportunity for the fire safety profession to better formalize itself

Structural probing of the HIV-1 polypurine tract RNA:DNA hybrid using classic nucleic acid ligands
The interactions of archetypical nucleic acid ligands with the HIV-1 polypurine tract (PPT) RNA:DNA hybrid, as well as analogous DNA:DNA, RNA:RNA and swapped hybrid substrates, were used to probe structural features of the PPT that contribute to its specific recognition and processing by reverse transcriptase (RT). Results from intercalative and groove-binding ligands indicate that the wild-type PPT hybrid does not contain any strikingly unique groove geometries and/or stacking arrangements that might contribute to the specificity of its interaction with RT. In contrast, neomycin bound preferentially and selectively to the PPT near the 5′(rA)4:(dT)4 tract and the 3′ PPT-U3 junction. Nuclear magnetic resonance data from a complex between HIV-1 RT and the PPT indicate RT contacts within the same regions highlighted on the PPT by neomycin. These observations, together with the fact that the sites are correctly spaced to allow interaction with residues in the ribonuclease H (RNase H) active site and thumb subdomain of the p66 RT subunit, suggest that despite the long cleft employed by RT to make contact with nucleic acids substrates, these sites provide discrete binding units working in concert to determine not only specific PPT recognition, but also its orientation on the hybrid structure
Can we continue research in splenectomized dogs? Mycoplasma haemocanis: Old problem - New insight
We report the appearance of a Mycoplasma haemocanis infection in laboratory dogs, which has been reported previously, yet, never before in Europe. Outbreak of the disease was triggered by a splenectomy intended to prepare the dogs for a hemorrhagic shock study. The clinical course of the dogs was dramatic including anorexia and hemolytic anemia. Treatment included allogeneic transfusion, prednisone, and oxytetracycline. Systematic follow-up (n=12, blood smears, antibody testing and specific polymerase chain reaction) gives clear evidence that persistent eradication of M. haemocanis is unlikely. We, therefore, had to abandon the intended shock study. In the absence of effective surveillance and screening for M. haemocanis, the question arises whether it is prudent to continue shock research in splenectomized dogs. Copyright (C) 2004 S. Scintillator counters with WLS fiber/MPPC readout for the side muon range detector (SMRD)of the T2K experiment
The T2K neutrino experiment at J-PARC uses a set of near detectors to measure
the properties of an unoscillated neutrino beam and neutrino interaction
cross-sections. One of the sub-detectors of the near-detector complex, the side
muon range detector (SMRD), is described in the paper. The detector is designed
to help measure the neutrino energy spectrum, to identify background and to
calibrate the other detectors. The active elements of the SMRD consist of 0.7
cm thick extruded scintillator slabs inserted into air gaps of the UA1 magnet
yokes. The readout of each scintillator slab is provided through a single WLS
fiber embedded into a serpentine shaped groove. Two Hamamatsu multi-pixel
avalanche photodiodes (MPPC's) are coupled to both ends of the WLS fiber. This
design allows us to achieve a high MIP detection efficiency of greater than
99%. A light yield of 25-50 p.e./MIP, a time resolution of about 1 ns and a
spatial resolution along the slab better than 10 cm were obtained for the SMRD

The NANOGrav 11-Year Data Set: Limits on Gravitational Waves from Individual Supermassive Black Hole Binaries
Observations indicate that nearly all galaxies contain supermassive black
holes (SMBHs) at their centers. When galaxies merge, their component black
holes form SMBH binaries (SMBHBs), which emit low-frequency gravitational waves
(GWs) that can be detected by pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). We have searched the
recently-released North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves
(NANOGrav) 11-year data set for GWs from individual SMBHBs in circular orbits.
As we did not find strong evidence for GWs in our data, we placed 95\% upper
limits on the strength of GWs from such sources as a function of GW frequency
and sky location. We placed a sky-averaged upper limit on the GW strain of at nHz. We also developed a
technique to determine the significance of a particular signal in each pulsar
using ``dropout' parameters as a way of identifying spurious signals in
measurements from individual pulsars. We used our upper limits on the GW strain
to place lower limits on the distances to individual SMBHBs. At the
most-sensitive sky location, we ruled out SMBHBs emitting GWs with
nHz within 120 Mpc for , and
within 5.5 Gpc for . We also determined that
there are no SMBHBs with emitting
GWs in the Virgo Cluster. Finally, we estimated the number of potentially
detectable sources given our current strain upper limits based on galaxies in
Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and merger rates from the Illustris
cosmological simulation project. Only 34 out of 75,000 realizations of the
local Universe contained a detectable source, from which we concluded it was
unsurprising that we did not detect any individual sources given our current
