Long sandwich modules for photon veto detectors
Long lead-scintillator sandwich modules developed for the BNL experiment
KOPIO are described. The individual 4 m long module consists of 15 layers of 7
mm thick extruded scintillator and 15 layers of 1 mm lead absorber. Readout is
implemented via WLS fibers glued into grooves in a scintillator with 7 mm
spacing and viewed from both ends by the phototubes. Time resolution of 300 ps
for cosmic MIPs was obtained. Light output stability monitored for 2 years
shows no degradation beyond the measurement errors. A 4 m long C-bent sandwich
module was also manufactured and tested.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 1 tabl
Performance of a CsI(Tl) calorimeter in an experiment with stopped K+'s
The performance of the photon detector constructed for the search of
T-violation in the decay K^+ -> pi^0 mu^+ nu is presented. The specific
features of this detector consisting of 768 CsI(Tl) crystals with PIN
photodiode readout for high precision measurement of T-odd correlations in the
decays of positive kaons are considered.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, talk at the INSTR02 Conference, Novosibirsk,

Pinning down the kaon form factors in K^+ -> mu^+ nu_mu gamma decay
We find that the normal muon polarization in the decay K->mu nu_mu gamma is
very sensitive to the values of the kaon vector F_V and axial-vector F_A form
factors. It is shown that the ongoing KEK-E246 experiment can definitely
determine the signs of the sum of the form factors if their difference is fixed
from other considerations. This method can also verify the form factor values
and signs obtained from the K^+ -> l^+ nu_l e^+ e^- decays. A new experiment
with sensitivity to the normal and transverse muon polarizations of about 10^-4
will provide a unique possibility to determine the F_V and F_A values with a
few percent accuracy.Comment: revtex, 5 pages, 2 figures. Minor corrections made for the journal

Tochmarc Moméra as Echtra to the Otherworld
Tochmarc Moméra, “The Wooing of Moméra”, is a Middle Irish tale found solely in the Yellow Book of Lecan (TCD MS 1318). The tale features the voyage of Eógan Taídlech, legendary ancestor of the Eóganachta, to Spain where he marries Moméra, Spanish princess, and obtains a magical cloak. However, as Donald Meek observes in relation to Fráech’s journey to Lombardy (Táin Bó Fraích, and other "Fráech" texts: a study in thematic relationships, Part 1 (CMCS 7, 71)), “the original expedition may have been to the Otherworld, and not to any recognisable country.” Notably, the structure and stylistic features of Tochmarc Moméra suggest same connotations. From the typological point of view, this idea could be supported by other tales which explicitly concern the candidate's voyage to the Otherworld, as a place of legitimisation of his royal status, and focus either on his marriage or on supernatural objects he receives there (cf. Baile in Scáil, Echtra Chormaic, Echtra Airt maic Cuinn). This essay addresses motifs and stylistic devices used by an author while moulding this polysemantic narrative, and places Tochmarc Moméra in a broader context of Irish and international tales
