Fluctuations and Instabilities of Ferromagnetic Domain Wall pairs in an External Magnetic Field
Soliton excitations and their stability in anisotropic quasi-1D ferromagnets
are analyzed analytically. In the presence of an external magnetic field, the
lowest lying topological excitations are shown to be either soliton-soliton or
soliton-antisoliton pairs. In ferromagnetic samples of macro- or mesoscopic
size, these configurations correspond to twisted or untwisted pairs of Bloch
walls. It is shown that the fluctuations around these configurations are
governed by the same set of operators. The soliton-antisoliton pair has exactly
one unstable mode and thus represents a critical nucleus for thermally
activated magnetization reversal in effectively one-dimensional systems. The
soliton-soliton pair is stable for small external fields but becomes unstable
for large magnetic fields. From the detailed expression of this instability
threshold and an analysis of nonlocal demagnetizing effects it is shown that
the relative chirality of domain walls can be detected experimentally in thin
ferromagnetic films. The static properties of the present model are equivalent
to those of a nonlinear sigma-model with anisotropies. In the limit of large
hard-axis anisotropy the model reduces to a double sine-Gordon model.Comment: 15 pages RevTex 3.0 (twocolumn), 9 figures available on request, to

Kinks in the discrete sine-Gordon model with Kac-Baker long-range interactions
We study effects of Kac-Baker long-range dispersive interaction (LRI) between
particles on kink properties in the discrete sine-Gordon model. We show that
the kink width increases indefinitely as the range of LRI grows only in the
case of strong interparticle coupling. On the contrary, the kink becomes
intrinsically localized if the coupling is under some critical value.
Correspondingly, the Peierls-Nabarro barrier vanishes as the range of LRI
increases for supercritical values of the coupling but remains finite for
subcritical values. We demonstrate that LRI essentially transforms the internal
dynamics of the kinks, specifically creating their internal localized and
quasilocalized modes. We also show that moving kinks radiate plane waves due to
break of the Lorentz invariance by LRI.Comment: 11 pages (LaTeX) and 14 figures (Postscript); submitted to Phys. Rev.
Switching model with two habitats and a predator involving group defence
Switching model with one predator and two prey species is considered. The
prey species have the ability of group defence. Therefore, the predator will be
attracted towards that habitat where prey are less in number. The stability
analysis is carried out for two equilibrium values. The theoretical results are
compared with the numerical results for a set of values. The Hopf bifuracation
analysis is done to support the stability results
Transverse Energy per Charged Particle and Freeze-Out Criteria in Heavy-Ion Collisions
In relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions the transverse energy per charged
particle, E_T/N_ch, increases rapidly with beam energy and remains
approximately constant at about 800 MeV for beam energies from SPS to RHIC. It
is shown that the hadron resonance gas model describes the energy dependence,
as well as the lack of centrality dependence, qualitatively. The values of
E_T/N_ch are related to the chemical freeze-out criterium E/N about 1 GeV valid
for primordial hadrons.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Dynamics of the Hubbard model: a general approach by time dependent variational principle
We describe the quantum dynamics of the Hubbard model at semi-classical
level, by implementing the Time-Dependent Variational Principle (TDVP)
procedure on appropriate macroscopic wavefunctions constructed in terms of
su(2)-coherent states. Within the TDVP procedure, such states turn out to
include a time-dependent quantum phase, part of which can be recognized as
Berry's phase. We derive two new semi-classical model Hamiltonians for
describing the dynamics in the paramagnetic, superconducting, antiferromagnetic
and charge density wave phases and solve the corresponding canonical equations
of motion in various cases. Noticeably, a vortex-like ground state phase
dynamics is found to take place for U>0 away from half filling. Moreover, it
appears that an oscillatory-like ground state dynamics survives at the Fermi
surface at half-filling for any U. The low-energy dynamics is also exactly
solved by separating fast and slow variables. The role of the time-dependent
phase is shown to be particularly interesting in the ordered phases.Comment: ReVTeX file, 38 pages, to appear on Phys. Rev.
Electron transport in nanotube--molecular wire hybrids
We study contact effects on electron transport across a molecular wire
sandwiched between two semi-infinite (carbon) nanotube leads as a model for
nanoelectrodes. Employing the Landauer scattering matrix approach we find that
the conductance is very sensitive to parameters such as the coupling strength
and geometry of the contact. The conductance exhibits markedly different
behavior in the two limiting scenarios of single contact and multiple contacts
between the molecular wire and the nanotube interfacial atoms. In contrast to a
single contact the multiple-contact configuration acts as a filter selecting
single transport channels. It exhibits a scaling law for the conductance as a
function of coupling strength and tube diameter. We also observe an unusual
narrow-to-broad-to-narrow behavior of conductance resonances upon decreasing
the coupling.Comment: 4 pages, figures include
Dilepton Production at SPS-energy Heavy Ion Collisions
The production of dileptons is studied within a hadronic transport model. We
investigate the sensitivity of the dilepton spectra to the initial
configuration of the hadronic phase in a ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision.
Possible in medium correction due to the modifications of pions and the pion
form factor in a hadronic gas are discussed.Comment: Dedicated to Gerry Brown in honor of the 32nd celebration of his 39th

Signatures of Thermal Dilepton Radiation at RHIC
The properties of thermal dilepton production from heavy-ion collisions in
the RHIC energy regime are evaluated for invariant masses ranging from 0.5 to 3
GeV. Using an expanding thermal fireball to model the evolution through both
quark-gluon and hadronic phases various features of the spectra are addressed.
In the low-mass region, due to an expected large background, the focus is on
possible medium modifications of the narrow resonance structures from
and mesons, whereas in the intermediate-mass region the old idea of
identifying QGP radiation is reiterated including effects of chemical
under-saturation in the early stages of central Au+Au collisions.Comment: 17 pages ReVTeX including 16 figure

Electronic localization at mesoscopic length scales: different definitions of localization and contact effects in a heuristic DNA model
In this work we investigate the electronic transport along model DNA
molecules using an effective tight-binding approach that includes the backbone
on site energies. The localization length and participation number are examined
as a function of system size, energy dependence, and the contact coupling
between the leads and the DNA molecule. On one hand, the transition from an
diffusive regime to a localized regime for short systems is identified,
suggesting the necessity of a further length scale revealing the system borders
sensibility. On the other hand, we show that the lenght localization and
participation number, do not depended of system size and contact coupling in
the thermodynamic limit. Finally we discuss possible length dependent origins
for the large discrepancies among experimental results for the electronic
transport in DNA sample
