    Novi nalazi vrste Charybdis japonica (A. Milne-Edwards, 1861) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Portunidae) u Jadranskom moru

    Fifteen years after the first capture of a specimen of Charybdis japonica in the Adriatic Sea, we report the collection of two more specimens near the port of Ravenna. This swimming crab, native from the North Western Pacific, has already proved its invasive capacity in New Zealand coastal waters. Its possible establishment in the northern Adriatic lagoons may represent a treat for the local Manila clam fishery and aquaculture activities.Petnaest godina nakon prvog ulova primjerka Charybdis japonica u Jadranskom moru, izvješta- vamo o prikupljanju još dva primjerka u blizini luke Ravenna. Ovaj rak porijeklom iz sjeverozapadnog Pacifika, već je dokazao svoju invazivnu sposobnost u obalnim vodama Novog Zelanda. Njegovo moguće nastanjenje u lagunama sjevernog Jadrana moglo bi predstavljati bojazan za lokalne aktivnosti u ribarstvu i akvakulturi školjke Ruditapes philippinarum

    Better, But Not Sustainable: The Impacts of Switzerland’s Sector Agreement on Soy Production in Brazil

    The production and expansion of soy feed in Brazil generates various environmental and social harms. The vast majority of this soy is genetically modified (GM) and non-certified. But there is a small share of soy feed production that occurs under certification schemes stipulating social and environmental criteria, as well as a small share of production of non-genetically modified (non-GM) soy. These two production modes partly overlap. Based on a sector agreement, Switzerland exclusively imports certified non-GM soy feed. In the present article, we conduct a literature review to explore who drives this decision for non-GM soy feed and, more importantly, whether it has discernible sustainability impacts on the ground in production areas. Literature and data analysing the impacts of certified non-GM soy feed are scarce. Based on the scant but a little less scarce available data on certified soy, we conclude that the Swiss model represents an improvement, but is not truly sustainable. We recommend that more data be made available which enables robust linking of Swiss consumption to production in Brazil. Finally, we recommend conducting more research into how a sustainable Swiss feed–meat nexus could be designed

    Fisheries Bycatch of Chondrichthyes

    This chapter reviews the current state of knowledge about global chondrichthyes bycatch, including how the combination of biological characteristics of these species and the impact of different fishing methods reflect their vulnerability to bycatch. Specifically, it summarizes the present status of elasmobranchs and chimaeras bycatch worldwide. Following this, it illustrates the main ecological consequences behind such incidental captures. Hence, it provides a description of how chondrichthyes bycatch occurs across broad fishing gear categories. Moreover, it outlines potential mitigation options available to reduce bycatch. As such, the main technical measures tested and applied in different fishing practices are listed. In addition, an overview about which are the current management measures implemented at international level to ensure long-term conservation of cartilaginous fish is reported. Then, two case studies summarize how chondrichthyes bycatch occurred in some of the most exploited fishing areas. Finally, the chapter ends with relevant considerations about potential for new research needed to monitor and reduce chondrichthyes bycatch

    Effect of a lateral square-mesh panel on the catch pattern and catch efficiency in a Mediterranean bottom trawl fishery

    The current legal codends used in Mediterranean bottom trawl fisheries are at high risk of retaining undersized individuals of several commercial fish species. This entails that codends alone are unable to provide the desired exploitation pattern. A simple technological measure that potentially can provide higher release efficiency of undersized fish are Square-Mesh Panels (SMPs). SMPs are often applied in the upper section of the trawl belly, just ahead the codend. However, recent studies in the Mediterranean have demonstrated that SMPs mounted in this position provided limited release efficiency, because very few fish came into contact with their meshes. In attempt to improve SMPs efficiency in the Mediterranean bottom trawl fisheries, we applied them on the lateral sides of the last tapered section of the trawl belly, just ahead of the codend, and fitted two guiding panels in the trawl belly to enhance fish-SMP contact. We compared the catch performance of a standard commercial trawl with a 52 mm diamond-mesh codend and of a similar trawl fitted with lateral SMPs (70 mm mesh size) in the belly using a twin trawl. The study focused on red mullet (Mullus barbatus), a commercially important species, but data for gurnard (Chelidonichthys lucerna and Chelidonichthys cuculus)  were also obtained and analysed. In contrast to previous research on SMPs mounted in the top panel of the trawl, in this study SMPs induced a significant effect on catch performance for red mullet, demonstrating that their lateral position involved greater fish-SMP contact. However, since the test trawl lost a significant amount of legal-sized red mullet compared with the standard trawl, the effect was not wholly positive, possibly due to an excessively large mesh size. Therefore, future studies should be encouraged to test lateral SMPs with smaller mesh sizes

    En el presente trabajo se ha investigado la variabilidad genética de la sardina europea en el mar Adriático y Jónico con el objetivo de detectar la posible existencia de estructura genética entre y dentro de ambas cuencas. El análisis de la variabilidad genética en ocho loci microsatélites detectó una desviación respecto al equilibrio HW por un exceso de homocigotos en algunas de las muestras estudiadas. La estima del nivel de diferenciación interpoblacional, realizada mediante AMOVA, qST and rRST, y descriptores Bayesianos, resultó no significativa para las muestras analizadas. Estos datos concuerdan con los obtenidos en estudios previos basados en alozimas y marcadores mitocondriales y contradicen la anterior identificación de dos subpoblaciones en el mar Adriático en base a datos morfológicos y reproductivos

    Fishing the waves: comparing GAMs and random forest to evaluate the effect of changing marine conditions on the energy performance of vessels

    The optimization of consumption and the reduction of gas emissions in fisheries rely on a thorough examination of all factors affecting the energy balance of fishing vessels. Engines, propellers, or the hydrodynamic characteristics of vessels and gears are unquestionably the primary factors affecting this balance, and an improvement in energy efficiency based on these factors is typically attained through technical modifications to existing technologies. Behavioral modifications, such as a reduction in operational speeds or the selection of closer fishing grounds, are another option. There may still be room for improvement in behavioral responses, for instance by adapting fishing strategies in response to changing weather and sea conditions. As far as the authors are aware, the influence of varying sea state and wind conditions on the energy expenditure of fishing vessels has not yet been investigated and is the focus of this research. In this study, wind and wave actions were associated with the observed activity of three fishing vessels operating in the northern Adriatic Sea: an OTB, a PTM, and a TBB trawler. The analysis made use of a comparison between two different approaches, generalized additive models (GAMs) and random forest, in order to quantify the significance of each variable on the response and generate consumption forecasts. In our analysis, the observed influence of predictors was significant albeit occasionally ambiguous. Wave height had the most obvious impact on energy expenditure, with the towing and gear handling phases being the most affected by wave action. Conversely, navigation seemed to be mostly unaffected by significant wave heights up to 1.5 meters, with unclear effects on consumption estimated above this threshold. The relationship between winds and fuel consumption was found to be nonlinear and ambiguous; hence, its significance should be investigated further

    Spatiotemporal SNP analysis reveals pronounced biocomplexity at the northern range margin of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua

    Accurate prediction of species distribution shifts in the face of climate change requires a sound understanding of population diversity and local adaptations. Previous modeling has suggested that global warming will lead to increased abundance of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the ocean around Greenland, but the dynamics of earlier abundance fluctuations are not well understood. We applied a retrospective spatiotemporal population genomics approach to examine the temporal stability of cod population structure in this region and to search for signatures of divergent selection over a 78-year period spanning major demographic changes. Analyzing >900 gene-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms in 847 individuals, we identified four genetically distinct groups that exhibited varying spatial distributions with considerable overlap and mixture. The genetic composition had remained stable over decades at some spawning grounds, whereas complete population replacement was evident at others. Observations of elevated differentiation in certain genomic regions are consistent with adaptive divergence between the groups, indicating that they may respond differently to environmental variation. Significantly increased temporal changes at a subset of loci also suggest that adaptation may be ongoing. These findings illustrate the power of spatiotemporal population genomics for revealing biocomplexity in both space and time and for informing future fisheries management and conservation efforts

    Metformin and temozolomide, a synergic option to overcome resistance in glioblastoma multiforme models

    Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain tumor with poor survival. Cytoreduction in association with radiotherapy and temozolomide (TMZ) is the standard therapy, but response is heterogeneous and life expectancy is limited. The combined use of chemotherapeutic agents with drugs targeting cell metabolism is becoming an interesting therapeutic option for cancer treatment. Here, we found that metformin (MET) enhances TMZ effect on TMZ-sensitive cell line (U251) and overcomes TMZ-resistance in T98G GBM cell line. In particular, combined-treatment modulated apoptosis by increasing Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and reduced Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production. We also observed that MET associated with TMZ was able to reduce the expression of glioma stem cells (GSC) marker CD90 particularly in T98G cells but not that of CD133. In vivo experiments showed that combined treatment with TMZ and MET significantly slowed down growth of TMZ-resistant tumors but did not affect overall survival of TMZ-sensitive tumor bearing mice. In conclusion, our results showed that metformin is able to enhance TMZ effect in TMZ-resistant cell line suggesting its potential use in TMZ refractory GBM patients. However, the lack of effect on a GBM malignancy marker like CD133 requires further evaluation since it might influence response duration

    Archived DNA reveals fisheries and climate induced collapse of a major fishery

    Fishing and climate change impact the demography of marine fishes, but it is generally ignored that many species are made up of genetically distinct locally adapted populations that may show idiosyncratic responses to environmental and anthropogenic pressures. Here, we track 80 years of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) population dynamics in West Greenland using DNA from archived otoliths in combination with fish population and niche based modeling. We document how the interacting effects of climate change and high fishing pressure lead to dramatic spatiotemporal changes in the proportions and abundance of different genetic populations, and eventually drove the cod fishery to a collapse in the early 1970s. Our results highlight the relevance of fisheries management at the level of genetic populations under future scenarios of climate change
