The author explains that longevity has a double history: on the one hand, a real history, from Antiquity to the present, during which mankind has succeeded in extending the duration of life and youthfulness; on the other hand, a mythical and imaginary history, built around four scenarios studied by the author in this paper

Me
He

Glossary
Note on the pronunciation of the Romanian names: The vowels a, e, i, o and u should generally be pronounced approximately as in Italian, with the exception of a final i, which is usually silent; i or e before another vowel sounds like English y (e.g. Ion resembles the English yon). The vowel â or î resembles the i in fill, and ă sounds like the a in about. The consonants ş and ţ are pronounced like English sh and tz respectively. When immediately followed by i or e, the letters c and g are pr..
Entry into Europe: History, ldeology and Mythology in Romania during the 19th Century
Social and political development in 19th century Romania was characterised by the endeavours of the Romanian elite to bring their country up to Western European standards. Young members of the social elite introduced western models, ideologies, political institutions and fashions. Between 1830 and 1860 the country left the fold of Eastern European culture and replaced its Cyrillic alphabet by a Latin one. The revolution of 1848 and the unification of Moldavia and Valachia in 1859 set the country on the road to modernisation and capitalisation of its economy. The arguments for the severe social changes, as proposed by the different political elites, were mainly historical. These contemporary social projects were projected into an imaginary Romanian past, different political orientations resulting in different historical perspectives. Although or rather because there were no or very little historical facts available, the question of early Romanian history, the fate of the Roman settlers after the retreat of the Roman troops from Dacia in 274 A. D. and the question of continuity of these societies into modern Romanian society dominated the Romanian historical debate for more than a century.Social and political development in 19th century Romania was characterised by the endeavours of the Romanian elite to bring their country up to Western European standards. Conclusion
We have now reached the end of this attempted decoding of a number of mythical structures which are powerfully imprinted in modern Romanian culture. I do not propose to identify alternative solutions which might be more “true” than those I have discussed. Even if, finding myself faced with fabrications or extreme distortions, I have on occasion felt the need to make my own point of view clear, the essence of my argument concerns not History but the historical discourse and its inevitable ideo..
Chapter two. Origins
SOME PRINCIPLES Having surveyed the stages through which Romanian historical ideology has passed, I now propose to analyze one by one its fundamental components, the great mythological configurations around which the national consciousness has crystallized and evolved. It is natural to start with beginnings, not just out of respect for chronological criteria but above all because of the exceptional significance of foundation myths. Each community, from the tribe to the modern nation, legitimi..
