    Nutritional labelling in restaurants : whose responsibility is it anyway?

    To explore consumer attitudes towards the potential implementation of compulsory nutritional labelling on commercial restaurant menus in the UK. This research was approached from the perspective of the consumer with the intention of gaining an insight into personal attitudes towards nutritional labelling on commercial restaurant menus and three focus groups consisting of participants with distinctly differing approaches to eating outside the home were conducted. The research suggests that while some consumers might welcome the introduction of nutritional labelling it is context dependent and without an appropriate education the information provided may not be understood anyway. The issue of responsibility for public health is unresolved although some effort could be made to provide greater nutritional balance in menus. Following this research up with a quantitative investigation, the ideas presented could be verified with the opinions of a larger sample. For example, a study into the reactions to nutritionally labelled menus in various restaurant environments. Consumers would react differently to the information being presented in a fine-dining restaurant than they would in popular catering or fast food. The obstacles faced by restaurants to provide not only nutritional information, but attractive, nutritious food are significant. Prior to this research there were few, if any, studies into the effects of food labelling on consumer choice behaviour in the context of hospitality management

    Supporting evidence-based practice in nutrition and hydration

    The aim of this review is to synthesise literature on food, nutritional status and wound healing to help inform those working in wound care. A literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus and EMBASE databases. Studies were critically appraised and the findings were analysed by narrative synthesis. Nutritional assessment is important in practice as nutritional status can impact on wound healing in several ways (including affecting both healing time and susceptibility to infection). There is widespread recognition of the importance of nutritional assessment tools, however, completion can sometimes be overlooked in practice. Healthcare professionals also need to be aware that obesity may be accompanied by micronutrient deficiency causing low micronutrient levels, however, nutritional assessment tools using body mass index (BMI) and weight loss may not identify this. Although there are intervention studies using nutritional formulations, such as amino acids, to support wound healing, the results of this review suggest that future research around using food as therapy and specific nutritional supplementation is needed

    There is a growing interest in both urban agriculture and the issue of sustainability, as framed in terms of climate change, landscape, economic uncertainty and resource shortages, while issues around child health and wellbeing are increasingly causing concern. Education, especially in terms of sustainability teaching and the production of food by schools on school premises is key. The Leeds Edible Schools Sustainability Network is, at this date, an un-constituted, informal group of organisations and academics, all based or active within the Leeds district, who share core values around the wellbeing and sustainability agenda and who are all, in various ways, involved in supporting educational establishments and related organisations in the growing (often on school premises) and consumption of local food, the promotion of resilient and healthy practices, including outdoor work and teaching about healthy school food, and the development of effective education around the topic of sustainability

    The potential for deprescribing in care home residents with Type 2 diabetes

    Background: Type 2 diabetes is a common diagnosis in care home residents that is associated with potentially inappropriate prescribing and thus risk of additional suffering. Previous studies found that diabetes medicines can be safely withdrawn in care home residents, encouraging further investigation of the potential for deprescribing amongst these patients. Objectives: Describe comorbidities and medicine use in care home residents with Type 2 diabetes; identify number of potentially inappropriate medicines prescribed for these residents using a medicines optimisation tool; assess clinical applicability of the tool. Setting Thirty care homes for older people, East Anglia, UK. Method: Data on diagnoses and medicines were extracted from medical records of 826 residents. Potentially inappropriate medicines were identified using the tool ‘Optimising Safe and Appropriate Medicines Use’. Twenty percent of results were validated by a care home physician. Main outcome measure: Number of potentially inappropriate medicines. Results: The 106 residents with Type 2 diabetes had more comorbidities and prescriptions than those without. Over 90 % of residents with Type 2 diabetes had at least one potentially inappropriate medication. The most common was absence of valid indication. The physician unreservedly endorsed 39 % of the suggested deprescribing, and would consider discontinuing all but one of the remaining medicines following access to additional information. Conclusion: UK care home residents with Type 2 diabetes had an increased burden of comorbidities and prescriptions. The majority of these patients were prescribed potentially inappropriate medicines. Validation by a care home physician supported the clinical applicability of the medicines optimisation tool

With the increased popularity of online health-food bloggers and 'refined-sugar free' recipes, this review looked to analyse recipes from popular online bloggers to validate the veracity of their 'sugar-free' and 'healthy' claims and assess their adherence to recently implemented nutritional guidelines
