PURPOSE: The sensory trigeminal nerve in the trigeminal cave of Meckel-which is an individualized lodge-is classically segmented into two parts: the trigeminal ganglion (TG) and the triangular plexus (TP). The TP has been defined as the portion of the trigeminal nerve from the posterior margin of the TG to the path over the upper ridge of the petrous bone. Due to its relatively unrecognized status, its morphological and functional anatomy has been reviewed by the authors through a PRISMA systematic review of the literature. METHODS: The authors have carried out a systematic review of the TP according to the PRISMA model with various bibliographical bases. Before 1947: Medic @ Library (BIU Santé Paris, 2017); Index-Catalog of the Library of the Surgeon-General\u27s Office (US National Library of Medicine, 2017); Gallica (French National Library, 2017). After 1947: PUBMED, PubMed Central and MEDLINE. RESULTS: 56 articles were retained for full-text examination, of which 23 were chosen and included. The TP was described as having a triangular shape (30.2%), a plexual organization (97.4%) with sensory-, motor- and sympathetic-anastomoses (96.7%) that, however, respect the somatotopic trigeminal distribution (93.3%). The direct electrical stimulation of the root at the level of the TP (during radiofrequency-thermorhizotomy procedures) confirmed a clear-cut somatotopy. CONCLUSION: An understanding of both the morphological and the functional anatomy of the triangular plexus can contribute to accuracy and safety on the surgeries performed for trigeminal neuralgia and tumor removal inside the trigeminal cave

The tethered effect of the arachnoid in vago-glossopharyngeal neuralgia: a real associated alternative mechanism?

Vago-glossopharyngeal neuralgia (VGPN) is a rarely seen disease when compared to trigeminal neuralgia. When the pain is resistant to medical therapy, microvascular decompression can be performed if a vascular conflict is suspected on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, arachnoid pathology may play a role in VGPN. We report two cases of VGPN caused by tethered arachnoid, associated with a vascular contact in which pain was reduced by freeing rootlets from arachnoid compression. We report two cases relating to 50-year-old and 30-year-old men with a history of electric shooting pain triggered by swallowing in the right pharyngeal and auricular regions. Preoperative MRI documented a neurovascular conflict in the first case and an arachnoid cyst in the second. Surgery was performed via a retrosigmoid craniotomy. In both cases, the intraoperative findings documented a tethered arachnoid membrane compressive to cranial nerves IX and X. Untethering was performed by liberation of the rootlets from the arachnoid with microvascular decompression. No additional rhizotomy was performed. The postoperative course was uneventful and pain was relieved in the first case and decreased in the second. In VGPN, a tethered arachnoid may play a role in causing the neuralgia, either alone or associated with a neuro-vascular conflict

Hydrogen passivation of boron acceptors in as-grown boron-doped CVD diamond epilayers

    Get PDF
A homoepitaxial boron-doped diamond single layer is investigated by means of Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and cathodoluminescence (CL). Both techniques are shown to be complementary. μ-FTIR mapping allows to determine the location of active boron while CL allows discernability between passivation and compensation. Hydrogen incorporation during chemical vapour deposition (CVD) growth is revealed to passivate boron acceptors. The obtained results highlight that plasma etching can induce a dissociation of B–H centres.4 page

Considerations on rescattering effects for threshold photo- and electro-production of π0\pi^0 on deuteron

We show that for the S-state π0\pi^0-production in processes γ+dd+π0\gamma+d\to d+\pi^0 and e+de+d+π0e^-+d\to e^-+d+\pi^0 the rescattering effects due to the transition: γ+dp+p+π \gamma+d\to p+p+\pi^- (or n+n+π+)d+π0n+n+\pi^+)\to d+\pi^0 are cancelled out due to the Pauli principle. The large values for these effects predicted in the past may result from the fact that the spin structure of the corresponding matrix element and the necessary antisymmetrization induced by the presence of identical protons (or neutrons) in the intermediate state was not taken into account accurately. One of the important consequences of these considerations is that π0\pi^0 photo- and electro-production on deuteron near threshold can bring direct information about elementary neutron amplitudes.Comment: Add a new sectio

Threshold neutral pion photoproduction off the tri-nucleon to O(q^4)

We calculate electromagnetic neutral pion production off tri-nucleon bound states (3H, 3He) at threshold in chiral nuclear effective field theory to fourth order in the standard heavy baryon counting. We show that the fourth order two-nucleon corrections to the S-wave multipoles at threshold are very small. This implies that a precise measurement of the S-wave cross section for neutral pion production off 3He allows for a stringent test of the chiral perturbation theory prediction for the S-wave electric multipole E_{0+}^{pi0 n}.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, title changed, final version to appear in EPJA. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1103.340

Higher Charges in Dynamical Spin Chains for SYM Theory

We construct, to the first two non-trivial orders, the next conserved charge in the su(2|3) sector of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. This represents a test of integrability in a sector where the interactions change the number of sites of the chain. The expression for the charge is completely determined by the algebra and can be written in a diagrammatic form in terms of the interactions already present in the Hamiltonian. It appears likely that this diagrammatic expression remains valid in the full theory and can be generalized to higher loops and higher charges thus helping in establishing complete integrability for these dynamical chains.Comment: 14 pages; V2: Appendix added with diagrammatic expression for H_{3,2

Successful single-dose amoxicillin prophylaxis against experimental streptococcal endocarditis: evidence for two mechanisms of protection.

Amoxicillin prophylaxis against experimental endocarditis due to one nontolerant and two tolerant strains of streptococci was studied in rats. Single-dose amoxicillin protected against the two tolerant strains in animals challenged with the 90% infective dose (ID90), but protection diminished with increasing inoculum sizes. Protection against the nontolerant strain was successful with inocula that were 100- and 1,000-fold larger than the ID90. Close correlation existed between the speed of bacterial killing in vitro, the time of exposure to bactericidal levels in vivo, and the range of inocula against which prophylaxis was effective. Amoxicillin seemed to protect by at least two mechanisms. (1) When in vitro tests indicated adequate bacterial killing, protection was independent of the inoculum size and was probably conferred by bacterial killing. (2) When in vitro tests indicated bacterial inhibition but not killing, protection was inoculum-dependent and was probably mediated by inhibition of bacterial adherence

Kidney injury molecule-1 is an early biomarker of cadmium nephrotoxicity

Cadmium (Cd) exposure results in injury to the proximal tubule characterized by polyuria and proteinuria. Kidney injury molecule-1 (Kim-1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein not normally detected in the mature kidney, but is upregulated and shed into the urine following nephrotoxic injury. In this study, we determine if Kim-1 might be a useful early biomarker of Cd nephrotoxicity. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were given daily injections of Cd for up to 12 weeks. Weekly urine samples were analyzed for Kim-1, protein, creatinine, metallothionein, and Clara cell protein CC-16. Significant levels of Kim-1 were detected in the urine by 6 weeks and continued to increase throughout the treatment period. This appearance of Kim-1 occurred 4–5 weeks before the onset of proteinuria, and 1–3 weeks before the appearance of metallothionein and CC-16. Higher doses of Cd gave rise to higher Kim-1 excretion. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) expression analysis showed that Kim-1 transcript levels were increased after 6 weeks at the low dose of Cd. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that Kim-1 was present in proximal tubule cells of the Cd-treated rats. Our results suggest that Kim-1 may be a useful biomarker of early stages of Cd-induced proximal tubule injury

Parity violating asymmetry in inclusive scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons by unpolarized protons with π0\pi^0 or π+\pi^+ meson production, is calculated as a function of the momentum transfer squared Q2Q^2 and the total energy WW of the πN\pi N-system. This asymmetry, which is induced by the interference of the one-photon exchange amplitude with the parity-odd part of the Z0Z^0-exchange amplitude, is calculated for the γ(Z)+pN+π\gamma^*(Z^*)+p\to N+\pi processes (γ\gamma^* is a virtual photon and ZZ^* a virtual Z-boson) considering the Δ\Delta-contribution in the ss-channel, the standard Born contributions and vector meson (ρ\rho and ω\omega) exchanges in the tt-channel. Taking into account the known isotopic properties of the hadron electromagnetic and neutral currents, we show that the P-odd term is the sum of two contributions. The main term is model independent and it can be calculated exactly in terms of fundamental constants. It is found to be linear in Q2Q^2. The second term is a relatively small correction which is determined by the isoscalar component of the electromagnetic current. Near threshold and in the Δ\Delta-region, this isoscalar part is much smaller (in absolute value) than the isovector one: its contribution to the asymmetry depend on the polarization state (longitudinal or transverse) of the virtual photon.Comment: 30 pages 9 figure
