Generation of optimal trajectories for Earth hybrid pole sitters
A pole-sitter orbit is a closed path that is constantly above one of the Earth's poles, by means of continuous low thrust. This work proposes to hybridize solar sail propulsion and solar electric propulsion (SEP) on the same spacecraft, to enable such a pole-sitter orbit. Locally-optimal control laws are found with a semi-analytical inverse method, starting from a trajectory that satisfies the pole-sitter condition in the Sun-Earth circular restricted three-body problem. These solutions are subsequently used as first guess to find optimal orbits, using a direct method based on pseudospectral transcription. The orbital dynamics of both the pure SEP case and the hybrid case are investigated and compared. It is found that the hybrid spacecraft allows savings on propellant mass fraction. Finally, it is shown that for sufficiently long missions, a hybrid pole-sitter, based on mid-term technology, enables a consistent reduction in the launch mass for a given payload, with respect to a pure SEP spacecraft

El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar la importancia de incluir la dimensión económica en los Estudios deImpacto ambiental (EsIA). Dimensión económica que se incorpora a la evaluación “ex–ante” de inversiones a través del análisis beneficios costos (ABC) y la valoración económica de las externalidades (VEE). El trabajo muestra con ilustraciones y la presentación de dos casos las consecuencias no deseables de ignorar el ABC: a) Existencia de proyectos de eficiencia dudosa en términos de su resultado económico-social; y b) Escasez de proyectos ambientalmente eficientes, pero con escaso retorno económico privado
Specific heat amplitude ratios for anisotropic Lifshitz critical behaviors
We determine the specific heat amplitude ratio near a -axial Lifshitz
point and show its universal character. Using a recent renormalization group
picture along with new field-theoretical -expansion techniques,
we established this amplitude ratio at one-loop order. We estimate the
numerical value of this amplitude ratio for and . The result is in
very good agreement with its experimental measurement on the magnetic material
. It is shown that in the limit it trivially reduces to the

Channel equalization for indoor lighting communications networks
We consider indoors communications networks using modulated LEDs to transmit the information packets. A generic indoor channel equalization formulation is proposed assuming the existence of both line of sight and diffuse emitters. The proposed approach is of relevance to emergent indoors distributed sensing modalities for which various lighting based network communications protocols are considered
The afterglow and kilonova of the short GRB 160821B
GRB 160821B is a short duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected and localized
by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory in the outskirts of a spiral galaxy at
z=0.1613, at a projected physical offset of 16 kpc from the galaxy's center. We
present X-ray, optical/nIR and radio observations of its counterpart and model
them with two distinct components of emission: a standard afterglow, arising
from the interaction of the relativistic jet with the surrounding medium, and a
kilonova, powered by the radioactive decay of the sub-relativistic ejecta.
Broadband modeling of the afterglow data reveals a weak reverse shock
propagating backward into the jet, and a likely jet-break at 3.5 d. This is
consistent with a structured jet seen slightly off-axis while expanding into a
low-density medium. Analysis of the kilonova properties suggests a rapid
evolution toward red colors, similar to AT2017gfo, and a low nIR luminosity,
possibly due to the presence of a long-lived neutron star. The global
properties of the environment, the inferred low mass (M_ej < 0.006 Msun) and
velocities (v > 0.05 c) of lanthanide-rich ejecta are consistent with a binary

Lattice models and Landau theory for type II incommensurate crystals
Ground state properties and phonon dispersion curves of a classical linear
chain model describing a crystal with an incommensurate phase are studied. This
model is the DIFFOUR (discrete frustrated phi4) model with an extra
fourth-order term added to it. The incommensurability in these models may arise
if there is frustration between nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor
interactions. We discuss the effect of the additional term on the phonon
branches and phase diagram of the DIFFOUR model. We find some features not
present in the DIFFOUR model such as the renormalization of the
nearest-neighbor coupling. Furthermore the ratio between the slopes of the soft
phonon mode in the ferroelectric and paraelectric phase can take on values
different from -2. Temperature dependences of the parameters in the model are
different above and below the paraelectric transition, in contrast with the
assumptions made in Landau theory. In the continuum limit this model reduces to
the Landau free energy expansion for type II incommensurate crystals and it can
be seen as the lowest-order generalization of the simplest Lifshitz-point
model. Part of the numerical calculations have been done by an adaption of the
Effective Potential Method, orginally used for models with nearest-neighbor

Direct Observation of Propagating Gigahertz Coherent Guided Acoustic Phonons in Free Standing Single Copper Nanowires
We report on gigahertz acoustic phonon waveguiding in free-standing single
copper nanowires studied by femtosecond transient reflectivity measurements.
The results are discussed on the basis of the semianalytical resolution of the
Pochhammer and Chree equation. The spreading of the generated Gaussian wave
packet of two different modes is derived analytically and compared with the
observed oscillations of the sample reflectivity. These experiments provide a
unique way to independently obtain geometrical and material characterization.
This direct observation of coherent guided acoustic phonons in a single
nano-object is also the first step toward nanolateral size acoustic transducer
and comprehensive studies of the thermal properties of nanowires
Phenomenological model for the remanent magnetization of dilute quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets
We present a phenomenological model for the remanent magnetization at low
temperatures in the quasi-one-dimensional dilute antiferromagnets
CH_{3}NH_{3}Mn_{1-x}Cd_{x} Cl_{3}\cdot 2H_{2}O and
(CH_{3})_{2}NH_{2}Mn_{1-x}Cd_{x}Cl_{3}\cdot 2H_{2}O. The model assumes the
existence of uncompensated magnetic moments induced in the odd-sized segments
generated along the Mn(^{2+}) chains upon dilution. These moments are further
assumed to correlate ferromagnetically after removal of a cooling field. Using
a (mean-field) linear-chain approximation and reasonable set of model
parameters, we are able to reproduce the approximate linear temperature
dependence observed for the remanent magnetization in the real compounds.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; final version to appear in Physical Review
Bulk and Boundary Critical Behavior at Lifshitz Points
Lifshitz points are multicritical points at which a disordered phase, a
homogeneous ordered phase, and a modulated ordered phase meet. Their bulk
universality classes are described by natural generalizations of the standard
model. Analyzing these models systematically via modern
field-theoretic renormalization group methods has been a long-standing
challenge ever since their introduction in the middle of the 1970s. We survey
the recent progress made in this direction, discussing results obtained via
dimensionality expansions, how they compare with Monte Carlo results, and open
problems. These advances opened the way towards systematic studies of boundary
critical behavior at -axial Lifshitz points. The possible boundary critical
behavior depends on whether the surface plane is perpendicular to one of the
modulation axes or parallel to all of them. We show that the semi-infinite
field theories representing the corresponding surface universality classes in
these two cases of perpendicular and parallel surface orientation differ
crucially in their Hamiltonian's boundary terms and the implied boundary
conditions, and explain recent results along with our current understanding of

E-government adoption: A cultural comparison

This study compares e-government adoption in the U.K. to adoption in the U.S. In particular, this study seeks to determine if the same factors are salient in both countries. Several studies have explored citizen acceptance of e-government services in the U.S. However, few studies have explored this phenomenon in the U.K. To identify the similarities and differences between the U.K. and the U.S. a survey is conducted in the U.K. and the findings are compared to the literature that investigates diffusion in the U.S. This study proposes a model of e-government adoption in the U.K. based on salient factors in the U.S. A survey is administered to 260 citizens in London to assess the importance of relative advantage, trust and the digital divide on intention to use e-government. The results of binary logistic regression indicate that there are cultural differences in e-government adoption in the U.K. and the U.S. The results indicate that of the prevailing adoption constructs, relative advantage and trust are pertinent in both the U.S. and the U.K., while ICT adoption barriers such as access and skill may vary by culture.
