The Role of Equity Crowdfunding Campaigns in Shaping Firm Innovativeness: Evidence from Italy
Purpose
This paper aims to contribute to the scientific debate concerning the impact of equity crowdfunding on the performance of crowdfunded firms after campaigning. To this aim, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of the campaign and the subsequent firm innovativeness.
Design/methodology/approach
This study adopts a quantitative research approach to evaluate if the entrepreneurial choices affecting the characteristics of the equity crowdfunding campaigns have an impact on the post-campaign firm innovativeness.
Findings
The results of the models show that the campaign characteristics have a direct impact on the firm innovativeness, both in terms of offering and communication and the campaign performance.
Originality/value
This paper presents one of the first studies to investigate the relationship between the choice of campaign characteristics and the post-campaign firm innovativeness. As such, the study contributes to both the literature concerning start-up innovation and the literature about the impact of equity crowdfunding
Air Data Sensor Fault Detection with an Augmented Floating Limiter
Although very uncommon, the sequential failures of all aircraft Pitot tubes, with the consequent loss of signals for all the dynamic parameters from the Air Data System, have been found to be the cause of a number of catastrophic accidents in aviation history. This paper proposes a robust data-driven method to detect faulty measurements of aircraft airspeed, angle of attack, and angle of sideslip. This approach first consists in the appropriate selection of suitable sets of model regressors to be used as inputs of neural network-based estimators to be used online for failure detection. The setup of the proposed fault detection method is based on the statistical analysis of the residual signals in fault-free conditions, which, in turn, allows the tuning of a pair of floating limiter detectors that act as time-varying fault detection thresholds with the objective of reducing both the false alarm rate and the detection delay. The proposed approach has been validated using real flight data by injecting artificial ramp and hard failures on the above sensors. The results confirm the capabilities of the proposed scheme showing accurate detection with a desirable low level of false alarm when compared with an equivalent scheme with conventional “a priori set” fixed detection thresholds. The achieved performance improvement consists mainly in a substantial reduction of the detection time while keeping desirable low false alarm rates
Influence of Dietary Supplementation with Prebiotic, Oregano Extract, and Vitamin E on Fatty Acid Profile and Oxidative Status of Rabbit Meat
The effect of dietary supplementation with vitamin E, oregano, and prebiotic on fatty acids and oxidative profiles of rabbit meat (loin and hind leg) was evaluated. New Zealand white rabbits weaned at 30 days of age were fed with one of six diets until 80 days of age: standard diet includingω3 polyunsaturated fatty and conjugated linolenic acids sources (S) and five diets adding vitamin E (150 ppm, E), oregano water extract (2 g/kg feed diet, O), prebiotic (THEPAX® 1.5 g/kg feed diet, T), vitamin E plus prebiotic (TE), and oregano water extract plus prebiotic (TO), respectively. The lipid oxidative status (TBARS) showed lower values with respect to S, mainly when vitamin E was administered. In particular, all the experimental diets decreased TBARS values with respect to the control group in the loin, but no effect was found in the hind leg. In all feed samples, the amounts of fatty acid classes increased in the following order: polyunsaturated fatty acids > monounsaturated fatty acid > saturated fatty acid. The dietary supplementations did not affect the fatty acid composition of meat. The experimented diets compared to the control were not able to provide a selective increase of bioactive fatty acid in meat samples; however, the six nutritional strategies led to highly nutritional rabbit meat with an interesting value of theω6/ω3 ratio
Imaging of thoracolumbar spine traumas
Spine trauma is an ominous event with a high morbidity, frequent mortality, and significant psychological, social, and financial consequences for patients, their relatives and society. On average three out of four spinal fractures involve the thoracolumbar spine and up to one-third are complicated by spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are a significant cause of disability in US and in all western countries. Knowledge of the main principles of biomechanics is essential in understanding the patho-morphology of spinal injuries, and the evolution of the various classification systems. Classification systems should be able to create a common language between specialists in order to improve patients' prognosis, guide treatment and compare treatment outcomes. Imaging has always been crucial in the evaluation of the injury type and accompanied the development of different classification systems. Thoracolumbar spine (TLS) trauma has a wide spectrum ranging from minor isolated fractures to highly unstable fracture-dislocations. Early classification systems were based on the analysis of the pattern of bony injuries on radiographs and CT. Traditionally, conventional radiographs are performed to confirm the clinical suspicion and to depict the level and type of bone injury. However, because of their inherent limitations, radiographs are often more helpful in proving the existence of a suspected bony spinal injury rather than excluding it. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is superior in evaluating bone anatomy and, especially in polytrauma patients, it is the first line imaging modality. Morphological bone damage may be accurately shown and classified on CT. the most recent classifications also incorporate the integrity of soft tissues structures, which is considered equally relevant to spinal stability. Injuries to ligaments and discs can only be suspected on radiographs and conventional CT, although dual-energy CT is offering new insights on collagen mapping of damaged discs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may directly assess disc and ligamentous injuries, but also subtle osseous injuries, playing a complementary role in defining the whole spinal damage and an eventual instability. MRI is the only valid modality to assess the spinal cord (SC) and is indicated whenever a neurologic injury is suspected. Advanced MRI techniques, such as diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and tractography, may provide further information regarding the integrity of the white matter which may improve outcome prognostication. Despite challenges in terms of costs, availability, accessibility and specificity, MRI and advanced MRI techniques are increasingly being used in spinal injuries. We present a review on TLS traumas discussing on the development of different classification system used in their evaluation, the role of imaging for their detection and the correlation to the patients' outcomes and treatment options
Myrtus polyphenols, from antioxidants to anti-inflammatory molecules: Exploring a network involving cytochromes P450 and Vitamin D
Inflammatory response represents one of the main mechanisms of healing and tissue function restoration. On the other hand, chronic inflammation leads to excessive secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in the onset of several diseases. Oxidative stress condition may contribute in worsening inflammatory state fall, increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and cytokines release. Polyphenols can counteract inflammation and oxidative stress, modulating the release of toxic molecules and interacting with physiological defenses, such as cytochromes p450 enzymes. In this paper, we aimed at evaluating the anti-inflammatory properties of different concentrations of Myrtus communis L. pulp and seeds extracts, derived from liquor industrial production, on human fibroblasts. We determined ROS production after oxidative stress induction by H 2 O 2 treatment, and the gene expression of different proinflammatory cytokines. We also analyzed the expression of CYP3A4 and CYP27B1 genes, in order to evaluate the capability of Myrtus polyphenols to influence the metabolic regulation of other molecules, including drugs, ROS, and vitamin D. Our results showed that Myrtus extracts exert a synergic effect with vitamin D in reducing inflammation and ROS production, protecting cells from oxidative stress damages. Moreover, the extracts modulate CYPs expression, preventing chronic inflammation and suggesting their use in development of new therapeutic formulations
Endovascular repair of isolated post-traumatic subclavian artery false-aneurysm (FA) using gore viabahn vbx-balloon-expandable (BE) stent-graft: case report and literature review
True and false aneurysms (FA) of the subclavian artery are at high risk of rupture due to their localization and proximity/closeness to the articular bone structures of the upper thoracic outlet and shoulders. Surgical and endovascular treatments are good options to avoid complications such as aneurysms rupture, thrombosis and distal embolism alone or in combination. Self-expandable (SE) covered stents are the most used devices for the treatment of subclavian artery aneurysms. We report on a case of post traumatic left intra-thoracic subclavian artery FA treated using endovascular technique, highlighting the usefulness of the new covered Gore Viabahn VBX-BE stent-graft that combines the advantages of a high radial strength of a BE stent with the deliverability and conformability of a SE stent
Exploring multielement nanogranular coatings to forestall implant-related infections
Introduction: As we approach the post-antibiotic era, the development of innovative
antimicrobial strategies that carry out their activities through non-specific mechanisms
could limit the onset and spread of drug resistance. In this context, the use of
nanogranular coatings of multielement nanoparticles (NPs) conjugated to the surface
of implantable biomaterialsmight represent a strategy to reduce the systemicdrawbacks
by locally confining the NPs effects against either prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells.
Methods: In the present study, two new multielement nanogranular coatings
combining Ag and Cu with either Ti or Mg were synthesized by a gas phase physical
method and tested against pathogens isolated from periprosthetic joint infections to
address their potential antimicrobial value and toxicity in an in vitro experimental setting.
Results: Overall, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and
Escherichia coli displayed a significantly decreased adhesion when cultured on
Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu coatings compared to uncoated controls, regardless of
their antibiotic resistance traits. A dissimilar behavior was observed when
Pseudomonas aeruginosa was cultured for 30 and 120 minutes upon the surface
of Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu-coated discs. Biofilm formation was mainly reduced
by the active effect of Mg-Ag-Cu compared to Ti-Ag-Cu and, again, coatings had a
milder effect on P. aeruginosa, probably due to its exceptional capability of
attachment and matrix production. These data were further confirmed by the
evaluation of bacterial colonization on nanoparticle-coated discs through
confocal microscopy. Finally, to exclude any cytotoxic effects on eukaryotic
cells, the biocompatibility of NPs-coated discs was studied. Results
demonstrated a viability of 95.8% and 89.4% of cells cultured in the presence of
Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu discs, respectively, when compared to negative controls.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the present study demonstrated the promising antiadhesive
features of both Ti-Ag-Cu and Mg-Ag-Cu coatings, as well as their action
in hampering the biofilm formation, highlighting the safe use of the tested multielement
families of nanoparticles as new strategies against bacterial attachment to
the surface of biomedical implants
Implementing a robotic liver resection program does not always require prior laparoscopic experience
Background: Preliminary experience in laparoscopic liver surgery is usually suggested prior to implementation of a robotic liver resection program. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort analysis of patients undergoing robotic (RLR) versus laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for hepatocellular carcinoma at a center with concomitant initiation of robotic and laparoscopic programs RESULTS: A total of 92 consecutive patients operated on between May 2014 and February 2019 were included: 40 RLR versus 52 LLR. Median age (69 vs. 67; p = 0.74), male sex (62.5% vs. 59.6%; p = 0.96), incidence of chronic liver disease (97.5% vs.98.1%; p = 0.85), median model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score (8 vs. 9; p = 0.92), and median largest nodule size (22 vs. 24 mm) were similar between RLR and LLR. In the LLR group, there was a numerically higher incidence of nodules located in segment 4 (20.0% vs. 16.6%; p = 0.79); a numerically higher use of Pringle's maneuver (32.7% vs. 20%; p = 0.23), and a shorter duration of surgery (median of 165.5 vs. 217.5 min; p = 0.04). Incidence of complications (25% vs.32.7%; p = 0.49), blood transfusions (2.5% vs.9.6%; p = 0.21), and median length of stay (6 vs. 5; p = 0.54) were similar between RLR and LLR. The overall (OS) and recurrence-free (RFS) survival rates at 1 and 5 years were 100 and 79 and 95 and 26% for RLR versus 96.2 and 76.9 and 84.6 and 26.9% for LLR (log-rank p = 0.65 for OS and 0.72 for RFS). Conclusions: Based on our results, concurrent implementation of a robotic and laparoscopic liver resection program appears feasible and safe, and is associated with similar oncologic long-term outcomes
Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction effectively treated with low dose botulinum toxin. A case report from Italy
A large constellation of hitherto unexplained symptoms including inability to burp, gurgling noises from the chest and lower neck, abdominal bloating, flatulence, painful hiccups and emetophobia was defined as Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction (R-CPD) in 2019. First choice treatment of R-CPD involves injection of botulinum toxin into the cricopharyngeus muscle under local or general anesthesia. This treatment has been found to be effective in the vast majority of subjects, with limited adverse events and prolonged therapeutic effects. Notwithstanding, R-CPD is still a poorly understood and underestimated disease, and a specific therapeutic dosage range of botulinum toxin (BT) has not been yet established. In this report, we describe the first case of R-CPD diagnosed in Italy, successfully treated with unilateral, anesthesia-free injection of 10 units of onabotulinum toxin into the cricopharyngeus muscle, representing the lowest dose reported to date
Melatonin and Vitamin D Orchestrate Adipose Derived Stem Cell Fate by Modulating Epigenetic Regulatory Genes
Melatonin, that regulates many physiological processes including circadian rhythms, is a molecule able to promote osteoblasts maturation in vitro and to prevent bone loss in vivo, while regulating also adipocytes metabolism. In this regard, we have previously shown that melatonin in combination with vitamin D, is able to counteract the appearance of an adipogenic phenotype in adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs), cultured in an adipogenic favoring condition. In the present study, we aimed at evaluating the specific phenotype elicited by melatonin and vitamin D based medium, considering also the involvement of epigenetic regulating genes. ADSCs were cultured in a specific adipogenic conditioned media, in the presence of melatonin alone or with vitamin D. The expression of specific osteogenic related genes was evaluated at different time points, together with the histone deacetylases epigenetic regulators, HDAC1 and Sirtuins (SIRT) 1 and 2. Our results show that melatonin and vitamin D are able to modulate ADSCs commitment towards osteogenic phenotype through the upregulation of HDAC1, SIRT 1 and 2, unfolding an epigenetic regulation in stem cell differentiation and opening novel strategies for future therapeutic balancing of stem cell fate toward adipogenic or osteogenic phenotype
