Search for a Standard Model Higgs Boson in CMS via Vector Boson Fusion in the H->WW->l\nu l\nu Channel
We present the potential for discovering the Standard Model Higgs boson
produced by the vector-boson fusion mechanism. We considered the decay of Higgs
bosons into the W+W- final state, with both W-bosons subsequently decaying
leptonically. The main background is ttbar with one or more jets produced. This
study is based on a full simulation of the CMS detector, and up-to-date
reconstruction codes. The result is that a signal of 5 sigma significance can
be obtained with an integrated luminosity of 12-72 1/fb for Higgs boson masses
between 130-200 GeV. In addition, the major background can be measured directly
to 7% from the data with an integrated luminosity of 30 1/fb. In this study, we
also suggested a method to obtain information in Higgs mass using the
transverse mass distributions.Comment: 26 pages, 22 figure
Post-Stall Aerodynamic Modeling and Gain-Scheduled Control Design
A multidisciplinary research e.ort that combines aerodynamic modeling and gain-scheduled control design for aircraft flight at post-stall conditions is described. The aerodynamic modeling uses a decambering approach for rapid prediction of post-stall aerodynamic characteristics of multiple-wing con.gurations using known section data. The approach is successful in bringing to light multiple solutions at post-stall angles of attack right during the iteration process. The predictions agree fairly well with experimental results from wind tunnel tests. The control research was focused on actuator saturation and .ight transition between low and high angles of attack regions for near- and post-stall aircraft using advanced LPV control techniques. The new control approaches maintain adequate control capability to handle high angle of attack aircraft control with stability and performance guarantee
Coherent information analysis of quantum channels in simple quantum systems
The coherent information concept is used to analyze a variety of simple
quantum systems. Coherent information was calculated for the information decay
in a two-level atom in the presence of an external resonant field, for the
information exchange between two coupled two-level atoms, and for the
information transfer from a two-level atom to another atom and to a photon
field. The coherent information is shown to be equal to zero for all
full-measurement procedures, but it completely retains its original value for
quantum duplication. Transmission of information from one open subsystem to
another one in the entire closed system is analyzed to learn quantum
information about the forbidden atomic transition via a dipole active
transition of the same atom. It is argued that coherent information can be used
effectively to quantify the information channels in physical systems where
quantum coherence plays an important role.Comment: 24 pages, 7 figs; Final versiob after minor changes, title changed;

Higgs-Boson Production Associated with a Single Bottom Quark in Supersymmetric QCD
Due to the enhancement of the couplings between Higgs boson and bottom quarks
in the minimal sypersymmetric standard model (MSSM), the cross section of the
process pp(p\bar{p}) \to h^0b(h^0\bar{b})+X at hadron colliders can be
considerably enhanced. We investigated the production of Higgs boson associated
with a single high-p_T bottom quark via subprocess bg(\bar{b}g) \to
h^0b(h^0\bar{b}) at hadron colliders including the next-to-leading order (NLO)
QCD corrections in MSSM. We find that the NLO QCD correction in the MSSM
reaches 50%-70% at the LHC and 60%-85% at the Fermilab Tevatron in our chosen
parameter space.Comment: accepted by Phys. Rev.
Vertical transmission of microbiomes into embryo culture media and its association with assisted reproductive outcomes
Research question: Can microbes vertically transmit from semen and follicular fluid to embryo culture media during assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment? Design: Spent embryo culture media (SECM), seminal fluid and follicular fluid samples were collected from 61 couples with infertility undergoing ART treatment at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong SAR, China. Metagenomic analysis was conducted using 16s rRNA sequencing to identify the source of microbes in SECM, correlation between the semen microbiome and male infertility, and correlation between the follicular fluid microbiome and female infertility. Results: Microbial vertical transmission into SECM was reported in 82.5% of cases, and semen was the main source of contamination in conventional IVF cases. The increased abundances of Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus anginosus in semen had negative impacts on total motility and sperm count, respectively (P < 0.001). Significant increases in abundance of the genera Prophyromonas, Neisseria and Facklamia were observed in follicular fluid in women with anovulation, uterine factor infertility and unexplained infertility, respectively (P < 0.01). No significant correlation was found between the bacteria identified in all sample types and ART outcomes, including fertilization rate, embryo development, number of available embryos, and clinical pregnancy rate. Conclusion: Embryo culture media can be contaminated during ART treatment, not only by seminal microbes but also by follicular fluid and other sources of microbes. Strong correlations were found between specific microbial taxa in semen and sperm quality, and between the follicular fluid microbiome and the aetiology of female infertility. However, no significant association was found between the microbiomes of SECM, semen and follicular fluid and ART outcomes.</p
Adaptive Density Estimation on the Circle by Nearly-Tight Frames
This work is concerned with the study of asymptotic properties of
nonparametric density estimates in the framework of circular data. The
estimation procedure here applied is based on wavelet thresholding methods: the
wavelets used are the so-called Mexican needlets, which describe a nearly-tight
frame on the circle. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the -risk
function for these estimates, in particular its adaptivity, proving that its
rate of convergence is nearly optimal.Comment: 30 pages, 3 figure
Cu NMR Study of Detwinned Single Crystals of Ortho--II YBCO6.5
Copper NMR has been used as a local probe of the oxygen ordering in Ortho--II
YBa2Cu3O6.5 crystals grown in BaZrO3 crucibles. Line assignments have been made
to each of the expected crystallographically inequivalent sites. The presence
of distinct and narrow lines for these sites as well as the lack of a line
known to be associated with oxygen defects indicates that these crystals are
highly stoichiometric. Our estimate of the lower limit on the chain length is
consistent with that derived from X-ray diffraction measurements. In addition,
we have found no evidence for static magnetic moments, in contrast to some
previous results.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physica
Robust signatures of solar neutrino oscillation solutions
With the goal of identifying signatures that select specific neutrino
oscillation parameters, we test the robustness of global oscillation solutions
that fit all the available solar and reactor experimental data. We use three
global analysis strategies previously applied by different authors and also
determine the sensitivity of the oscillation solutions to the critical nuclear
fusion cross section, S_{17}(0), for the production of 8B. The favored
solutions are LMA, LOW, and VAC in order of g.o.f. The neutral current to
charged current ratio for SNO is predicted to be 3.5 +- 0.6 (1 sigma), which is
separated from the no-oscillation value of 1.0 by much more than the expected
experimental error. The predicted range of the day-night difference in charged
current rates is (8.2 +- 5.2)% and is strongly correlated with the day-night
effect for neutrino-electron scattering. A measurement by SNO of either a NC to
CC ratio > 3.3 or a day-night difference > 10%, would favor a small region of
the currently allowed LMA neutrino parameter space. The global oscillation
solutions predict a 7Be neutrino-electron scattering rate in BOREXINO and
KamLAND in the range 0.66 +- 0.04 of the BP00 standard solar model rate, a
prediction which can be used to test both the solar model and the neutrino
oscillation theory. Only the LOW solution predicts a large day-night effect(<
42%) in BOREXINO and KamLAND. For the KamLAND reactor experiment, the LMA
solution predicts 0.44 of the standard model rate; we evaluate 1 sigma and 3
sigma uncertainties and the first and second moments of the energy spectrum.Comment: Included predictions for KamLAND reactor experiment and updated to
