    Persistence of Carex bigelowii–Racomitrium lanuginosum moss heath under sheep grazing in the Grampian Mountains, Scotland

    Carex bigelowii–Racomitrium lanuginosum moss heath has been monitored on the summit of Glas Maol, Grampian Mountains, Scotland since 1990 to assess the impact of herbivores and snow-lie. This vegetation community has high conservation value in Britain, being near-natural and the habitat of some rare arctic-alpine birds. In recent decades, it has decreased in extent in British uplands, and changed in composition due to declining Racomitrium cover, with the main drivers believed to be heavy grazing and nitrogen deposition. Permanent plots were established for the monitoring, laid out at fixed distances from a ski corridor built in 1986. Sheep grazing was assessed by pellet-group counts, and botanical composition by point-quadrat analysis. Monitoring was in summer annually between 1990 and 1996, but less frequently since. The moss heath was found to retain its main characteristics from 1990 to 2008/09, with Carex bigelowii Torr. ex Schwein dominant and Racomitrium lanuginosum (Hedw.) Brid. having much cover. There was a small but significant increase in grasses, and lichens declined, but the community remained species-poor. Some ground experienced increased grazing pressure and suffered a temporary decline of Racomitrium, but recovery followed despite continuing substantial grazing. The species experiencing greatest change was Dicranum fuscescens Turner, which first increased but later lost most of its cover; its relationships to Racomitrium lanuginosum are discussed

    A conflict management tool for conservation agencies

    1. Growing pressure on natural resources is leading to more conservation conflicts. Governments and their statutory agencies devote increasing financial and human resources to this subject, but tend to adopt reactive, ad hoc approaches to management. 2. We combined theory and empirical data about five conservation conflicts in a transdisciplinary collaboration to co-develop a novel decision-making tool. 3. This tool uses a systematic stepwise approach with six distinct decision stages: (i) establishing whether there is a conflict or an impact; (ii) understanding the context of the conflict, including the stakeholders affected; (iii) developing shared understanding of the conflict and goals; (iv) building a consensus on how to reach the goals; (v) implementing measures; and (vi) monitoring the outcomes. 4. Policy implications. We argue this new tool has wide applicability and democratic legitimacy and offers an exciting and practical approach to improve the management of conservation conflicts

    Effects of deformation in the three-body structure of 11Li

    11Li is studied within a three-body model 9Li+n+n where the core is allowed to be deformed and/or excite. In particular, we include reorientation couplings and couplings between the two bound states of 9Li. Contrary to the other examples studied within this model, we find that core excitation does not affect the structure of 11Li significantly. Reorientation couplings of the deformed 9Li can change the ground state of 11Li from a predominantly two neutron s1/2^2 configuration into a p1/2^2. In addition, we see no evidence for the existence of significant d-wave strength in its ground state, as opposed to the prediction by shell model.     Large Scale Cross-Correlations in Internet Traffic

    The Internet is a complex network of interconnected routers and the existence of collective behavior such as congestion suggests that the correlations between different connections play a crucial role. It is thus critical to measure and quantify these correlations. We use methods of random matrix theory (RMT) to analyze the cross-correlation matrix C of information flow changes of 650 connections between 26 routers of the French scientific network `Renater'. We find that C has the universal properties of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices: The distribution of eigenvalues--up to a rescaling which exhibits a typical correlation time of the order 10 minutes--and the spacing distribution follow the predictions of RMT. There are some deviations for large eigenvalues which contain network-specific information and which identify genuine correlations between connections. The study of the most correlated connections reveals the existence of `active centers' which are exchanging information with a large number of routers thereby inducing correlations between the corresponding connections.     Thermal and chemical unfolding and refolding of a eukaryotic sodium channel

    Voltage-gated sodium channels are dynamic membrane proteins essential for signaling in nervous and muscular systems. They undergo substantial conformational changes associated with the closed, open and inactivated states. However, little information is available regarding their conformational stability. In this study circular dichroism spectroscopy was used to investigate the changes in secondary structure accompanying chemical and thermal denaturation of detergent-solubilised sodium channels isolated from Electrophorus electricus electroplax. The proteins appear to be remarkably resistant to either type of treatment, with "denatured" channels, retaining significant helical secondary structure even at 77 degrees C or in 10% SDS. Further retention of helical secondary structure at high temperature was observed in the presence of the channel-blocking tetrodotoxin. It was possible to refold the thermally-denatured (but not chemically-denatured) channels in vitro. The correctly refolded channels were capable of undergoing the toxin-induced conformational change indicative of ligand binding. In addition, flux measurements in liposomes showed that the thermally-denatured (but not chemically-denatured) proteins were able to re-adopt native, active conformations. These studies suggest that whilst sodium channels must be sufficiently flexible to undergo major conformational changes during their functional cycle, the proteins are highly resistant to unfolding, a feature that is important for maintaining structural integrity during dynamic processes.     Natural and cultural heritage in mountain landscapes: towards an integrated valuation

    Mountain areas of Europe have been managed by humans for a long time, leading to a prevalence of semi-natural habitats in mountain landscapes today. These landscapes contain both natural and cultural heritage; however, natural and cultural heritage are rarely considered together when valuing landscapes and developing management plans in protected areas. Here we present a case study of seven protected areas in the mountains of Great Britain and Norway. We take a long-term perspective on landscape and land-use change and propose an integrated model of landscape valuation on the basis of combined natural and cultural heritage. Our model plots indicators of natural and cultural heritage along a gradient of land-use intensity, allowing simultaneous assessment and highlighting how valuation depends on what type of heritage is considered. We show that while contemporary land-use changes follow similar trajectories in Norway and Britain, different land-use histories mean that the loss of heritage differs between the regions. The model presented here thus allows for the consolidation of valuation based on both cultural and natural heritage in landscapes.publishedVersio

    Single-Proton Removal Reaction Study of 16B

    The low-lying level structure of the unbound system 16^{16}B has been investigated via single-proton removal from a 35 MeV/nucleon 17^{17}C beam. The coincident detection of the beam velocity 15^{15}B fragment and neutron allowed the relative energy of the in-flight decay of 16^{16}B to be reconstructed. The resulting spectrum exhibited a narrow peak some 85 keV above threshold. It is argued that this feature corresponds to a very narrow (Γâ‰Ș\Gamma \ll 100 keV) resonance, or an unresolved multiplet, with a dominant π(p3/2)−1⊗Μ(d5/23)J=3/2+\pi (p_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (d_{5/2}^3)_{J=3/2^+} + π(p3/2)−1⊗Μ(d5/22,s1/2)J=3/2+\pi (p_{3/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (d_{5/2}^2,s_{1/2})_{J=3/2^+} configuration which decays by d-wave neutron emission.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, submitted to Phys.     Functional maturation of isolated neural progenitor cells from the adult rat hippocampus

    Although neural progenitor cells (NPCs) may provide a source of new neurons to alleviate neural trauma, little is known about their electrical properties as they differentiate. We have previously shown that single NPCs from the adult rat hippocampus can be cloned in the presence of heparan sulphate chains purified from the hippocampus, and that these cells can be pushed into a proliferative phenotype with the mitogen FGF2 [Chipperfield, H., Bedi, K.S., Cool, S.M. & Nurcombe, V. (2002) Int. J. Dev. Biol., 46, 661-670]. In this study, the active and passive electrical properties of both undifferentiated and differentiated adult hippocampal NPCs, from 0 to 12 days in vitro as single-cell preparations, were investigated. Sparsely plated, undifferentiated NPCs had a resting membrane potential of approximate to -90 mV and were electrically inexcitable. In > 70%, ATP and benzoylbenzoyl-ATP evoked an inward current and membrane depolarization, whereas acetylcholine, noradrenaline, glutamate and GABA had no detectable effect. In Fura-2-loaded undifferentiated NPCs, ATP and benzoylbenzoyl-ATP evoked a transient increase in the intracellular free Ca2+ concentration, which was dependent on extracellular Ca2+ and was inhibited reversibly by pyridoxalphosphate-6-azophenyl-2'-4'-disulphonic acid (PPADS), a P2 receptor antagonist. After differentiation, NPC-derived neurons became electrically excitable, expressing voltage-dependent TTX-sensitive Na+ channels, low- and high-voltage-activated Ca2+ channels and delayed-rectifier K+ channels. Differentiated cells also possessed functional glutamate, GABA, glycine and purinergic (P2X) receptors. Appearance of voltage-dependent and ligand-gated ion channels appears to be an important early step in the differentiation of NPCs

    Manageable creativity

    This article notes a perception in mainstream management theory and practice that creativity has shifted from being disruptive or destructive to 'manageable'. This concept of manageable creativity in business is reflected in a similar rhetoric in cultural policy, especially towards the creative industries. The article argues that the idea of 'manageable creativity' can be traced back to a 'heroic' and a 'structural' model of creativity. It is argued that the 'heroic' model of creativity is being subsumed within a 'structural' model which emphasises the systems and infrastructure around individual creativity rather than focusing on raw talent and pure content. Yet this structured approach carries problems of its own, in particular a tendency to overlook the unpredictability of creative processes, people and products. Ironically, it may be that some confusion in our policies towards creativity is inevitable, reflecting the paradoxes and transitions which characterise the creative process

    A spinor approach to Walker geometry

    A four-dimensional Walker geometry is a four-dimensional manifold M with a neutral metric g and a parallel distribution of totally null two-planes. This distribution has a natural characterization as a projective spinor field subject to a certain constraint. Spinors therefore provide a natural tool for studying Walker geometry, which we exploit to draw together several themes in recent explicit studies of Walker geometry and in other work of Dunajski (2002) and Plebanski (1975) in which Walker geometry is implicit.
